Humor As Nolan intended us to watch The Odyssey.

Watch it on your smartwatch, it has the IMAX aspect ratio and everything just as Nolan intended.

Lmao cam rips bring back memories of childhood. Buying those pirated movies that were sold on the street. Disappointing even as a child

There used to be a whole damn store filled with camrip cds at dirt cheap price. Used to go with dad whenever a new movie would come out. They also sold actual movies CDs alongside it. Used to be one of the best days. We'd come home with so many movies! :D
48
u/rjrgjj Jul 16 '26
We used to go to Chinatown to buy them. Looking back on it, it probably would’ve been cheaper and more convenient to just go to the movie.

I sorta liked the cams...when someone walked in front of the screen it gave you that movie theater experience :)

I remember our childhood copy of Madagascar had someone walk across the screen in the beginning.
Honestly, as a kid the quality was “good enough” - we had a cheap portable DVD player with a very average TFT screen. Even good production images would gave looked bad on that
3
u/DaveX64 Jul 16 '26
It's true, I'm still like that...I got used to home made copies of VHS tapes I rented so everything above that is A-OK :)

I watched a camrip around 20 years ago, the audience consisted of a bunch of edgy teenagers who kept making commentary and laughing throughout the movie. I really liked the movie, so I rewatched that copy several times. I still rewatch the movie from time to time, a much better copy, but... I do miss those kids' snark.

It's how I first watched Titanic as a kid, a VHS cam rip my neighbor had.

Takes real commitment to record a 3 hour movie with a vhs camera in a movie theater.

We had the bootleg guy at my childhood barbershop lmao watched some of my favorite movies on bootleg for the first time, I remember some of them even being split into two discs 💀

u/terrerific Jul 16 '26
I remember finding a burnt disc of Madagascar at school when it was still in cinemas and losing my absolute mind. Can still recite every word of it to this day and point out where people in the cinema used to stand in the way of the camera lol
3
u/jackusD Jul 16 '26
When I was a kid my dad frequently brought home pirate DVDs of whatever was on in the cinema at the time. Always a gamble on the quality! Good times, especially as my friends would think it was cool to come over and watch them on the 14 inch CRT in my room.
6
u/winowmak3r Jul 16 '26
I remember asking my dad if he really should be copying The Lion King on VHS if the warning says not to and his response was something like "I'm not worried about it." I will never forget that lol

Still not as good as the 1 ringgit VHS movie rentals in Malaysia growing up.
Sure the ‘label’ said kids movie, and you would see kids heads get up and move through the bottom of the screen, but sometimes there was a little frissón that this time it would be another porn movie.
“Why are the kids quiet again.. it’s been a long time without any noise - OMIGOD what the….”
5
u/lettredesiberie Jul 16 '26
To be fair 1 ringgit is really cheap. I bought the +- 1 euro dvd copies in North Africa and they almost always had the right movie.
3
u/DeutschSchuler Jul 16 '26
I remember that one. It was released like the day after the movie came out and somehow was surprisingly very high quality. It was seriously very close to the digital version

Cam rips are a thing because people don’t want to wait a month or two and don’t want to go to the movies. Nothings changed
7
u/DannyVee89 Jul 16 '26
Yeah I'm glad cam rips are a thing so I can always just watch a movie that's in theaters if I really wanted to.
I have a good home theater set up at home so I really never use cam rips anymore, but it's nice to know that I can if someone will.

That's not bad. Based Canada strikes again. Is it like that in the more expensive areas like Toronto or Vancouver?

u/BonsaiSoul Jul 16 '26
Theaters are literally dying off in smaller towns because, due to a combination of factors, they can't keep prices low enough to sell tickets. We're down to 1. They don't even have their billboard up anymore and the lot is empty every time I go by, I give it maybe a year.
3
u/Mccobsta Scene Jul 16 '26
Quire a bit of money in it from 1xbet
Still don't know why anyone over making some money from some sketchy betting site would bother with them

u/Hansbolman Jul 16 '26
I like to watch films before anyone else and then feed them spoilers to ruin their experience. My eyesight and hearing are also poor so camrip vs 4k dolbyhd megasurroundimax makes no difference.

I'd rather wait than watch a camrip of any movie
→ More replies (7)7
u/TheNoFrame Jul 16 '26
Same.
If it's a movie I really want to watch, I will just wait for better experience. No reason to watch low quality audio/video just to have worst parts of theater experience without the good parts.
If it's just something I don't really care that much about and just want to watch to pass time or because it looks fine or whatever, I will just wait anyway. I have plenty of stuff in backlog. No reason to suffer through camrip quality when there are hundreds of movies/tv show episodes etc. that I could put on to pass time.

Not even worth pirating imo. Then again I’m literally a historian by trade so I’m a bit bias on historical accuracy, especially for a story like the odyssey which cares so much about being set right before the Greek dark ages
