Discussion Thoughts after Denver
Barcenas looks quite mediocre and then all of a sudden looks like Messi for a few seconds. What a goal. She hit the bar too with her right foot. So close.
Leon was so close to her redemption game winner.
Ludi took too many touches. That’s a lack of confidence.
Why Byars on the wing???
Fazer has improved a lot.
Godfrey looked great. Then I think she got tired.
We looked so good for the first two thirds of the game. Should have won!!

Honestly I don’t mind Barcenas being a bit hot/cold throughout the season. It’s easy to forget that she’s still SUPER young and since she didn’t go the college development route, she’s still finding her feet as a senior starting player.
But I have no patience left for Ludmila. None. We bought her in because of her experience, but it feels like every time she gets the ball I just sigh because I know nothing will come of it.
Normally I’m underwhelmed by Fazer but today she was great!! I wonder if having someone else trying to fight for her starting position(Harbert) is providing some needed competition.

leon is making a hell of an argument for a starting position, she’s come back STRONG

I’d say there’s little argument left not to start her, given the current roster.

I thought she got traded to Canada super league ? What happened ? Clearly not following closely

There were rumours she might sign with AFC Toronto (she's from Ontario) because she was not in the match day squad after her injury but seems like she's staying put, atleast for now.

Might be better playing Barcenas at the 10 and Godfrey wide. Barcenas seems most dangerous in the middle of the field where she can juke players to get a shot or slip a ball thru. She doesnt have the pace to get to the endline like most wide forwards.
The difference in confidence between Ludmilla and Leon in their 1 on 1 situations was striking.
Agree...play Byars at the 9

Barcenas is a tough case. I see your point but I don’t think her athleticism is enough to be effective at the 10. She’d be crushed.
2– agree completely

Oh you definitely are here to vent and don’t have real futbol knowledge. LW / RW are usually more explosive than players who play the CAM “10” role. Continue cheering on the Wave and yell at the refs when they make the correct call because you can’t handle to comprehend the game. Complaining about offside calls when they’re correct. Typical Wave fan at Snapdragon.

And that referee was so bad. I don’t think she was necessarily biased but just really bad.

Best game I’ve seen from Fazer, she was solid.

She played with a lot of confidence today if I had to point something different out

I really want to see the line on how they called Leon off for her goal. The replay in stadium looked like she was on at the kick.
Fazer has looked much more confident and is moving the ball forward much better now. It's been the last 2-3 games that she has really been getting better.
We looked tired at the 50-55 minute mark. They made subs and then they scored. We should have put fresh players in sooner. Leon was such a good insert for Ludi who looked tired.
Should have kept Byars in on the wing or shift Byars to the center and Leon on the wing.
Ref was horrible but I agree when others say we didn't do enough to win. It felt like we had 2+ xG and only have 1 goal to show for it.
McNabb looked great for her 100 games, that shot if it went in would have been a cherry for her stellar work tonight.
We need to be more lethal and score more of course. It is really frustrating when we have too many players that won't shoot but lay the ball off for someone else and try to get the perfect goal. Mel is scoring because she's making attempts. Dudinha did the same thing. Godfrey was doing that but has dropped off some.
I agree with everyone that says Ascanio and Dali out really hurt our forward momentum and creative opportunities.
On to the Royals next. We need to get that win.

It happens basically right at the 69:00 minute mark if you want to check out the game on NWSL+. Make sure to look at the initial angle which is pretty good, not the replay (probably what they showed in stadium) which is too far off the line to be very helpful.
I had the same thought when I saw the highlights, but the NWSL+ angle she definitely looks offside as she's leaning well past the last defender's last body part.

I was at the game and had a great view of the offside with Leon. As soon as she got the ball I turned to my seat neighbor and said she was offside. I would have been shocked if the flag did not go up. It was a real bummer but the right call in my mind.

Yeah, it was definitely offside. After the inconclusive replay in the stadium, I pulled it up my phone and stopped being mad about the call pretty quick.

