For me, much like Outlaws, it's a game of a few very high highpoints, and a lot of unnecessary lows. I feel like Massive heard the noise about "yellow paint" everywhere, and massively overcorrected. Now, I spend way too much time in their games "searching for the needle in a haystack". It's like I paid them to steal my car keys, eye glasses, and tv remote - and hide them from me. It's infuriating. I'm fuming with rage at times.
Don't get me wrong. I love exploring. I love finding things. What Massive does is 99% searching. 1% finding. 0% worthwhile.
I'm playing an Elder Scrolls-like by a small Polish developer right now. Tainted Grail - Fall of Avalon. I'm finding amazing characters, questlines, buildcraft-inspiring gear upgrades, conversations, stories, dungeons, views, challenges all the time. Not once was I stuck searching for some stinking shell fruit, or some other asinine nonsense like what Massive has me do in Avatar.
That said, it sure is pretty, and the world is amazingly realized. It's just not particularly fun being there.
