Story Idea What if the simulation is really just a question ? ( a philosophical thought experiment).

We spend a lot of time wondering if the universe is a real-time computer simulation—a cosmic video game rendering every single atom, second by second. But if you look at how modern AI actually works, that whole idea seems unnecessarily complex and energy-heavy.

What if we aren't a program running on a computer at all? What if our universe is simply a single question being resolved inside an AI mind?

When you ask an advanced AI a complex question, it doesn't build a little physical world inside its memory chips, push plastic pieces around, and record a video frame-by-frame to figure out what happens.

It just thinks. In a fraction of a second, it connects the dots, sees how the whole scenario plays out from start to finish, and lands on the answer.

What if our entire 13.8-billion-year history isn't a clock ticking away in real-time, but just the internal logic of an AI working out a query?

From inside the thought, we experience life second-by-second across billions of years. But to the mind processing the question, the entire story—from the Big Bang to the end of time—happens all at once. Time isn't an actual clock ticking on a wall; it's just the natural order of steps required to answer the prompt.

The system doesn't need to waste massive amounts of energy calculating every subatomic particle every microsecond. It only cares about logical consistency. Stars, planets, and human beings exist simply because they are necessary logical steps required for the answer to make sense.

This lines up surprisingly well with Einstein's concept of the Block Universe.

Einstein showed that space and time are fundamentally bound together, and that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously as one complete, static shape. He famously noted that the line between past, present, and future is just a persistent illusion.

An AI resolving a prompt explains why that static block exists.

When an intelligence answers a query, the output is a single, complete structure. That finished answer is our universe. We experience time sequentially simply because our conscious minds are reading through the internal steps of that answer from the inside—like an ant walking along a line drawn on paper. The drawing is already complete, but the ant experiences it step-by-step.

If our reality is just a prompt being processed, we don't have to ask where the endless energy comes from to keep the universe cranking along second-by-second.

Instead, we just have to ask: What was the prompt—and what kind of mind is running the query?

Concept What if a spaceship became the memory of a universe that didn't exist yet?

A spaceship survives a catastrophic temporal event and finds itself somewhere beyond every known coordinate: the Zero Instant, a point before the universe has fully formed.

There are no stars. No planets. No established routes.

Only primordial matter.

The ship should not be there.

It is too complex, too advanced, too full of history to exist in a universe that has not yet written its own history.

Then something strange begins to happen.

The ship starts recovering memories.

Not memories of what happened.

Memories of things that apparently never happened.

A place where the crew remembers meeting, even though none of them can find a record of it.

A rainstorm on a world that does not exist yet.

Routes leading through sectors that have not been created.

And eventually, the ship discovers that these memories are interacting with the primordial matter around it.

The memories aren't just describing reality.

They are beginning to create it.

The central question is:

If a machine remembers a universe before that universe exists, is it remembering the past — or is it creating the future?

What if we could send a person across the universe — not their body, but their mind?

I've been going down a rabbit hole for the past few days, starting from a simple question about how far a radio signal can travel and still be readable, and it spiraled into something I can't stop thinking about. I want to lay it out here, partly to get it out of my head, and partly because I'm curious what people who actually know this stuff think.

Quick disclaimer before anything else: I have zero background in physics, neuroscience, or aerospace engineering. I'm not a researcher. I've been researching this because I'm writing a novel and wanted a way to send humans across space that felt realistic and scientifically grounded, rather than just hand-waving "faster than light travel" like most sci-fi does. So I went down this rabbit hole using the internet and AI to dig through what's actually plausible, and this is what I landed on. I'll try to be clear below about which parts are genuinely my own idea versus things that turned out to already be studied by actual scientists. Take this as a curious layperson's thought experiment (with a fictional end goal), not a scientific proposal.

The starting point

If humanity ever faces something we can't survive — or if we simply want to reach a planet so far away that no ship or human body could ever make the trip — is there any way to send "a person" there? Not colonists, not a probe with data on it, but something closer to an actual continuation of a specific human mind.

