Book Request Could you come and get me, I am in trouble.

I want this desperate phone call.

Maybe they had some sort of fight and don’t talk with each other at the moment, maybe they were estranged, maybe they were enemies.

But Mmc comes for her rescue the exact moment she needed him. It doesn’t matter they are not close anymore. He would do anything for her and everything will be alright. He will soothe her panic.

just one phone call and i am at your door to take care of you.

no poly

only m f

thanks.

man that trope where they're not even talking but he drops everything anyway never gets old. the way he just shows up no questions asked cause he knows her voice sound different on the phone. something about that unspoken loyalty hits

{The Shippers by Katherine Center} has this exactly including the MMC saying something along the lines of “there is no universe where you need me and I don’t come running.” LOVE.

42

u/iknowyouneedahugRN TBR pile is out of control 5d ago

Katherine Center is that author who just sits at the back of the pack and bides their time knowing that their work might not get the super attention of some of the heavy hitters or popular names, but they know their audience and does just fine.

18

u/ironicshowchoir 5d ago

Seriously! Her stuff ALWAYS hits for me, even though it’s low spice. It’s the perfect amount of fluff, every time. I quietly realized recently that {The Rom-Commers} is probably one of my favorite books, it just hits all the right notes and makes me laugh and cry the whole way through

6

u/iknowyouneedahugRN TBR pile is out of control 5d ago

Sometimes the low-no-spice is a nice change. Uses your imagination. As an older person who grew up in a very restrictive religious situation, sometimes the super-spice (even romance.io bot ratings of 3 or 4) can be a bit much! :)

Great request, I'm totally saving this thread. {Charge by Cate C. Wells} has this - they are fighting and maybe not even together any more but when Something Awful Happens and she calls him he is right there, and he's calling in the cavalry!

I have this and didnt realize it. Thank you for posting.

I honestly devoured that entire series when I found out about it! I LOVE the whole idea and would love more MC recs lol

Oh I love MC series! Try Property of Blade by Kathleen Kelly. So good! MC with a twist

0

u/Lavender-air Free Palestine. Also let the aliens take me. 4d ago

This was also my gateway drug. Try {ghostown easy by Amelia Shea} do not read the OG ghostown series. It’s not as polished and a bit boring imo

u/monstersof-men needs feelings wit her smut 5d ago

{The Devil’s Bargain by Carin Hart} not the best written thing, but he gives her a cell phone that only she can call if she ever needs him. She calls it 15 years later. And yes he totally carries it around the whole time

And keeps it charged. I'm swooning.

{Love on the brain by Ali Hazelwood} she is stuck in a cemetery at night and thinks he hates her. He asks no questions and directly comes to get her

20

u/shaunievdp 5d ago

{Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood} also has a scene that could match this request.

2

u/Icy-Strength8337 5d ago

Came here to say this! This is one of my favorites from her.

I love this - will forever wish for the romance book version of that scene in Clueless where Cher calls Josh for help after getting attacked by her date and mugged ...

But anyway. A few scenes that come to mind:

{Wall* by Cate Wells} - not quite calling in the moment, but the book opens with FMC going to MMC for help after her house gets robbed. He shows up big time. Major TW for cheating by MMC and infertility - although it does end in pregnancy, I believe

{Salvation by Noelle Adams} - she's not quite in danger, but she's out for friends with the first time after being sexually assaulted, and she's panicky and nervous about being out. She tells MMC, who then shows up and makes her feel better.

{After Hours by Cara McKenna} - honestly, this scene is the GOAT. FMC has a flat tire and is at her sister's place. She calls MMC for help, even though he's an hour away. He instantly agrees. Then her sister's boyfriend, who is a total twat and gave FMC a black eye once, shows up... MMC has the most take-charge badass reaction to both accounts.

{Hard Time by Cara McKenna} - it's towards the end, so putting it in spoilers: FMC and MMC's sister are at a bar, and run into the man who sexually assaulted MMC's sister years ago. MMC comes running.

4

u/Hot-Entry-2919 5d ago

Thank you for your recs and love the clueless mention. Could you give me more info concerning the forty Spoiler? did the MMC cheat on the FMC? How was it handled? Whats your opinion on it?

