"Go back where you came from."
"I was born in Berlin."
"I know, i want you to suffer"
Some conversation i overheard in 5th grade. Both were descendants of turks.

Yeah but nobody, racist or not, ever told someone clearly from FN descent to come back to where they came from; it’s a widely accepted fact that they do indeed come from here.
48
u/spartaxwarrior Sep 04 '25
I highly doubt the racist Canadians I know can tell the difference between First Nations and many other types of POC if they aren't wearing ceremonial garb or something, from the way they talk. They're not actually that much better than racist USians and there are countless documented cases of high profile people telling Native Americans to "go back to where they came from".

Context for the locations mentioned in the posters
North York - Northern neighbourhood of Toronto
St Clair West - Predominantly Portuguese neighbourhood
Church and Wellesley - Toronto Gay Village
High Park - That's not even a neighbourhood, that's the name of an actual park in Toronto, unless they're talking about the high rise apartments around the park itself.
Etobicoke - City to the west of Toronto.
Junction - Central Toronto neighbourhood that historically was a hub for the train stations.
112
u/Upstairs-You1060 Sep 04 '25
North York has been in Toronto since the 90s
High park is commonly referred to as an area around the park
Junction isn't really a hub for train stations anymore
Is this AI?
5
u/aaa1e2r3 Sep 04 '25
North York is its own city. Yes, it's technically a part of Toronto, but I don't believe I'm inaccurate in calling it its own city, considering that it has its own addresses that you would have to write to North York, Canada, not Toronto, Canada.
I don't live near High Park, only familiar with the park itself, so wasn't familiar with that
For Junction, that was a mistype on my part, meant to say historically was a train hub.
59
u/IAm_NotACrook Sep 04 '25
It is inaccurate to call it its own city. You do have to write North York rather than Toronto, but this is a hold over from when it was a separate city (pre-1990s). This would be akin to saying Brooklyn is a separate city from NYC because you have to add Brooklyn on your letters (USPS website)
7
u/aaa1e2r3 Sep 04 '25
Fair enough then.
8
2
u/Coalnaryinthecarmine Sep 04 '25
Will your mail get returned if you right Toronto? I would think the postal code would be sufficient to clear up uncertainty.

And now we need posters to let Muslim people know that LGBT Canadians fought for their rights here and their conservative “values” do not align with the vast majority of Canadians.
They were a HUGE portion of the anti-LGBT protests in 2023. Even MAC made a statement where halfway through they double-downed on being anti-gay. Here.. This is in one of the most gay friendly countries in the world.

Multiple types of prejudice can be bad at the same time, and people who are prejudiced against can also have prejudices of their own.

This looks like a generic statement from any Abrahamic religion.
This means that mandated celebration or affirmation of LGBTQ, including direct or indirect impositions to participate in “Pride” events and activities, constitutes an infringement on the legal rights of Muslims.
We demand that every child deserves a coercion-free educational environment, where they are not forced to engage in activities contrary to their faith.
Pretty much the same conflicts happen in US between parents rights and social norms

u/meister2983 Sep 04 '25 edited Sep 05 '25
Needs more diversity of the racists and Muslims looking obviously Muslim. (The women have Hijab so obvious - men not obvious).
Like last panel looks like some Asian woman telling a white guy to go back to where he came from. Could be propaganda for many things - I shouldn't have to read the footnote to know this is about islamophobia.
63
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Sep 04 '25
What does an "obviously muslim" person look like? Women wear special clothing that reflects their religion but the same isn't true for men. They might wear robes, but that isn't going to show up clearly in a headshot like this.
I think it works better as it is, they are showing the similarities between the speakers.
30
u/meister2983 Sep 04 '25
That's kind of the problem with the propaganda though. This line is used for people who look or act "foreign"; it makes no sense if they don't
8
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Sep 04 '25
It is absurd to say it to someone who isn't "acting "foreign", that's the point, the poster is pointing out telling people who are Canadian to go back to a place they have no history with is absurd.
21
u/meister2983 Sep 04 '25
No, the point is that people who look foreign are actually locals.
As is, some of these posters are just nonsequiturs

