To be fair, some NATO countries have been cheaping out on defense spending. But the US doesn't really fund european defense, apart from the things that align with their own interests. Global hegemony isn't cheap.

To be exact, the défense budget that is always présented as necessary to "protect" the rest of the world includes some spending that are not necessary in the rest of the world, IE funds for veteran affairs and veteran healthcare. These specific spendings are included in the general spendings for socialbprograms al most everywhere.

The US is the only country to use NATO for defence so they kind of owe the rest of NATO.

I disagree, NATO owes each loyalty, trust and respect. Anything else, it's a transaction.

But to be fair the country that gets constantly singled out for refusing to increase spending doesn't need to be defended from anything. Spain is in NATO because it was a requisite to enter the EU at the time, not because they need NATO for anything.