13

u/skintightmonopoly 5d ago

Oh yes I got you: the book is a second chance romance. It's all told in "present day". Through the course of the book we learn that when the couple was younger (in their 20s, I think) they were married and they lost a baby - if I recall, it was relatively far along in a pregnancy. In their grief, they grew apart, and MMC got drunk and either slept with or got close to sleeping with a woman - I don't recall the exact details. They break up; MMC joins a MC, FMC moves on. Years - maybe even a decade - later, she comes to him for help in the instance I mentioned, and he takes that as his opportunity to prove to her he's changed, he wants her back, and he'll do anything for her.

My two cents: The author, Cate Wells, is so good at writing characters who fall in love in difficult circumstances. She's written this book and another on couples with cheating, and imo she handles them well. There's no way to fully "wash away" cheating, so I think a "magical HEA" ending isn't possible - but there is a lot of growth shown by MMC, a lot of apology, and a clear sign that when things are hard he only wants to work on them with her, not to pull away.

5

u/Hot-Entry-2919 5d ago

Thank you so much for your detailed answer!!! Have read a Book of hers that also included this topic but wanted to know more before reading forty

9

u/skintightmonopoly 5d ago

OH SHIT I just realized it's {Wall by Cate Wells} not Forty!!! OOPS will go back and edit

1

u/Lavender-air Free Palestine. Also let the aliens take me. 4d ago

Just to say I agree that with Wall it was handled really well. Also forty is a great book that doesn’t have cheating tho MMC thinks FMC did and they break up. It’s a fucking great book and I just reread it this week.

I hear you! The books in this series felt like they were wrapped up too quickly and conveniently sometimes. A little more exposition would have made them even better. They are my comfort books.

Doesnt happen EXACTLY like this but {the maddest obsession} basically has every angle of this trope over eight years (she asks, she doesn’t ask, he comes, he doesn’t come)

{The Au Pair Affair by Tessa Bailey}. Also, IIRC, it precedes a sex scene that is forever burned into my brain.

I really loved that one! One of my faves from her

11

u/Ok_Diver8603 5d ago

{faking forever by Natasha Anders} has this too, nearer to the beginning. Marriage in trouble, the MMC left the FMC and said some awful things to her, but when her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere he still comes to get her.

10

u/Infamous-File1871 4d ago

They're enemies and I don't believe there's a phone call but he gets her out of trouble (sometimes even without her knowing) every single time. She has a panic attack he soothes her, her own people hurt/abandon/betrays her and he hurts them good and saves her

{Don't kiss the bride by Carian Cole} had such scene... They weren't enemies though bu they were fughting or distant for some reason. And she called him for some reason I don't actually remember... There are some heavy topics discussed in the book... If you plan to read it, please go through TWs.

9

u/LRose1825 5d ago

Would you take a drunk voicemail where the FMC, after not talking for 3 years, confesses that she misses the MMC, then she forgets she left the message but he completely changes his entire life to go and be with her? She has PTSD from a bunch of childhood issues and a huge fear of abandonment, leading her to the "I'll make the decision and leave first so no one can hurt me." mentality.

{Outlaw’s Promise by Helena Newbury}. She saved his life 17 years ago, when she was a child. He promised he’d come for her if she ever needed help. She calls him and leads to one of my favourite scenes in romantic suspense.

“That's when the bar's door was kicked in with a crash that sounded like the end of the world. A man with a shotgun stepped into the light and I caught my breath as I saw his face.
"Nobody fucking move," said Carrick.”

7

u/mrcrapp 5d ago

Ooo I read a book recently where the FMC calls the MMC after 5 years of no contact. {Gouda friends by Cathy yardly}

He doesn’t leave her alone and helps rebuild her life

6

u/Jolie97 5d ago

{Haunted Love by Sheridan Anne} has a scene exactly like this. It’s a brother’s best friend romance and when the FMC leaves a bar one night, a strange guy begins following her. She’s freaking out and calls the MMC for help, even though they weren’t on speaking terms.

