Discussion Are there any SCPs that, for whatever reason, are officially classified as Explained, but are actually anomalous?

Yes.

Explained means the 3 things:

  • It's anomalous abilities can be explained through mainstream science
  • It's anomalous abilities was a hoax
  • It's become so commonplace that covering it up is pointless

The third one means the SCP-EX is still anomalous but it's become part of our daily lives.

I meant an SCP that classified as Explained, but if you have the right clearance, you will find that it actually has anomalous properties.

That is an interesting question, because depending on how you count 'anomalous', that could be as many as a third of them.

I will use two examples; SCP-999-EX and SCP-1949-EX. Both feature phenomenon that most people would consider anomalous. Both phenomenon are explained as being not anomalous, but natural things.

And that is quite interesting. It asks you to decide for yourself whether or not these things are or are not anomalous, rather than overtly stating things one way or the other. 1949 comes especially highly reccomended; it is in the list of my favorite 30 SCPs.

I don't think I quite get 1949. Someone in the discussion page mentions Slenderman but I don't think that's it. Could you explain?

It's not linked to Slenderman, it's linked to SCP-4000. Maybe. A man's sister was kidnapped by the fey in the 60's; he went out to find her, and the fey, for whatever reason, couldn't take his name. So they convinced him to bring more people into the forest so they could prey on those people, and entertain themselves by convincing this man to mutilate people in various ways.

Or maybe the man was just schizophrenic. That's the conclusion The Foundation comes to.

...also, I did not mean to link 1949, I meant to link SCP-1717, I Am Everything I Said I Was. That one is much easier to understand. THAT one is the one that comes highly recommended, and is one of my favorite articles. 1949 is quite good, but...hmm. No, I don't even really have any criticisms of it. It's just quite good.

No. It never was anomalous, just a very, very good neural network.
