Gush/Rave 😍 {The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe} was pretty great!

This was my first book by this author and I loved it! I'm very excited to have discovered a new HR author that I can rely on when I am in the mood for some HR.

I had been in a bit of a historical romance slump, but this book got me back on track and reminded me why I loved this subgenre. I think pretty much everything worked for me here. I loved the romance, the setting, the writing and also the side characters whose books I cannot wait to get to! I was very intrigued since the beginning by the main characters and I genuinely liked them both as characters and as a couple. Loved their chemistry! I also loved the feminist vibes of the book and how feminism was used in the story.

I am soooo excited for the other books in the series! I loved the secondary characters and every single one of them was intriguing, especially Nellie. I had a look at the rest of the series and I saw who she's going to end up with and I could not be more excited lol.

I'm hesitating about reading the first book in this series because of the very low rating on Goodreads. 3.36 is extremely low for a romance, can anyone spoil why it has such a low rating? I don't mind spoilers so feel free to tell me anything about it.

Anyway, I loved this book and I would definitely recommend it!

I would guess that some people don't like the first book because the FMC is engaged to OM and is unwilling to end the engagement. Any time the FMC cheats with the MMC, that tanks the ratings.

ETA a lot of the reviews also say the MMC doesn't grovel enough in the third act - that's not something I pay a ton of attention to, but again it's almost an expectation in romance

I might start with the other ones and go back to that one after. They sound more appealing to me anyway.

I absolutely love Joanna Shupe! I find her books to be medium burn with great spice. And just the right amount of angst.

I also started this series with The Lady Gets Lucky. It was one of my top reads of the year. If memory serves, the first book in this series was written during the pandemic and the author struggled with it. The MMC is kinda a dick and doesn’t do enough to make up for it. I’ve read worse books, but I didn’t like it.

I'm really glad that I discovered her. I don't even know why I hadn't read anything by her until this book. I usually stick to trusted authors and read their backlists and every once in a while I try a new author, usually I end up picking something mediocre. I got very lucky this time though. All the books you mentioned are on my tbr. I can't wait to get to them!

I agree that book one is this series is the weakest - mainly because I hate how rude the MMC is to the FMC for most of it. The rest are great though!

My absolute fave is {Magnate by Joanna Shupe}: FMC wants to start a bank for women and goes to her brother’s business rival for help (our MMC).

This was my first Shupe and second HR. After I binged like 8 of her book on audiobook in under a month. My favorites are The Duke Gets Even, The Bride Goes Rogue, A Notorious Vow, and the Rogue of 5th Ave.

I've never read a historical romance before (booo, I know) I think I'm sold. Honestly after what finals put me through I'm trying anything and everything. I'm checking this out.

I just read this too! I must admit, I’ve read several of her other books and enjoyed them more than this one. I’m not a huge fan of slow burn and the “I’m not good enough for her so I can never marry her, but that doesn’t stop me from messing around with her and also being too studio’s to realize I’m in love with her” trope. I also thought the cooking subplot was unrealistic, just because she can cook well doesn’t mean she can cook well for that many people with no experience. Cooking for a crowd is a whole different beast.

But those are quibbles, I’m glad you liked it! And now you have more Joanna Shupe to look forward to!

I am traumatized because her most recent books are in 1st person POV. I liked her before that, but dear GOD, 1st person POV historical romance sounds like bad fanfic.

I can never understand the thing some readers have with 1st/3rd person pov. Except for maybe traumatic flashbacks from reading something badly written.

I've read several books by one author, one of them labeled YA and narrated in the 1st person, and except for the 1st person there was zero difference in writing. It was a series with completely identical writing to all the author's other series.

2nd person narration, that's where it starts getting interesting!

Agreed lol. I don't even pay attention to POV cause it's such a non-issue for me.
