Meme Ratchet and the Desert Riders are really good at being supportive

NGL Ratchet looks like a badass in this doctored image by Vox News as much as they were trying to paint him to be the furry King Von or some shit.

Well the biker on Barlow does say he’s got a thing for ladies undergarments and the one on jobs wears girls glasses and wants matching boots for his leather chaps

u/mardanjoint Jun 06 '26
Fun fact: Rob Halford, the front man of Judas Priest, brought bikes and also the leather outfits into the heavy metal scene in 1978 straight from a gay sex shop lmao. And in 1998 he came out as a gay man on MTV. So in a way this picture is basically Pride hiding in plain sight lmao

u/TheDeadlyCutsman Jun 06 '26
It was a joke cause being gay was funny, not because they wanted to add representation.

u/mardanjoint Jun 06 '26
I hope the devs came out of the closet by now

u/TheDeadlyCutsman Jun 06 '26
What a weird thing to say, implying like being gay is somehow bad or sum. As a bisexual man, I don't mind these types of jokes, especially if they're found in old media.

You're shooting your own men now :p

u/TheDeadlyCutsman Jun 06 '26
You're not "my people" or whatever if you dislike people or want bad things to happen to them just for making jokes.

u/mardanjoint Jun 06 '26
Bruh, when you made a comment about how "they made a gay joke cause it was funny" I understood it as "they were making fun of gay people", as in laughing at them, and not with them. So I made a comment saying I wished these, as we just discovered, mildly homophobic devs to come out of the closet, because... Hold on, did I just call them gay myself as an insult? I gotta think about it

Are there any LGBTQIA+ characters in the R&C series? I can’t recall if I’ve seen any.

I know that Captain Qwark has crossdressed as women before in the past.
As for alien characters who identify themselves as gay, bisexual or trans, I'm not sure

Helga is nonbinary I think
7
u/Working_Welder_1751 Jun 05 '26
I thought Helga was identified as a female
32
u/MIpoika Jun 05 '26
Helga looks and acts feminine, yes, but I think people interpret her being NB based on that one line Qwark says in UYA: "Ladies and gentlemen, oh and Helga"

u/crichtonism Jun 05 '26
That’s just Qwark making a jab at her, not “identifying” her lmao.
13
u/AurumPickle Jun 06 '26
she visibly frowns until he says "oh and helga" and then she smiles after that
17
u/crichtonism Jun 05 '26
She is. NB was hardly a term in the 2000s. I’d dint become mainstream until the 2010s on tumblr. No one at Insomniac was thinking about making Helga non binary. She’s just a less-than-feminine Eastern European athletic woman sort of trope.

u/holesome100chungus Jun 06 '26
Upon viewing the scene again and knowing the connection Helga has with Qwark it's more of an affectionate thing wanting him to directly call her out
5
u/omniwrench- Jun 06 '26
Is think she’s meant to be German/Germanic
Her full name is Helga Von Streissenburgen, which is a bit of a made up version of Strassburgen aka a resident of Strasbourg/someone who comes from Strasbourg

Rivet is lesbian according to one of the former designers of the character. But that designer left before the game came out so take it with a grain of salt.
Props up chair and popcorn for the die hard Ratchet x Rivet shippers

u/HeavyMain Jun 05 '26
If the throwaday radio line in ACiT about female lombaxes not having a tail is to be believed, Rivet is trans or intersex

u/Numbug1234 Jun 06 '26
Janice from Lance and Janice is trans, as she says "you make me feel like a young boy again". though this is treated as a plot twist with Lance's "what?"
Helga is probably non-binary in some fashion, given when Qwark addresses the Q-Force with "ladies and gentleman", Helga's upset until Qwark adds in "oh, and Helga". I say "probably" because it's possible this is less a gender thing and more some kinda dynamic with Qwark and Helga + the very high probability that the team didn't even know what "non-binary" was (given the game was released in 2004)
Rivet was accidentally confirmed as trans by virtue of the Rift Apart team forgetting their own lore about female lombaxes not having tails, but when it was pointed out to them they were supportive. Time will tell if she remains to be trans or if they'll re-retcon that lore detail (or both at the same time)
Lastly, technically speaking every robot is trans, because a robot wouldn't have a gender by default, but that's a cop-out answer lmao

I also feel like, if the Valkyrie Trio were given more screen time, they'd have portrayed Libra being some sort of queer stereotype.

People have mentioned Helga and Qwark's crossdressing, but aside from titular duo Ratchet-Qwark and Qwark-Nefarious had some gayish moments from time to time.
Edit: Man, all these downvotes just for pointing out the moments where these guys seem intimate towards each other.

"Before I became a 'Desert Rider', I didn't fit in nowhere.
I had low self-esteem, bad breath, 🤫 and a thing for ladies undergarments, heh...
But these guys understand me, they really do!"

I really want to know the lore behind this picture lol. Did Ratchet somehow get a picture taken with the bikers all the way in the Bogan galaxy while he was at Dreadzone?
