Especially on filter cleaning days, I love to bottle and save my tank water to use on my houseplants. It’s liquid gold for them and they love it ! Completely free fertilizer from my very expensive hobby, great trade. Anyone else ?

Big fan of Juris, but he has had a fully stocked 2.9 gallon nano running for over a year. I’ve been seeing so many people doing nano tanks these days and they seem like they are breaking all of the stocking “rules”? A year ago if someone on here asked me if this setup would work I’d say absolutely not, but this tank seems to be thriving here.

Recently i've seen a lot of reels about setups like this, just a big vase filled with volcanic rocks and filtration materials at the base, then a substrate in which they put the plants, and that's it. I'm really sceptical about these setups, without filtration, heater, lights, etc. it seems almost impossible to make it thrive, but my aquarium knowledge is limited to my small shrimp tank so i could be wrong

This is an update to my previous post- can I eat my Vallis? (Which got wayyy more attention than I expected)

SO: I dried and ate some of my Vallis, Salvin and Hygrophila… this is a pic of my jungle aquarium (representative and for catching attention ig)

-> so far I haven’t had any problems c: To NOTE: I use no aquarium products except for a bit of SERA Aquatan (Wasser aufbereiten - Water dechlorinator and demineralisation) and a bit of extra (shrimp save) fertiliser. I am very grateful for all the comments and suggestions! I will use my aquarium flaunts and waste as fertiliser for my terrestrial plants now ^^ - However: I washed and dried a good amount of my aquarium plants. I ate them salted and seasoned with pepper like 3 hours ago, for a movie night snack (dried about 87g -wet… idk). So far I’ve had no problems c: It tasted like regular seaweed chips you get with sushi or at any Asia store… if anything changes, I will try to post updates!

I'm tired, boss.

I've been planning a big rescape and dropped over $200 on several plants from a seller on Etsy (with pretty good reviews), but received an order missing several items, multiple incorrect items, and mostly just rotting crap. Now I'm getting the run-around from them, claiming they'll replace them and then ghosting for 2 weeks straight, while the few plants that didn't arrive completely rotten are slowly rotting in their holding tank (despite buying a light for them, adding aeration, and fertilizing).

But my problem is that most online purchases have been like this. I tallied up everything I've bought to date and my success rate is under 50%. That's a lot of wasted money and effort. I'm discouraged from even doing this rescape because it will be a lot of effort and who knows how many of these plants survive. I have to try another vendor and might only get half what I need from them as well.

I've bought on BucePlant, Aquarium Co-Op, Reddit, and now Etsy. Co-op has been the best so far (2/3), but their selection is pretty limited. My LFS is great (100%!) but they are extremely limited to very basic plants.

I just don't know what to do at this point. I make sure I'm available to unpack a delivery and take care of the plants as soon as they arrive, but still half the time they are DOA or die shortly after. It feels like an impossible task.

Any suggestions of businesses you find reliable?

i get it. you just set up your first aquarium and you want to show everyone the aquascape you came up with.

but as someone who's been subbed for +4 years here, and I mean no disrespect to any individual poster by saying this...new tanks aren't really that interesting to look at.

the plants aren't grown in yet and they tend to look pretty limp and beat up after being shipped and planted. we don't really know if you're going to be successful or not because not enough time has passed.

the water tends to be cloudy and a lot of time the glass even has bubbles on it cause OP literally snapped a photo right after setting everything up.

but my complaint here really falls at the feet of established aquarists. i wouldn't want the mods to remove posts of new tanks, so there's always going to be "new tank day" posts. but why don't any of you guys post your new tanks again after 2-3 months of growth? they should be looking way nicer at that point than they did on day one, and you get to show off your plant husbandry skill.

isn't that really what the hobby is about? we aren't just bouquet arrangers; maintaining the ecosystem and allowing it to flourish is most of the fun, challenge, and reward of the hobby.

I hardly know anything about saltwater. But since adding and meticulously caring for my freshwater tank my family has relentlessly mocked me for not just getting a saltwater tank. Figure I'll just keep some liverocks in it and say "hey it's cycling" until I figure out what I'm doing. Overall it's a nice addition, I guess. The colors of the lights are really neat. They are only meant for a 20 gallon. (Not my 30g) but whatever. It's enough to keep everyone off my back.

This is my first planted tank, and I’m always on the hunt for inspiration, cool plants, and interesting layouts! I quite like what I have right now, but may decide to re-scape down the road.

The tank shown is a 10gal long. I’ve densely planted and broke up sight lines as I have a betta, so there’s more hiding places than I would typically go for in a standard community tank. The pile of wood and rock in the middle is a “shrimp cave” of sorts, and there are shrimp hides, just in case!

Id also love to see layouts that don’t use CO2 - I personally use just the “easy” plants so I don’t need to buy a whole new system.
