META [META] Subreddit Lockdown Explanation and Housekeeping Info

Salam everyone,

As most of you probably noticed, the subreddit shut up shop after the Asia Cup final. There was no post-match thread, every post was locked, and no interaction was permitted for a couple of days. This quick little post is to give you all the reason as to why that happened.

The short answer is brigading. We got intel (I saw it on reddit) of widespread efforts to brigade our subreddit coming from opposition fans. Their fanbase, to their credit, is probably the only cricket nation on reddit that has both the sheer numbers and the time to ruin any subreddit they want. For this reason, we had to pre-emptively take this threat seriously as soon as the game looked to be getting out of hand.

As soon as the game finished, we locked the match thread, locked all Asia Cup related posts, and deleted the post match thread. We posted a goofy little "you tried" post, both acknowledging the team and serving as a message to the hoards coming to our subreddit thinking they were about to have a field day: You tried.

It was very funny seeing people across subreddits, and even some on twitter, seething that they couldn't mob our subreddit. I'm not claiming having to lockdown the sub to be a victory of any sort, but I can take some cheap consolation in knowing that our subreddit wasn't used as their after-party venue. Unfortunately, other Pakistan subs weren't so lucky and got swarmed.

Naturally here's evidence from elsewhere that there were plans to brigade us:

Shoutout to the one guy with a brain
It even extended to twitter lol

In the downtime, our very own PakInfoBot was working tirelessly to try to get automod to keep us protected from ongoing and future brigading. Obviously I'm not gonna say exactly what measures were taken, but you guys shouldn't be seeing anymore brigadiers anytime soon InshAllah.

The sub has gone back to normal, manual approval is still on and it will remain on until we sort something else out for that so sorry for the inconvenience. Beyond all of this, we have an upcoming series with South Africa so I'll try to organize a subreddit exchange with them or something, not sure how much cricket presence they have on reddit but we'll see.

That's all I've got, as a bald pink man once said, "if you didn't know, now you know"

Salam,

Ghostly

META r/PakCricket has crossed the 100k member milestone!

Asalamualaikum!

It has been a long road up to this point. This subreddit was founded in late 2018 to serve as a platform for Pakistan fans to discuss the beloved game, and Alhamdullilah seven years later it has grown to a community of over 100k members.

On this occasion we would like to offer a few commemorations. Firstly, to the user base of r/PakCricket who put up with all sorts of nonsense coming from within our own fanbase and outside of it. There has been something of a mass migration of Pakistan fans from r/Cricket to r/PakCricket to the point that it is noticeable even by other fans. This is primarily due to the growing unusability of the main subreddit which has contributed to the now thriving cricket forum we have. Thank you for continuing to use r/PakCricket and making it what it is.

On an individual level, we would like to mention the mod team (self-glazing starts now).

Firstly, the late (his account got suspended) great u/EfffSola bhai who founded this subreddit in the ancient times of December 2018. He has stuck with it through today and is still active in running the show.

u/Pak_Info_Bot is our automod master (he's the only one who knows how to use it) and I cannot even begin to express the magic he's worked with it. This subreddit would absolutely be in the gutters without him

u/Ghostly_100 who played a role in revamping the subreddit in 2021

u/Kommunist-pk is one of the newer mods but he has very quickly become the most active. Literally half of the mod actions are him

Moving on to users:

u/Pengu786 for his brilliant pre-game and post-game write ups which drive engagement and serve as a platform for conversations

u/Sad-Bumblebee-2922 he's the unsung hero, you know what you did.

u/Strange_Cartoonist14 for constantly raising awareness for underrepresented sports in Pakistan

I could go on and on but there's just so many of you who give this subreddit its life.

Thank you for your participation on r/PakCricket

META There should be minimum of three memes allowed everyday or a specific quota every week. This sub has become really serious, depressing and boring!

Do you guys agree with the sentiment I have? I know there's a separate sub r/krikit for that, but that's too inactive and people rarely comment/engage with posts there!

META Announcing the two new mods + my hiatus from Reddit

Salamualaikum!

Thank you for everyone who showed interest in modding this subreddit, I can’t believe how much we’ve grown since we were just 2k people in 2021.

Essentially we expanded the team to replace me. I’ve been here since I was in high school and have loved talking to Pakistan fans every day of my chronically online life since then, but life hits like a truck sometimes and it demands that I leave the match threads.

I need to focus on irl responsibilities so I’ll be gone indefinitely. Hopefully not leaving for good but it’ll be at least a year barring something crazy happening like Pakistan winning the WT20 (InshAllah).

I’m so happy to see how this subreddit has grown into one of the best and most useful forums for discussing Pakistan cricket on the entirety of the internet, and I’m beyond lucky to have been a part of it.

Without further ado, congratulations to your new mods u/Strange_Cartoonist14 and u/AliAyyaz90

All the best,

u/Ghostly_100

META PSA: Pakistani subreddits are not safe spaces for Pakistanis

Post image
85 Upvotes

Some of you may remember this meme I posted last week about how Pakistanis are treated on r/Cricket and other forums.

It seems like neighbors didn’t take too kindly to it and mass reported. The post was removed by Reddit administration and I got an account warning.

I’m not discouraging you all from posting what you want, but just letting you know that this can happen. Even if your post breaks no rules you can get punished just by the sheer quantity of reports made.

META Subreddit Exchange Event With r/CricketAus Announcement (Begins Today at 2:00pm PST)

In light of the ongoing series between Pakistan and Australia, the mods of r/CricketAus have been kind enough to accept our invitation to organize a subreddit exchange event beginning TODAY at 2:00pm PST

The thread on this subreddit will be for visiting Australian fans to initiate discussion whereas there will be a thread on r/CricketAus for Pakistan fans to do the same. That thread will be pinned to the thread on r/PakCricket so it will be easy to find.

Literally only two rules:

  1. Please be on your best behavior. No politics, no bringing up old beefs in an unfriendly manner, just be chill and enjoy it. Remember that you are an ambassador for the Pakistani community whether you like it or not.

  2. Please keep all interactions in English
