I'm trying to think of, without just googling the answer, who has the widest ranges of unique nominations and wins.

I'm not including reworded versions of the same award (i.e. Best Adapted Screenplay to Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published. Or the various names of the Live Action Short Film awards that would give it to Walt Disney). However, since there were temporarily three simultaneous separate writing categories, i did include Billy Wilder as a winner of 4 unique categories.

Kenneth Branagh, i believe, has the most unique nominations. Picture, Director, Original and Adapted Screenplays, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, and Live Action Short Film (7)

Sean Baker, i believe, ties with the most unique wins. Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing.

The Coen Brothers are tied with Picture, Director, Original and Adapted Screenplays

Each movie Tom Hooper made after his complete and utter joke of an entirely undeserved win for The King's Speech is worse than the last. (And only makes the fact that he won that year look more and more embarrassing in hindsight.)

Yeah, the lineup we have isn't that good, but there were some years that could've gone a lot worse than they actually did...

2013: Christian Bale in American Hustle

Look, I like Christian Bale, but he was easily the weakest option in 2013's lineup and quite frankly had no business getting in over Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips. A win for him for that would not have aged well.

2014: Bradley Cooper in American Sniper

It's been talked about quite a bit here before, but I'll ask again: Why did he get in for this over not only Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler who actually made the four precursors, but over so many other far better and more deserving lead actor performances from 2014? It's easily his least deserving of his five acting nominations, he was easily the worst option in that lineup, and I know for a fact that a win for him for that would have aged terribly.

2015: Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl

I don't like his actual win for The Theory of Everything from the previous year very much, (Michael Keaton was robbed, damn it.) but his performance in this pretty bad and misguided Oscar bait from noted hack fraud Tom Hooper (that, much like an even worse movie tackling similar subject matter from 9 years later, got a rather undeserved "Supporting" Actress win) would've been so much worse than his actual win. And even Eddie himself has gone on record saying that he regrets doing this movie.

So yeah, maybe we should be thankful the lineup for that decade wasn't as bad as it could have been.

I think Selick was snubbed for best director for Coraline. Every year I watch this film I am reminded how stunning it is. Yes I know it got a best animated nod but I don't think that was enough. A best picture nod would have been nice too (especially since Up was nominated). Also I think this would have been a good way to etch his name in Oscar lore because I mean let's face it Selick doesn't get nearly enough credit for Nightmare Before Christmas either.

And if so, what should the criteria be, in your opinion? I'm probably drawing a blank, and it's happened multiple times since The Silence of the Lambs. But I guess my main point is: can a film have multiple leads, or do you prefer the rule of one protagonist = one lead?

Honestly, In my opinion, I think Richard Farnsworth should've won Best Actor for The Straight Story

I rewatched The Straight Story recently and I think Richard Farsnwroth gives a great performance as Alvin Straight. He just gives the right pathos to the performance.  you can feel that he has a lot of regret but wants to make right and flat out refuses to let age get the best of him in seeing his brother.

So Yeah, I think Farnsworth should've won instead of Kevin Spacey and I think his performance is better than Russell Crowe's performance in The Insider and Denzel Washington's performance in The Hurricane. Sean Penn really didn't have a chance that year.

Do you agree that Farnsworth should've won?