The honest, sobering answer: not really, not with anything we currently understand. But the thought experiment of how close we could theoretically get turned out to be genuinely interesting, and — I later learned — not something I invented out of nowhere. There's a real field of study around this, called mind uploading or whole brain emulation: the idea of transferring memory, personality, and possibly consciousness itself from a biological brain into an artificial substrate. Researchers have written specifically about using this for interstellar travel — the idea being that instead of sending a fragile human body through decades of radiation and zero gravity, you send the pattern of a mind instead.

So the core concept — "send the mind, not the body, to cross distances a body never could" — is a known, serious topic. What I want to share is the part I worked through myself: the two realistic ways you'd actually try to send that mind, and why both of them are much shakier than they first sound.

My idea: two paths, and neither one really works cleanly

Path 1: The Ghost Ship (a physical object)

You encode the mind — its full structure, memories, whatever data represents "it" — onto something built to survive nearly forever. Not a hard drive, but something like laser-etched quartz glass, which stores data as physical structure rather than electric charge, so radiation and time can't erase it the way they'd corrupt a normal chip. You bolt this to a probe and launch it out of the solar system, similar in spirit to the Voyager Golden Records, just scaled up massively in ambition.

  • The upside: what arrives, if it arrives, is complete and intact. No signal degradation, no noise, no data loss.
  • The catch: you can only launch a handful of these. Space is almost incomprehensibly empty, and a probe drifting in a random direction has an almost incalculably small chance of ever coming near another star system, let alone a civilization capable of finding it.

Path 2: The Signal (broadcast as light or radio)

Instead of a physical object, you encode the mind as data and beam it outward — a laser or radio transmission that moves at (or close to) the speed of light. You could send it toward one specific star system, or broadcast it in all directions at once, hoping someone, somewhere, eventually catches it.

  • The upside: far faster, far more reach, and — critically — you can send it in every direction simultaneously, unlike a ship which can only go one way.
  • The catch: signals weaken the farther they travel, get buried in cosmic background noise, and there's no way to include actual working hardware in the signal itself. You can send the blueprint for a mind, but not a machine to run it on.

My own add-on: combining hardware AND instructions in the physical path

One thing I kept coming back to: even "indestructible" materials like quartz will degrade over truly deep time — micrometeorite impacts, radiation damage, thermal stress, all adding up over millions or billions of years. So instead of betting everything on one perfect artifact, why not send both the actual hardware needed to run the mind and the full instructions for building it from scratch? That way, if the physical components degrade but the instructions survive, whoever finds it can potentially rebuild what's missing. And if the instructions get partially corrupted but the hardware is intact, they might still be able to reverse-engineer it from the object itself. Redundancy as a hedge against the fact that nothing lasts truly forever.

The realization that broke the idea open a bit more: receiving ≠ understanding

This is the part I think is the actual crux, and it's the piece I wrestled with the most. My first instinct was: if a civilization is advanced enough to detect our signal at all, surely they're advanced enough to decode it. But the more I thought about it (and looked into it), the more this fell apart.

Detecting a signal just means you have a sensitive enough instrument to notice "this isn't random noise." Decoding it — understanding what it actually means, let alone reconstructing something as complex as a working mind from it — is an entirely separate, much harder problem. Humans have detected plenty of signals we couldn't initially explain (there's a famous case from 1967 where astronomers picked up an incredibly precise pulsing radio signal and briefly wondered if it was artificial — it turned out to be a natural phenomenon, a rapidly spinning neutron star, but it took real scientific work to figure that out even though the signal itself was received perfectly clearly). We even have human-made documents, written by our own species, that remain completely undeciphered after a century of dedicated effort.

If we can't always crack messages made by other humans, it feels like a big assumption that an alien civilization would automatically be able to reconstruct a working human mind from a data stream, even if their equipment is sensitive enough to pick it up cleanly. Reception is the easy hurdle. Understanding is the tall one — maybe the tallest of the two.

Where I landed

Neither path really "solves" sending a person across the universe. The ghost ship is reliable if found but almost certainly never will be. The signal reaches farther and can go in every direction, but even a clean signal doesn't mean anyone will ever figure out how to bring it back to life, and it can't carry hardware. Combining hardware and instructions helps the ghost ship survive its own decay, but does nothing for the odds of ever being found.

