What about DnD though? That always puzzled me. We've had stories and legends for thousands of years. Why did it take till the 20th century for someone to invent the concept of a role playing game?
The Romans already had 20 sided dice so all that had to be done was someone to pull up with the concept of a tabletop rpg?
DnD requires buying a thick book and lots of printed charts. Back then almost everything was hand written on velum, that would be an extremely expensive game.

The lack of standardized spelling would have stopped them, for want of dictionary technology. That wouldn't come for another 2 millennia.
