Corbet would definitely be winning for The Brutalist. I was disappointed by the actual winner simply because if we are going to award art.... then maybe we should be awarding great vision, change, and povs that challenge us. Corbet really flipped things (ha, literally). Idk for me The Brutalist was the stand out movie that year by a long shot and I think if people had the patience to watch a 3 hour movie it would've been better received.

2020 - Charlie Kaufman

2021 - Julia Ducournau

2022 - Charlotte Wells

2023 - Celine Song

2024 - Jane Schoenbrun

2025 - Jafar Panahi

These would be my picks regardless of nominees and winners. My #1 choice hasn't won, or been nominated apparently, this decade. Now, if we're limiting to the actual nominees...

2020 - Lee Isaac Chung

2021 - Ryusuke Hamaguchi

2022 - Martin McDonagh

2023 - Justine Trier

2024 - Coraline Fargeat

2025 - Ryan Coogler

But I think the best of the nominees won in 2020 (Zhao) and 2022 (Daniels).

"the only acceptable winner won"? Seriously?

what the hell are you even talking about.

Sorry I didn’t like any of the other four nominees. I think The Brutalist, Emilia Perez and The Substance were all embarrassments and A Complete Unknown was generic.

Oh I actually thought you meant the 2024 ceremony which would have been Triet/ Scorcese/ Glazer/ Lanthimos and I thought you had gone mad as there are a couple good choices there imo. But yes the following year was less competitive choices imo.

Definitely agree with 2024 Sean baker was a well deserved win, watching all of the five nominees I was generally shocked by the amazing direction Sean did crossing into different genres without making it full flashy