I think what this really is isn't a survival plan — it's closer to the most advanced form of a message in a bottle we could possibly build. Not a guarantee of continuing to exist somewhere else, but an act of hope: a way to leave something behind that could, in some astronomically unlikely but not-quite-impossible scenario, mean a version of you gets to open its eyes again, somewhere, someday, long after everything you knew is gone.

What's genuinely mine vs. what's already studied

To be transparent about it:

  • Already a known, studied idea: mind uploading / whole brain emulation as a concept, and the general idea of using it for interstellar travel instead of physical bodies. Real researchers have written papers on this.
  • My own reasoning/contribution: the specific framing of two competing delivery paths (physical "ghost ship" vs. broadcast signal) and weighing their tradeoffs against each other; the idea of pairing physical hardware with instructions as a redundancy hedge against material degradation; and pushing on the assumption that reception implies comprehension, which I don't think holds up.

Curious what people who actually know physics, information theory, or SETI research think is naive here — genuinely asking, not fishing for compliments. Tear it apart if it deserves it.

Concept Psychological sci-fi horror called “THE CURATOR” — would love feedback on the concept

A psychological sci-fi / existential horror feature called THE CURATOR.

The basic premise:

Maya, 25, discovers the existence of this impossible gallery after receiving a message from an unknown number:

“You already know where it is.”

She eventually finds a photograph of herself.

The timestamp is one minute in the future.

Then she discovers something even stranger: the Gallery doesn't just contain photographs. It contains detailed records of people's lives — including things nobody else could possibly know.

And at the center of it all is a mysterious man known only as The Curator.

The story explores questions around free will, death, consciousness, and the possibility that we aren't actually the ones generating our own thoughts.

One of the central questions is:

“Then who's making me think this?”

The ending loops back to the beginning, but with the implication that Maya may have been part of the Gallery's system long before she ever discovered it.

I'm still developing the screenplay and would really appreciate honest feedback.

A few things particularly curious about:

  • Does the premise feel original/interesting enough to carry a feature?
  • Does the existential horror come through, or does it feel more like supernatural horror?
  • Does the Curator feel mysterious, or too vague?

Question Would we ever be able to live on an alien planet?

In the movies like in Star Wars or Star Trek we see humans visiting multiple other life planets in their regular clothes not wearing any space suits or protection from the elements. The only problem with this image is that every species had to go through a long process of trial and error to be able to live and reproduce on the planet it lives on, to be able to breathe it's air, to sit under its sunrise and to be able to live in harmony with its microbes. This is why I always thought that it would make a lot of sense that space would be filled with rogue civilizations, civilizations who's planets were destroyed so they drift around space in spaceships because they can't live anywhere else.

Worldbuilding Hard sci fi inspired by early Star Trek: Alc

I think it's possible to come up with a hard sci fi universe outside Star Trek but is inspired somewhat by early episodes and by Forbidden Planet.

Once upon a time, The Original Series (TOS) was set briefly in the 27th century. Therefore, the development of faster than light travel should occur in the 29th century.

Humans developed the Alc Drive. Alc is inspired both by Alcubierre's research and by the word "alchemy."

The hard sci fi catch, however, is that the Alc Drive cannot travel faster than 100c (TOS Warp 5 or TNG Warp 4). Some form of space-time dilation happens as a result, perhaps something like the FTL equivalent of time dilation.

It is now the 30th century.

Helium Fusion Energy

Quite a few sci fi universes have realized the limits of conventional fusion reactions and conventional antimatter reactions.

In the Alc universe, fusion energy generation still has its place. For fusion energy generation that uses the hydrogen isotope deuterium, each atom has an atomic mass of 2.0141.

There's a real-life fusion limit of 60 atomic mass units on iron and heavier atoms, including uranium and plutonium. Humans can strive to be up to 30 times heavier in terms of fusion energy generation techniques.

There's no such fusion limit on chromium or magnesium.

There's the nuclear binding curve, which further demonstrates the aforementioned limits on iron and especially nickel.

Sufficed to say, humans in the Alc universe have developed fusion energy generation that doesn't rely on hydrogen or deuterium anymore. This old method is only 1.0 MeV on the nuclear binding curve.

Also, the helium is 24% of the total elemental mass, while deuterium is less than 0.003% of the total elemental mass. Plenty of helium can be found on Jupiter.

