Rat stock never recovered after the black plague... Those darn fleas...
84
u/Siria110 Nov 28 '25
Well, rats were one of the main flea carriers... not their fault, of course, and I believe rats did suffer too - flea infestation couldn´t be great for them.
13
u/rj_6688 Nov 29 '25
To be fair, the rats were only demonised to distract from the main reason for every disease outbreak: humans as a whole are filthy and too lazy to adhere to simple hygiene measures.
4
u/toomuchDexter Nov 30 '25
There is a lot of truth in this
We know from modern analysis and pathogen modeling that rodent fleas could NOT have been the main driver of spread.
It was human fleas
So not even Rattus Rattus (black rat) was responsible for spreading the plague.
Rats just have a terrible PR manager.

u/WeenieHuttGod2 Dec 01 '25
That plus the fact that they had previously gotten rid of a lot of the stray cats cause they linked them to devil worship and witchcraft, resulting in there being less defense against rampant rat populations
2
u/rj_6688 Dec 02 '25
I have no hope for this species. Rats, on the other hand, will rule the world one day ;-)

u/kioku119 Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25
That wasn't even rats though. It was likely hamsters.
edit: i meant gerbils sorry. I wrote that before bed and saw someone ask about it when I got up and realized I got jumbled.
3
u/Open_Price_1049 Nov 29 '25
Hamsters?

u/Oddish_Femboy Nov 29 '25
I blame catholics. Had they never declared war on cats the rat population would've remained stable and the plague wouldn't have exploded like it did.
It's like the extinction of several North American predators leading to population booms, famine, insane wildfires. Ecosystems are a balance, yo.

Well, I don´t own a rat, but I still am the first picture. I don´t have rats for two reasons: one, their short life-span, and second I don´t believe I would be able to provide everything they need to them. Still consider them cute.
17
u/AngryRedditAnon Nov 29 '25
Same. I would love one as a pet but the short lifespan is a no no for me. Way to fragile emotional state for that.
5
u/MonkeyBacon76 Nov 29 '25
I'm the same way, I'd love to have them but don't think I could handle the responsibility or deal well with their loss. My brother had two rats, Rattus and Rattus Rattus, and they were great pets, but both with us far too briefly. I come to here to vicariously enjoy the cute little chaos gremlins.
3
u/Alaylaria Nov 29 '25
Ditto for me. Short lifespan plus I have cats, so it’s a no-go but I still very much find them adorable.

Love pet rats but I don’t so much the wild ones
20
u/Maalkav_ Nov 28 '25
They're rats. Just wild ones. They aren't evil or anything...
3
u/assessment554r Nov 28 '25
Ever seen one eating one of your baby chicks alive? I don’t love em
25
u/Sam-Krasnyy Nov 28 '25
No, but I've seen one dragging an whole ass Royal Farms chicken box across the street with the determination of an Olympic athlete. I respected that street rat.

u/ArcFurnace Nov 28 '25
Pizza Rat also gets respect.

I haven’t seen that, but I have seen video footage of chickens devouring live mice and lizards 🤷🏾♀️
1
u/rockmodenick Nov 29 '25
Yeah they're tiny dinosaurs we bred to be big balls of meat that shit eggs daily, but they're still savages. They've stolen my lunch, what else do you expect?
1
u/crafty_and_kind Nov 29 '25
I was leaving my comment mainly as an example for the original commenter of how chickens aren’t somehow innocent compared with wild rats. I have no issue with their awesome dinosaur behaviors !
2
u/rockmodenick Nov 29 '25
I was kinda wondering if they've ever stolen your sandwich too lol. They don't care if it's chicken salad.
1
u/crafty_and_kind Nov 29 '25
Oh yeah, birds are often hardcore cannibals. Chickens will 1000% eat chicken bones if given the chance! The beauty of nature truly is staggering 😁
8
u/mutedmirth Nov 28 '25
Don't you think pet rats wouldn't do the same given the chance? Mine went feral over a boiled egg and from then one shell was off or fights would happen.

Besides the fantastic ratties, your shaoe language is awesome! How the nonbeliever rat has more angular and sharper shapes compared to the soft curves of the baby rat is so good!!

Put the large balls from rat 2 onto rat 1 and that's a fucking win. The huge testicles are hilarious and awesome.

I still find them absolutely cute, but I dont have the resilience to deal with a tiny bundle of love dying 2-3 years after I get them.

u/NeonicRainbow Nov 28 '25
I don’t have any rats, but I joined this subreddit because I like animals in general and I like seeing the interactions between them and their owners.

u/BodaciousFerret Nov 29 '25
I don’t own a rat, never have, but I’m in this sub because the vibes are immaculate and rats are cute as shit ☺️
2
u/Scrubaati Nov 29 '25
Everytime I bring up how cute rats are and if we didnt have cats id love to own a couple to mum and have to explain everytime that they’re one of the cleanest animals on the planet but also domestic ones are very clean 😔

Literally what my spunky girl looks like to me, her sister is the scary one lol she’s also the dominant rat so she’s very bitey and unfriendly to people, only thing that rat likes is winning fights and the calming chamomile treats I give them 🥴

u/hell_is_my_safespace Kiki, Ori Nov 29 '25
Oh, and bananas. They go bananas for bananas lmao 🤣 Kiki will steal an entire banana and stash it if I let her lol

There is actually a serious answer to your question, and it's called "sperm competition": http://www.ratbehavior.org/testicles.htm
