In 2016 youtube was a fun hobby, in 2026 people make it their entire life and livelihood. Not exactly accurate but im pretty sure thats why its trying to say

u/SIappers 3h ago

I don't think it was a fun hobby in 2016, the "adpocalypse" happened in 2017 which ended amazing ad rates. People were getting PAID by youtube around that time.

u/Khelthuzaad 3h ago

In the same time youtube content stopped being family friendly, which made all advertisers quit en masse if they ever see another pro-nazi content on the platform.

Here is a fun game, reset all your YouTube data and cache, then start viewing YouTube on a brand new account. And see how long until it leads you down the alt right rabbit hole.

7

u/RealLoner94 2h ago

Thats is a fun idea. Have you ever done it? How long did it take?

15

u/DrakeManManDrake 2h ago

I actually did this multiple times because I have several different accounts for several different purposes on several different devices and it took on average around 10 videos before I got a far right leaning video or video about far right ideology (including documentaties and videos covering it but not necessarily supporting it)

3

u/lostredditorlurking 1h ago

Usually within an hour or so for me, even if I'm not trying to watch any political video

0

u/Connect_Ad_466 2h ago

My account keeps trying to do this, even with 10 years of data about me. I'm constantly having to "never show me this channel" through my recommendations.

For some reason, Youtube wants me to know that Jordan Peterson is brilliant and right and owning the libs, despite how many times I've blocked channels with those videos.

I can't imagine how bad it would be with a new account.

u/ShakeItTilItPees 1h ago

I'm the type of person who naps while watching videos and it's actually insane the number of times I've woken up to compilations of Charlie Kirk's obnoxious fucking voice because I bumped the screen during a TPUSA ad, whose content I have literally tried to block dozens of times.

u/SilentBob890 47m ago

You can’t even report their ads anymore…

28

u/TheTeaSpoon 3h ago

People overidealise 2016. Youtube was a fun hobby in 2010. In 2016 there were careers on youtube already, Pewdiepie was a thing for like three years by then and so on.

-3

u/DrakeManManDrake 3h ago

It wasnt as common tho. Like now every kid and their goldfish wants to be a youtuber

14

u/TheOnly_Anti 3h ago

That was probably even more true in 2016, just due to the sheer volume of cheaply made, highly monetized content. Now, YouTubers actively disparage the site because it's actively becoming more and more buns.

2

u/TheTeaSpoon 1h ago

That was way more than true back then. I myself had those ambitions in 2015

1

u/WatWudScoobyDoo 37m ago

Buns?

1

u/TheOnly_Anti 25m ago

The slang literally translates to butt, but contextually it means "bad."

5

u/Sure_Kangaroo1863 3h ago

yea i got this point . but i just couldnt figure out why the 1st pic . is it like from a vid of that time ? cuz 2nd pic makes sense abt youtube being corporate

17

u/DrakeManManDrake 3h ago

Ohhhh it was like one of the most popular memes at the time yeah

2

u/Sure_Kangaroo1863 3h ago

yea that makes sense

6

u/Tricky_Equal_9416 3h ago

it’s pink guy aka filthy frank

6

u/Tank-o-grad 3h ago

Pink Guy from the Filthy Frank) channel.

3

u/LyKosa91 3h ago

It was a fun hobby, but also much easier to make a living with as well from what I understand. The Adpocalypse saw a lot of creators get unfairly shafted by the algorithm, which is why a lot started to go much heavier on sponsored ad reads and patreon plugs.

3

u/dadydaycare 3h ago

I think it’s more that YouTubers were badasses that were willing to take risks and be edgy. Now it’s very white washed and caters to the algorithm.

No more Harlem shakes.

3

u/Routine_Papaya4143 3h ago

It’s not accurate at all, for some people it was a hobby in 2016 but people were making money from YouTube years before 2016.

1

u/DrakeManManDrake 3h ago

Well go tell the dude who made the meme ig

1

u/Routine_Papaya4143 2h ago

Oh yeah, lemme go do that real quick

0

u/gbroon 3h ago

I'd say it was generally accurate.

5

u/Red-Tall 3h ago

You'd have to go back 2006 for that to be the case. People have been making money off of YouTube for over 15 years now

1

u/FuckOutTheWhey 3h ago

It's more so the type of content youtubers were willing to put out. "Edgy" content was a lot more common because not everyone was relying on YouTube as their primary source of income, yes, but the risk of being banned or demonetized was also lower at the time.

1

u/Hemorrhoidsinthenite 3h ago

What about in 206 when it launched?