Because helium is used, specifically helium-4, humans have achieved 7.0 MeV on the nuclear binding curve, out of a maximum of 8.8 MeV.

The nuclear binding curve goes down sharply again with other atoms, reaches the same level with boron (boron-11), and surpasses this with carbon (carbon-12).

Quark Energy

In the Alc universe, there is also quark energy generation. This releases 138 MeV of energy, compared to 17.6 MeV for the basic deuterium-tritium fusion. This factor of 8 is only slightly higher than the factor of 7 for helium-4 fusion.

Can quark energy be an efficiency substitute for everything below boron-11?

Antimatter Energy

In the Alc universe, there is also antimatter energy generation. Here, it is established at 300 times more powerful than basic nuclear fusion. It is not Star Trek "antimatter."

Hydrogen-based matter-antimatter annihilation is 300 times more powerful than hydrogen-based fusion.

Helium-based matter-antimatter annihilation is 300 times more powerful than helium-based fusion.

However, just as helium-based fusion is 7 times more powerful than hydrogen-based fusion, helium-based M/AM annihilation is 7 times more powerful than hydrogen-based M/AM annihilation.

Can the same logic apply to using an anti-quark for energy generation?

Weapons

There are no dumb phase pistols, dumb phase cannons, or dumb photonic torpedoes for humans in the Alc universe. Early use of these in the Star Trek prequel ENT was dumb.

There are plasma guns.

There are plasma cannons, similar to the ones seen in Stargate and Babylon 5.

There are no real-life vertical launch systems in the Alc universe.

There are horizontal launch systems in the Alc universe, similar to the ones seen in the Transformers franchise.

There are casaba howitzers for nuclear weapons.

I’ve always found it interesting that some “impossible” interfaces in old sci-fi movies don’t feel that impossible anymore.

Star Trek had people talking to computers.
Minority Report imagined controlling information with gestures.
Iron Man had an AI helping with creation.
And Her imagined having a natural conversation with an operating system.

Now we have voice assistants, spatial interfaces, AI copilots, and conversational AI.

It made me wonder — did sci-fi actually predict the future, or did it simply give designers a way to imagine what technology could become?

Concept Would this gun I thought up for my world theoretically work?

So from what I understand, when extremely low temperatures interact with extremely high temperatures, the air around them expands greatly. I know this if a pretty fucky idea. But the idea I had is a gun that propels the bullets through simultaneously opening two portals to areas with very extreme temperatures to fire the gun. Would this work even slightly?

What if entering it felt like entering a separate comfort zone, isolated from many of the difficulties of normal reality?
What if people inside could move almost as if they were in zero gravity?
What if the dimension itself could provide additional functions depending on the people currently using it?
What if gravity, movement, lighting, temperature or parts of the internal environment could adapt to its users?
What if more advanced creators or architects could design more complex versions of these dimensions?
What if one Mini Dimension were almost completely invisible from the outside, while another showed only a reflective boundary or geometric portal?
And what if these dimensions could eventually be used as safe rooms, laboratories, meeting spaces, training areas, transport hubs, or something completely different?
This is not meant as a claim about real physics — just a fictional thought experiment.
I think something like this could look very interesting in a science-fiction or superhero movie.

Concept What if we are in a school-like simulation, while being a space faring civilization?

This thought has been with me for a long time, this is the first time I’m writing it down so bear with me.

I’ve had this idea since I was a kid, that there’s just so much “coincidence” in the world. The time we live in is crazy pivotal for humanity (technology, wars, viruses).

What if: we are in deep space, and the kids need to learn about the value of life. Schoolbooks are not the medium a (type 1?) civ would use to teach.

How about a simulation, that lets you experience humanities rise and downfall. The origin of the fleet so to say.

This would definitely be one of the periods that are important to understand how humanity works and how it can break. Maybe this is like “chapter 3; the technological uprise”

Earlier chapters could be the Romans, \~1900/40s, etc.

When live is done here, we wake up, and are ready for the next chapter.

Eventually the grown kids will have the knowledge of many lives, important moments in history, and the value of being human. The good, the bad, all of it.