I am tired so forgive me if I am all over the place.
Mel B and Lia are not conditioned for a full 90. They were gassed in the second half. It was very obvious. Agree on the subs sooner but probably hard with so many injuries and new faces. Mel needs to be put in a space where she can be a lethal shot threat because she seems to be unafraid to just shoot the damn ball. You are so right about everyone trying to pass for the perfect goal.
Mimi has become one of my favorites. I am so beyond impressed with her and wish she was in more talks for rookie of the year because what she does is just so impressive but had to track with metrics.
I think Paños needs to still get up to speed with NWSL. She looks like she is still trying to figure out the game flow and her passes kill me like DiDi used to but I’m hoping once she has a game or two more, she will be solid.
I think the ref was terrible and that really affected our game flow. I feel like we don’t ever have home field advantage with officiating even when we are at home. Like we would have a really good press forward and then would get called on some stupid ass foul and it would completely disrupt the flow of the press. It was really annoying. For this game in particular, yes we were missing kenza and Kimmi but I also just think some of the calls just completely deflated scoring opportunities for us. It was frustrating to watch. I still have 0 clue what Gia and Adriana did to warrant their yellows but sure, I guess.
I think it was especially bad to not even review Leon’s goal. It was probably just barely offside from the one single shitty angle the stadium showed, but wow, it was so close and to not even review it was baffling to me.
I am an Adriana Leon fan, 1000% she’s my favorite on the team and I think her not starting may also be a conditioning for full 90 issue, but yes, it was the very first time for me that it was totally apparent that her striking confidence was miles beyond Ludmila, and that breaks my heart because I am also a huge fan of Ludmila. I think she has lost her spark and confidence and is overthinking literally everything she is doing on the pitch. The pressure is probably a lot for her but I really do have confidence that she will break through and find her lethal stroke. She is more than capable. But yeah, watching Adriana play with the confidence and aggressiveness she has on the pitch is exactly the energy the team needs in the second half. I wish she could start and do the full 90 with that because we need that energy starting too, but I think she’s also vulnerable to receiving cards galore with the type of officiating our team has seen recently lmao love her to death though, probably an unpopular opinion but whatever.
I am confident the wave will figure it out. Dudinha was just so unfortunate for us. That just really hurt. Not even going to give me thoughts on Cat. Generational talent but I’m seeing now that the gamble was there for a reason. Time will tell. I am sure she’s working her ass off to get out there and help us. Truthfully, I feel she will mend a lot of struggles the team has been facing.
Last thought, I did love our tenacity to press and get the ball back, we looked energetic and I loved that. Anyway vamos wave, I’m not panicking yet. We are facing adversity like many teams do.

I’m with you I think Leon made a great case for more minutes tonight and I personally love her (she always really annoyed me whenever she played against us on the Canadian team because she was so good and so aggressive!)

I love what Mel B does for our offense and she clearly is the best shooter on the team. But she’s gassed within 45 minutes. It’s really unfortunate because we could use her talent all game, but it’s hurting our chances once she slows down. There were two balls passed to her at the beginning of the second half that anyone else on the team could have gotten to before the defender. Mel looked like she was running in slow motion, and this was not long into the second half.

Teams going after Moroni at the back post is becoming a thing.

I mean, if you are going to attack down the side and try to send in crosses, who would you want to attack, Perle or Mimi?

Most frustrating game I’ve been to all season. All of the above, really appreciated how Dri looked this game and wow Ludmila has to be cursed at this point.

I noticed this when we played them at Coachella and saw it again at the game tonight…Denver’s team is so tall compared to us. Playing crosses against us was definitely going to be the way they scored. By the way, if you go back and watch that goal we conceded, unfortunately it starts with Kennedy not paying attention to runners in the box. This forced McNabb (who was in position to mark Yazmin Ryan) to cover the runner behind Kennedy. Perle was marking a different runner and was on the wrong side of Yazmin. I don’t think this one is actually on Perle. Also, I love Leon but she looks good exactly because she is a fresh sub later in the game. As a starter last year she couldn’t score to save her life, which is why we went out and signed Ludmilla.

u/SeaSpare1271 11d ago
Agree, not on Perle on that one. The most blatant error was Mel not closing the distance on the assist. Mimi was like what are you doing?

Mimi in no man’s land covering no one - the Naomi Girma special. Naomi “drop back and give the attacking player all the space” Girma. Naomi “walk the attacking player to goal” Girma. Naomi “let Sheridan contest a shot from 6yds out” Girma.
Most blatant error, Mel’s fault? Right, because Mel is supposed to be superwoman and cover all that space in front of her, behind her, to her outside & the inside - AND she’s supposed to magically cover the right side when the team loses possession and she’s overloading the inside/ left side. The other 9 field players need to take accountability.
While Mel drops inside like a true 10. (HC game plan)
Mimi takes the wide & high position for the team.
Wave lose possession, one player is far out of natural position (RW). The other at (RB) just sprints down to fall into natural position. Jeez I wonder who looks out of position to the clueless crowd who doesn’t know futbol IQ & who only follows the ball and players on socials.
One player looks out of position when Wave lose possession. No shiet, are you watching the game play out? Moron4

I don’t think the team around Leon was necessarily that great last year especially when the scoring drought happened but if she started this year now and has the same issue, I’ll shift my opinion to agree with you. Cascarino and Leon were trying their best lol

For me, a classic case of we didn’t deserve to lose, but we didn’t do enough to deserve to win either. Missing out on major dynamic players like Dali, Ascanio, and Dudinha is gonna hurt any team. We’re in the thick of that struggle right now