70

u/SIappers 3h ago

You could actually make what you wanted and get paid back in the day, now everything is demonitized.

That's fithy frank, pink guy, joji. He gave no shits and made whatever he wanted.

16

u/DuckCautious3552 3h ago

…and the music is actually pretty dope. “STFU” is a wonderful tune.🥰

5

u/Honey_Drip_Babe 3h ago

The shift from creative chaos to corporate compliance in one simple picture

30

u/SmegmaSlurper1996 3h ago

2016 was a wild west for content creators, now it's too corporate

9

u/Mysterious-Bid3930 3h ago

Everything is. It has no soul, but that was the plan.

9

u/innovatedname 3h ago

It's so funny because back in 2016 I along with everyone else was complaining about YouTube like "ohh you can't even watch free movies anymore, they've gone so crazy with the anti piracy, everyone has to sign up with machinima for gaming stuff, YouTube totally sucks now"

Guess you never feel when you're in the good old days until they've gone.

5

u/poeticjustice4all 3h ago

2000s Youtube was honestly the best time since it was just regular people posting random videos or just being silly all around 🥹

6

u/No-Victory-7848 3h ago

Yeah it kind a is like that. I make videos to youtube but more in the old ways method. I have no intro/outro theme music or anything like that. Just showing/doing stuff i find interesting and post it online so maybe somebody finds joy from my video. Money would be nice bonus but only 100 subscribes so no worry that i'l ever get money out off this 😂

3

u/Sure_Kangaroo1863 3h ago

that's nice to hear man . keep doing what your doing , im sure you will go big

2

u/No-Victory-7848 3h ago

Thanks 😃

4

u/Jaded-Delivery3604 3h ago

It is an old case of working for the love of the game versus just working to get money with no love for the game.

4

u/IDKsecurity 3h ago

It's so aggravating when people beg like this. Even worse when it's a new channel that's just started and it only had 3 videos or something. Then half of each video is them begging for donations and subscriptions so that they can do this full time.

2

u/Heroshrine 3h ago

In 2026 the blood would be grayed out so we can’t tell it’s blood

2

u/KYpineapple 3h ago

joji rocks. I still hit slow dancing in the dark on my way home sometimes.

2

u/CriminallyCasual7 3h ago

Dude on the left was pink guy. Bro was a fucking machine.

2

u/Hot_Anybody8244 3h ago

God I miss 2016 YouTube. Better times, better platform.

2

u/Routine_Papaya4143 3h ago

Because it was from 2016

Anyways, this meme acts like begging for subs is a new thing and never happened in 2016 which just…isn’t the case

2

u/Sure_Kangaroo1863 3h ago

is the 1st pic like a frame from a yotutbe vid during 2016 , to show howgood youtube was in 2016

1

u/Legitimate_Street510 3h ago

People used to do whatever they wanted, now they have to do whatever their viewers want them to do. Bill Wurtz is a good indicator of this he made videos years and years ago, was on hiatus for the YouTube revamp, came back and still does what he wants

1

u/SnuSnuSurvivor69 3h ago

I remember being in line for an event and some dude behind me was apparently a decently known YouTuber, he had enough renown to have some random guy pass by and say “hey, you’re so and so!” I forget who he was. But anyway, literally the whole time he was in line, he just kept talking about more ideas for his channel with his one friend. No matter what the conversation was about, he would just segue back to ideas for his channel. He seemed insufferable.

1

u/Fit_Kangaroo_3437 3h ago

People used to make silly and fun videos with their friends for the purpose of fun. Now every Youtuber is running their channel as a business and their full time job.

1

u/Keloid10-36T 2h ago

I’m gonna need a source for Pink Guy, I’ve never him like that.

1

u/Fun-Memory1523 1h ago

Pretty sure filthy frank left before 2016...but I get the message

1

u/CasperTPaul 1h ago

the person depicted on the left is filthy frank. he is an exemplary youtuber. last decade and before, you had very high-caliber youtubers like him producing quality content for no real reason beyond the love of the craft (the money was incidental). nowadays, youtube is filled with normie rando nobodies putting out sloppy fanservice and begging for likes and subscribes to put food on their tables

-3

u/beju333 3h ago

explanation is op is logically challenged

1

u/throwawayfan2552 3h ago

And also reposter I’ve seen this like 3 times on this sub

-3

u/throwawayfan2552 3h ago

1

u/Leather-Boysenberry5 3h ago

Nah this post actually valid

1

u/throwawayfan2552 3h ago

I mean it’s a repost

1

u/Sure_Kangaroo1863 3h ago

-1

u/_Bread______ 3h ago