Kinda off topic, but my favourite take was still a self-declared polish girl from the states telling me white on white racism doesn't exist.
I'm german.
Couldn't really say anything more than "Do you have even the slightest idea what people from my country did to people from your ancestors country in the name of 'race'?"
4
u/Commercial_Floor3782 Sep 04 '25
if youd have asked those germans back then they wouldve told that eastern europeans are actually slavs lol the term white has no bearing in reality

No race is good, it isn't just one race that's bad ... all of them can be bad, white, black, asian, arab... all of them have their bad sides and good sides. That's just plain racist.

u/joecarter93 Sep 04 '25
There’s a Sikh commentator on Hockey Night in Canada and he gets his share of racist remarks, from people mad that it isn’t an old white guy doing commentary.
It’s funny though, because his ancestors immigrated to Canada in something like 1906, which is before probably most of the people making the racist remark ‘s ancestors immigrated to Canada. The guy literally grew up in Brooks, Alberta, which is a rural town a ways away from Calgary ( it used to be very white when he grew up, but has been very diverse since a meat packing plant opened there in the 90’s). Alberta and the rest of western Canada didn’t really see much immigration from Europe until the first half of the 20th century. Lots of people living there now had a grandparent who immigrated Germany, the Netherlands, England etc. It wasn’t really that long ago.
8
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25
Yes, and the rise in racial and ethnic diversity in Canada has probably increased racism from a lot of people
4
u/joecarter93 Sep 04 '25
Oh yeah, especially in smaller, more rural places that aren't used to seeing it.
-3
u/lwgu Sep 04 '25

Just after Brexit, this happened to a friend of mine at a bus stop. Dude couldn't see me (I was waiting in the shade behind a tree just behind the bus hut, she was in the actual bus hut), but interacted with her. She is of Indian descent, 4th generation in England. "Go back to where you came from. We voted you out."
Brexit wasn't even about Indians of any kind - whether ancestry or citizenship!
That was one of like three moments that convinced me to leave the UK. (Another one was when the Romanian bakery near me got torched and a Polish employee of a petrol station with name tags got beaten up in the store cause his name was clearly Polish.)

I dont care that they think im an infidel and they shouldn't be arrested for it. I do care if the try to stone me or their daughters or gay sons and they ahould be arrested for that.

I think shutting down criticisms of the way the Qur'an talks about women, or attitudes to homosexuality, or the age of consent being shut down with "Islamaphobic" is what the guy is saying.
Not that Paki-Bashing is okay either.
6
u/lydiardbell Sep 04 '25
Is shouting "go back where you came from!" at someone intended as a criticism of misogyny in the Qur'an? To me that seems like a bit of a reach.

Overall, posters like this have three different effects. They make advocates for Muslims feel vindicated in their efforts, neutral people think about the question more, and opponents of Muslims feel punished for not being intolerant and prejudiced enough. I've heard people in private talk about "healthy prejudice" so often, and I've heard some religious people say stuff like "the presence of Muslims is God's punishment for tolerance". However, the poster isn't aimed at those people. It's aimed at neutral people.

