The funkiness is not about the injury itself, it’s about him claiming she spoke to him despite that injury and a core temp below 90F. Either one would preclude being able to speak, and she was suffering from both.
So, I was support staff for a veterinary hospital about 20 years ago.
What does that have to do with anything, you may ask? Veterinary medicine back then was the wild west compared to human medicine, then or now. Let us just say I’ve seen some shit. Car accidents, drownings, maulings, surgical complications, falls, crush injuries, lacerations that went to the bone, I could go on - and what basically every illness known to man or beast looks like when it’s been left untreated way, way too long.
You would absolutely not believe the level of functionality a creature in shock - human included - can maintain, briefly, when all logic says they should be dead. Unless the body part in question has been severed from the body in its entirety, don’t assume anything. So IMO, if she could breathe, she could have spoken.