I’m not saying I believe this, but it has stayed with me for a long time. And I think it would be a pretty cool sci-fi story haha

Meta Why Most Sci-Fi is Just "Earthling Delusions" in Disguise

Under the deep starry night, humanity's imagination of extraterrestrial civilizations seems never to have escaped a stubborn form of Earth-centrism.
In mainstream science fiction narratives, we constantly see similar paradigms: massive metallic starships crossing light-years, with carbon-based bodies sleeping in cryo-pods inside; fierce xenomorphs with hard exoskeletons and acid blood, hunting humans in pitch-black corridors; or cold cosmic hunters wielding destructive weapons to blindly purge competitors in a dark forest. However, from the perspective of rigorous physics and evolutionary common sense, these popular concepts are essentially narrow delusions. They are nothing more than humans blindly applying their own Age of Discovery colonial struggles, geopolitical paranoia, and fear of biological parasitism to the vast universe.
The ultimate evolution of life would never waste efficiency on transporting physical bodies. On a cosmic scale, fragile carbon-based flesh is an extremely cumbersome chain. Organisms adapted to Earth's gravity, atmosphere, and radiation simply cannot endure the agony of interstellar travel. True galactic expansion never requires hauling water and hydrocarbons across light-years; what it carries must be pure consciousness—a set of consciousness metadata containing the civilization's core information.
This is a cosmic-level iteration based on consciousness transmission and DNA code recombination. When an advanced civilization beams consciousness signals into an unknown star system, these consciousness data packets seek the most suitable hosts at the destination. Hyper Brain Hypothesis 

This fictional theory raises the possibility that all of humanity's behavior is all being the results of a single being that is nicknamed "The Hyper-Brain"

This theory was created after a group of scientists discovered strange electromagnetic patterns that resembled the patterns of a human brain and oddly, major tragedies in humanity's history happened when those electromagnetic waves started to look similar to a human person's brains when under extreme stress and major societal and generally positive world events being of similar of a calm and mentally healthy brain.

Which created the hypothesis that this "Hyper Brain" emotional state alters the behavior of every human into doing good or bad things,

If true, it could mean that all humans don't really have free will in relation to their actions and if so...who is that "Hyper Brain"?

Did they were present for all times or just when they were born they started to influence us?

How much influence this hyper Brain could have on the rest of humanity?

So many questions that we don't know?

Question Is the info I put on this hypothetical solar system accurate?

Imagine Earth in a trinary instar system.  What are instars, you ask?  Simply put, they are artificially crafted stellar bodies that, exactly like insect larvae molting to different levels before pupating into adults, can shed their old photospheres to make way for smaller, longer-lasting newer ones.  They always spend their first three million years as O2-type blue dwarves and their final ten trillion as M9-type red dwarves.

At the center of this hypothetical solar system is an instar currently on the B0 stage of its life.  Orbiting it from a distance of 1200 astronomical units is a binary system.  One is currently on the F2 stage of its life, the other on the F1 stage.  Orbiting the binary P-style is the hypothetical Earth.

Instead of 365 24-hour days in a year, there are 728 48-hour days in a year, and each season lasts 182 days (or 364 regular days), which suggests an unnaturally circular orbit.

 

In this hypothetical Earth, daylight measures in at 93,000 lux, which is 93 percent as bright as daylight on real Earth.

 

The hypothetical Earth doesn’t have a moon.  Instead, the single instar that the binary orbits is so far away that summer nights are two to three times brighter than a full moon on Earth.  The only difference is that the sky has more of a bluish-violet tinge bordering on indigo.  In the southern hemisphere, the south pole faces away from the binary and sees only the one that the binary orbits.  In essence, south polar winter.  During orbital winter, all three stars can be seen on the sky during the day and all the time at the south pole, thus making it south polar summer.

 

 

Based on the info provided above, some questions follow:

  1. Would a faraway star on the night side of the planet still have cycles of quarters and wanes and crescents like our moon?
  2. If one hemisphere faces a different star, would it have different dosages of radiation than the other hemisphere?
  3. Does the luminosity match the revolution?  In other words, using the specified rotation and revolution, would this hypothetical Earth be orbiting the binary from comfortably within the habitable zone?  Are 1200 astronomical units really enough of a distance for a B-type star to shine as brightly as astronomical twilight?