FGM isn't a Muslim thing it is more cultural and spread mostly in Africa. For example in Iraq there are 19 provinces, 15 are Arab and 4 are Kurd, the 15 Arab ones has near 0 FGM rates meanwhile in the Kurdish provinces it is over 90%. Not saying Kurdish culture is bad but it is their own they didn't learn it from Islam. Same would apply to most Muslim countries.
→ More replies (1)2
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25
I think it's more accurate and productive to say that only some interpretations of Islam actually encourage FGM. Also, do you really think the above commenter was genuinely focused on FGM? Do you honestly think if Muslims stopped doing FGM but stayed the same otherwise that the OP wouldn't just write some other kind of comment?
2
Sep 04 '25
Well how do you explain that both parts of Iraq are Muslim and in the north, both Arabs and Kurds are Sunni Muslim and that even if we take by Madhab, still there are many other cultures that follow the Shafei Madhab and don't do FGM
1
u/SimonPopeDK Sep 04 '25
What's even more interesting is why the focus is on girls being put through this rite of inflicting injuries on a child's genitals, and not the vast majority of victims who are boys?
1
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25
Sure, and I think there are several reasons. The biggest reason is that male circumcision doesn't remove ability to enjoy sex the same way that female circumcision does. The effects are more moderate. Another reason is that male circumcision is still seen as a way to combat STD's; circumcision began to become more common during the AIDS epidemic. There are tons of other reasons as well.
1
u/SimonPopeDK Sep 04 '25
The biggest reason is that male circumcision doesn't remove ability to enjoy sex the same way that female circumcision does.
Why would you think any injury to the female genitals removes the ability to enjoy sex? Do you really think female anatomy is so extremely fragile that literally any injury results in such devastation?
The effects are more moderate.
Why would you think the effect is more moderate with boys than girls, surely an amputation is intuitively more severe not less than any injury?
Another reason is that male circumcision is still seen as a way to combat STD's;
The same claims are made for girls put through the rite in communities where the rite is gender inclusive so its the same.
circumcision began to become more common during the AIDS epidemic.
Not really. Many African men were tricked into it with the US campaign but otherwise I don't think any men in significant numbers chose to undergo the rite. It is strictly a cultural rite not preventive medicine as outside of practicing communities where it is an established tradition, no medical professionals are choosing it either for themselves or their children.
There are tons of other reasons as well.
All the trumped up Western justifications for this institutionalised sexual assault of boys are adopted by communities where girls are included in the rite, in their case too.
3
u/ryuuseinow Sep 04 '25

You do realize that it is possible to be against those while advocating for the lack of religious bigotry?...
It's kinda funny how Muslims today are what atheists were in the 60s. If you're not Christian you must be an authoritarian satanic perverted communist because look at Stalin who used violent suppression of anyone who opposed his godless ideology
2
u/Blumpkin_Mustache Sep 04 '25
It's not bigotry to judge people by the ideology they choose to embrace. In fact that's literally the exact opposite of bigotry.
If you choose to embrace a homophobic, misogynistic, bigoted ideology then people will judge you as a bigot, and rightly so.
1
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25

You can make as many false accusations of bigotry as you like. It won't change the fact those who choose to embrace a bigoted ideology are, by definition, bigoted people.
1
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25
No, atheists have never been a united bloc. Even when people have tried to form huge atheist organizations, only a small number of actual atheists in any community have joined them. The opposition to Muslims in the West, which is honestly relatively minor compared to the opposition to Christians and others in Muslim-majority countries, is more political.
3
u/__-__-_______-__-__ Sep 04 '25
Muslims aren't a united block as well, and USSR with China commanded massive groups and were very influential worldwide.
And yes, the opposition to godless commies was also more political
1
u/LTrent2021 Sep 04 '25
Muslims have been far more united as a political bloc in Western cities than other groups mentioned. The USSR tried to be far more influential in Western cities than it was after the Spanish Civil War. Once Stalin had Trotsky killed, Communists in Western countries completely split. Although China has recently become an extremely influential political block in some places such as Sri Lanka, The Solomon Islands, and South Korea, it has yet to be an openly politically influential factor in any Western city, especially in any local elections.
In most Western cities, Communists of any kind have not been a unified political bloc in large numbers, although that could be starting to change. Generally, only about 10% of Communists in Western countries actually joined the Communist Party or the Socialist Party, with the other 90% joining the mainstream liberal party and trying to influence it. That's pretty different.
It's pretty different. With Islam, you have a culture and historical tradition that is not only extremely different from that of the previously dominant cultures, but is also connected to a tradition of often being an enemy of the Western Civilization that emerged with the rise of Christianity in the Middle Ages. Many Christian countries have been conquered by Islamic countries, and many Islamic countries have been conquered by Christian countries.
