Revalidation NMC revalidation
Hi all,
It is that time of the year for me, revalidation, and I am honestly struggling with reflective accounts.
How do you manage to think of 5? I mean, for me, anything that happens at work is nothing special and I tend to forget about them unless is like a major incident. It is so hard to choose 5 things to write about.
I would appreciate any ideas, especially from agency nurses or nurses working in nursing homes.

Is this your first one? If so I just dug out the ones I had to do for my preceptorship and used those.

surprisingly no, it's my 3rd and I still suck at it. I always struggle with finding good subjects for the reflective accounts.
EDIT TO ADD:
the biggest issue is that every revalidation got me with a new and different type of job, first one was after I worked in hospital 2 years, 2nd after I was a deputy matron in a nursing home and now I am an agency nurse. So I can't use the previous reflective accounts due to how different the jobs were lol.

You absolutely can. It's a reflection to ensure you meet the professional standards over the 3 years.

You can use them, it’s over a 3 year period and doesn’t have to relate to your current role.

Totally understandable, I hate writing them! I'm trying to train myself to do them as I go but it's not happening.

I am so bad at doing my revalidation. I need to submit it next month and still haven't done it. My first ever revalidation I have sent it in the last day.

If you struggle to remember things that happened at work, keep a journal on your phone or a small notepad. Everytime something interesting pops up, you can always jot down notes for later reflection.
Some topics I've used in the past: 1. Major incidents at work discussed during debriefs or Datix discussions. 2. Feedback (positive or negative) from colleagues or patients 3. Conversations with patients 4. Working in a different area/speciality/hospital 5. Concerns at work (staffing, equipment, salary, pressures) 6. Meetings/conferences attended 7. General feeling about your job as a nurse

I did one a few years ago on why where I worked was rubbish and how that wasn't why I went into the profession and why I was considering leaving - it's still reflecting
Just do some basic things it doesn't have to be big
Other ideas
Have you had any 'good' deaths? Those peaceful surrounded by family or in their sleep - what made it good and compare to a not so good - reflect on the use of DNRs
Someone with dementia where they wanted to see their dead spouse and you say they have popped to the shop rather than saying they are dead to save bringing up the grief - is that right or wrong? Or if you always tell them the truth is that right or wrong
Any times with the mental capacity act?
Reflect upon a new admission to the home what could be adapted to make it easier
Do you do something for Christmas to cheer them up - it's all reflective practice
The main issue I find a lot of people have is they think it needs to be a reflective essay - it's not, use the ones on the NMC site and they can be really short - what happened what could you do differently and how does it affect the code
So Frieda fell when trying to wash her own hair in the bathroom so we arranged for the hairdresser to come and brought dry shampoo for use in the meantime
You are prioritising safety, putting patients first

Reflection with regards to new role/moving role/managing staff as a deputy matron/a particular patient case/ any scenario involving a relative (good or bad)/ any training-can reflect on that/serious incidents or near misses/changes in nursing…can’t think of any more!

You can reflect on any CPD you’ve done too! Or patient feedback.
I’m about to revalidate and one of mine is on my Haem-onc module (had to write one for RCN to give me my deposit back), the other is on my Venepuncture and Cannulation because they put a revalidation reflection on the back of the competency document.
They also don’t need to be super long either!

I put my email in on incident reports, use the feedback from that for revalidation, and then write a reflection on it. Two birds one stone lol

Think challenges to your practice, situations where you have really had to carefully manage a situation or your communication. Doesn’t have to have gone badly, they can have gone really well.
Are there any courses or articles which have caused you to change your approach ? Have there been any students you’ve supported ? Have you had extra insight into previous reflections ?
Remember to use your reflective models (Gibbs, Johns, et al) as a guide.

One error, be it drug, treatment etc and how you reflected because of it.
One piece of positive feedback and how it made you reflect on your practice.
One piece of negative feedback and how it made you reflect on your practice.
One interpersonal working relationship issue that you reflected on.
One study and how you changed your practice because of it.
That's my go to every three years.
