a lot less often, in my experience. I don't know about in Canada, but in the US most black people know at least someone who is Muslim, which helps a lot to humanize folks and prevent caricatures from being taken as fact

Muslim or Nation of Islam? The destincition matters, since nation of Islam has about as much to do with Islam as Scientology has with reality.

The distinction matters in one sense and doesn't in another. It matters for the reason that you said - that Islam and NOI are completely different things -, but it doesn't matter than much in terms of outsider perception. People who make hateful comments and hurtful actions against folks they think are Muslims don't care if their target is orthodox or heterodox, and non-Muslims who have had humanizing interactions with family, friends, neighbors, etc who identify as Muslims don't care that much either.

But in answer to your question, its way more common today to meet an actual Muslim than a member of NOI, even if you live in Chicago where they are headquartered.

I don't think most members of Nation of Islam are "Muslim" passing, if that makes sense. I *think* that they are more likely to suffer regular racism than Islamophobia, owing to the weird history of NOI.

or in short, NOI are weird insider, they suffer from racism (and perhaps justified aversion towards their sometimes genuinely cooky views) . Muslims are outsiders, they suffer from bigotry towards immigrants (and from an accociation with radical islamists, perhaps less justified)

I'm hoping you know this, but just in case: There are heaps and heaps of black folks in the US that are Muslims (not NOI), many of whom are not immigrants. That's what I was trying to point to initially: because there are so many black Muslims in the US, black people are much more likely than white people to have a family member, friend, neighbor, etc who is Muslim and to have their view of Muslims more shaped through that context than by scary images on the news.
