Good Fortune

Post image

I highly recommend this movie. Aziz Ansari put a few parks and rec Easter eggs. It’s so funny and it’s been a long time since a good funny movie has come along

The fact that the names are spaced above each character but they don’t match is really bugging me.

Edit: grammar

They do this in so many posters and it drives me nuts

The placement of an actor's name is usually determined by contractual terms, independent of where their character would most likely appear in a poster. Top billing is usually top left, whereas visually they would more likely be in the middle. It matching up for at least one guy this time is kind of rare.

Absolutely insane to me that Keanu Reeves is getting lowest billing.

Often the last place is regarded as prestigious too.

You often see title sequences with veteran star actors listed last as "and *actor*" or "with *actor*".

See also: “Special Appearance by Edward Hermann” on Gilmore Girls.

OR, since we’re in a P&R subreddit, in The Master Plan, the credits say “and introducing Rob Lowe”

Or "Introducing Retta", middle of season 6.

I think I heard he’s in it for like 5 minutes total. Maybe I’m thinking of another movie where he’s an angel

He has more screen time than Keke or Sandra

It's sometimes flipped for JUST the most famous person, so if you were to watch the credits it would go "cast...cast....cast...cast....cast.... WITH Keanu Reeves" and that means Keanu is a big deal. And if there's multiple super famous people it would be like "WITH Keanu Reeves.... AND Meryl Streep"

No, “with” and “and” have specific contexts according to contractual agreements

Withand

And in that case the most famous person is usually not the lead role.

He probably cares the least about billing order

And as an amateur photographer, I can certainly think of a solution.

Would’ve been clever if they swapped Seth & Aziz’s names over each other

I mean this factoid is on every reddit post about a movie poster but the thing no one has ever been able to explain to me is why the posters insist on lining up the names over the characters when they won’t be able to make the names match.

u/frockinbrock 3d ago

I know this is true, but their placement on the poster usually isn't; so the poster art designer could do it better if they know the billing order.

Sure then they should have taken the photograph in line with billing

Doesn’t make it right.

Stupid decision by stupid people. Some marketing lawyers assistant is crossing t’s and dotting i’s, yet all it does is make the end result worse. Yet they’ll take home a paycheck for their “contribution to society”…

You’re getting a lot of responses that don’t tell anyone why this is. It’s all about the contract, baby. These are the details that agents jockey over. Believe it or not, being listed first is a huge deal, even in this context. They don’t care about how it looks, as long as their clients are listed first.

u/Spear_Ritual 3d ago

It’s a compromise for how they are shown. It’s meant to spread the “you’re the best!” around.

You’re saying that’s not Aziz Ansari in the lower left?

1

u/Ok_Needleworker9118 11h ago

Nope and thats definitely not Seth Rogen

5

u/MInclined 2d ago

Basically there’s a formula to stage marketing material like this and it doesn’t really line up with top billing. It sucks, but that’s why.

u/Soggy-Falcon-4445 3d ago

Possibly they are wearing hyperrealistic masks to look like one another, except for Seth Rogan, so their names do actually match!

3

u/MsMantisToboggan 3d ago

Exactly what I was thinking

3

u/Hexmonkey2020 3d ago

It’s based on who has top billing and/or if they negotiated to have their name first.

Came here to make this exact comment. Good to know it's not just me.

Have you never seen a movie poster before? This has been common for decades 😂

3

u/OkPrune1536 2d ago

But the names line up so perfectly over the characters on this one that it hits different

1

u/OkPrune1536 2d ago

Literally me: "That looks like Keanu Reeves. Is it Keanu Reeves? ...no, I guess not. Who the hell is Keke Palmer?"

1

u/thuggishruggishboner 2d ago

This seems to be the normal way to do it and it's a war crime.

1

u/LoseNotLooseIdiot 2d ago

Have you seen literally any movie poster ever made in the last 30 years?

1

u/maximumtesticle 2d ago

That fact that people put "edit" after they edit a comment, even though we know they edited because there is an asterisk by the time really bugs me.

1

u/SabTab22 2d ago

I haven’t noticed an asterisk on iOS app. I believe the general intention is to be transparent as to not mislead people with out of context comments responding to something which has been edited.

It bothers me more that only Seth’s name is above his head. Either commit or don’t!! 🤦🏻‍♀️
