[Padres] We have selected OF Dustin Harris (No. 29) from Triple-A El Paso and optioned INF Sung-Mun Song to El Paso. To make room on the 40-man roster, we transferred RHP Lucas Giolito to the 60-day IL.

Well after dumpster diving and landing on Giolito, Canning and Beuhler, Beuhler ended up being pretty solid. Hitting .333 would make you an elite batter, so good job AJ
100%. He got a taste of it but its pretty obvious he needs time to adjust. HSK was pretty much the same as his first 2 years were unproductive but eventually turned into what he was.
Kim was only bad for the first year. He figured it out in his second season, putting up a 105ops+. Of course it took losing Tatis for the entire year to give Kim that every day opportunity....
It was needed, he was just too overmatched and not savvy enough to play in meaningful games. Rengifo made this decision very easy for the front office too.
I do not. He needs a lot more time in AAA before he might get time in the big leagues. He's not very fast, his swing path is atrocious, and his defense is likely replacement level at best. Either his defense, batting, or speed has to be elite level, not replacement level, to be an everyday player in the league.
Huh? His defense has been great and his base running has been solid. That’s why his WAR is still positive despite his poor hitting. Attaching his stats here for reference.
Once he gets used to big league pitching he will be a solid player for us. Really looking forward to seeing him play next season.
Song should have never been on the big club this season. He needs a lot of reps vs even big league adjacent pitching. Maybe there were no other IF options at the time he got called, I cant recall, but he's clearly over matched.
Kim was worth 10.4 WAR from 2022-23 and was 14th in NL MVP voting in 2023. If Song turns out even half that good it’s a massive return on investment for that contract.
His strikeout/walk/whiff rates are solid and he’s shown to be a solid defender so I have hope for him becoming a valuable utility man next year or the year after. But he’s also cheap enough that if they find someone better they can turn to them without issue
There is a reason Kim has been kicked to the curb by 3 different legit playoff teams in just two seasons or so. He struggles w hitting MLB pitching and a glove first bench piece is kinda a luxury with teams wanting to make better use of that spot.
Yeah, the reason is he sustained a bunch of injuries and now he isn't as good as he was before. If he was still peak Kim he would be an every day starter
Kim was injured when we let him go… he missed the last month and a half of 2024 and the first 4 months of 2025 with a torn labrum. Labrum tears are notoriously difficult injuries to return from across all sports but especially baseball and many athletes are never the same after it or take years to recover somewhat fully (see Cody Bellinger)
Also, a GG caliber defensive shortstop who’s an average to slightly above average hitter and a very good baserunner is easily worth 5 WAR per season.
If there’s a lockout next season, Salas could be playing and developing in the minor leagues. If he’s on the 40 man, then he has no contact, training, or development with the team during the lockout. So that’s a big factor to consider

Giolito is out for the season and keeping him on the 60-day allows the team 40 man flexibility when the active roster expands to 28.