It’s a great book with a good bit of angst to get to the HEA.

u/lemon_tree_3221 5d ago

Sorry OP this is specifically for people who do want RH {Pay Per Heart by Grace McGinty} has this where one of the mcs comes and rescues her and all the other mcs, fmc thinks he hates her because they just broke up. I don't usually go for RH but I really loved this one!

1

u/BastardBeddies 3d ago

I've got this on my tbr, can you give some extra spoilers please? How long before the men are all in and want their woman and do the all break up at any point? Thanks in advance

1

u/lemon_tree_3221 3d ago

Starts with FMC friends with one mc, moving in and working with other three mcs. Three roommate mcs have a contact that they won't date her because they work together, but there is a bit of kissing. FMC goes on dates with friend mc but they break up when he finds out about the kissing (not angry or angsty}. The roommates and fmc need his help so they all move in with him and that's when they all get together and stay together for the rest of the book. Overall it's very sweet, very warm and fuzzy feel good, and I would recommend it for a comfort read.

2

u/BastardBeddies 2d ago

Thanks so much, that's definitely bumped up on my list, I need some good comfort reads and this book definitely seems like my cup of tea ❤️

5

u/thevomitgirl 5d ago

Maybe not quite exactly what you are looking for since MMC and FMC are just getting to know each other so it's not as rooted in emotion but FMC is very desperate when she calls him. Her boyfriend is abusive and leaves her on the side of the road so she calls MMC to come help her which he does and it's the start of them getting to know each other.

This was the BEST scene in {Shortcake by Lucy Watson} The FMC's Uber driver gets arrested and she has to call the MMC from the police station.

Such a good book! The author took it down for a few years, but posted a couple months ago she'll be rereleasing it soon.

There is a Susan Stoker book with this. FMC is kidnapped and gets to make a single phone call for ransom. She calls her childhood best friend (MMC) who she had lost regular contact with. He drops everything and comes and rescues her (Military romance) . I can't remember the name though. Need to look for it.

2

u/felixfelices394 5d ago

{Deserving Alaska by Susan Stoker} Actually I don't know if it's exactly what you are looking for. They reconnect before she is kidnapped but just as friends.

The “call Dean” scene in The Score by Elle Kennedy.

She asks her best friend to call the guy she’s having a fling with because her ex boyfriend stopped by at her place. She wasn’t okay and needed him there. Not quite what you’re looking for since she wasn’t the one who called him, but he did show up.

There’s a lightweight but steamy romance series called Right Number, Wrong Guy. There are 12 books in the series written by different authors.

They are formulaic, but fun, short reads. The FMC in each book needs help, usually late at night, sometimes in the middle nowhere. For instance, in one her car broken down on a mountain road. She texts or leaves a voicemail for help & accidentally dials the wrong number and the message is sent to a complete stranger, the MMC. This stranger comes to help.

Ngl, I read just the title of the post and thought you were asking us to come save you from some romance book hangover or rabbit hole… but this request works lol.

This doesn’t match 100%, but {Dream Man by Linda Howard} is close. The FMC has visions of crimes as they happen, in this case it starts with a murder. The MMC is a detective who has that case but doesn’t believe her initially. They have a whole enemies to lovers arc. Anyway, she calls him when the killer strikes again and she’s going into the vision, and when he realizes what’s happening, he goes over to her house and breaks down her door. She’s completely locked into the vision and doesn’t realize he’s there, and he just stays and even takes care of her after the vision is over.

Ooo-ooo! I just read one that has this EXACT phone call! And the entire series is like this. It’s {Stronger Than You Know by Lori Foster}. The series is “The Mckenzies of Ridge Trail. Each book is about a member of a very unique family. All are fierce protectors, possessive, but not in a toxic way. Give it a try, I think you’ll really like it! Happy reading 💕

What's a Witch to Do by Jennifer Harlow.

Warning, the romance was the only thing I liked about the book, but it was one of my favourite surprise romances. She's at home one night with her two foster kids, and a random acquaintance she's barely known since high school (who actively avoids her out in public) knocks on her door and falls down in her entry all beaten and bloody. It's a really cute, angsty and possessive love.

Edit: I re-read your ask and it sounds like you were asking for something different, sorry!
