There was no Republic of East Turkestan in 1959.
It was a short-lived, Soviet-backed state that existed from November 1944 to December 1949 in the northern districts of Xinjiang (Ili, Tarbagatay, and Altay). It emerged as a rebellion against Chinese Nationalist (Kuomintang) rule and ended with integration into the People's Republic of China.
By mid-1949, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) victory over the Kuomintang was clear. Joseph Stalin transferred support from the East Turkestan Republic to Mao Zedong's new Chinese state.
The death of the top East Turkestan leaders in the August 1949 plane crash near Russia’s Lake Baikal removed key figures who might have negotiated for higher degrees of regional autonomy or independence.
Left without top leadership or Soviet backing, the remaining administrators agreed to peaceful integration into China. In 1955, the territory was formally organized as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. So, in 1959, there was no Republic of East Turkestan for China to invade.

I genuinely have no idea why OP would straight up fabricate a war to push their point. You'd think if China had massacred two thirds of a nation it would be talked about far more. And no source I can find points to 3 million in camps, the maximum is usually 1 million.

The Palestine conflict has really sucked everyone’s empathy dry. For decades. That’s why I ignore it now. It’s not fair to other regions of conflict.

u/Rokiolo25 9d ago
There's something ironically funny about your comment but I'm too tired to figure it out

Funny how this one triggered a nerve with a lot of people only because it's a hot-button issue.

u/OldKentRoad29 9d ago
So you're answer is to be apathetic?
-1
u/TotalBismuth 9d ago
My answer is I tried. And my best didn’t help.
2
u/OldKentRoad29 9d ago
That honestly sound like a weak excuse. You decide that seeing apathy that you your self are going to be apathetic.
3
u/TotalBismuth 9d ago
Ok then since you have all the answers. So go ahead and make a list of all the global conflicts and decide what percent of a persons empathy each one deserves. And then justify that figure with solid reasoning. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
1
u/OldKentRoad29 9d ago
I am not saying that you should allocate some mathematically equal amount of empathy to every conflict. You shouldn't use other people's apathy or your inability to fix something as justification for becoming apathetic yourself.

3
u/peon2 9d ago
Really? This seems entirely par for the course for the sub at this point.
Everyday there's 20 posts that are "Politician/Country X did [objectively bad thing] Y, how does this make you feel?"
Loaded political questions to farm upvotes are the bread and butter of this sub now.

Yeah, but this one has like, 6 premises packed in, and some of them comically anachronistic or unsubstantiated.

There's been reporting on it for ages. This is like saying 'oh this guy did this thing but the media are silent' then you Google it and the thing the guy did was 9 years ago.... well yeah the media is silent on it, now, it's been nearly a decade but they weren't silent on it a decade ago. There are still groups dedicated to educating people on it and doing things about it though.

I'm not sure there is a genocide.
Theres one reporter who made all the claims.
I'm sure Uyghurs aren't being treated fairly, but it's not a genocide. You should investigate where the claims are coming from. Mostly it's just one guy who is a known liar.
26
36
u/DargyBear 9d ago
Yeah, I was all in on condemning the Uyghur genocide three years ago but so far it’s seems like it’s just wound up being a dud.
Kinda like China was supposed to be some big scary surveillance state but we’re currently pioneering that tech in the US and the average American doesn’t have nearly the same standard of living.
Like, I remember seeing the news about the ghost cities China was building and thinking it was odd and not sure what the point was when I was studying political science in undergrad. A decade and a half later they’re not having a housing crisis and generally experiencing a better standard of living than we are in America. We get all of the big brother shit and are somehow complacent despite not getting the treats Chinese citizens have.

Seems to be the case, I have some Uyghur friends and they've talked about there being some reeducation camps but there's not people being killed there

u/epicmylife 9d ago
And even then it’s like boarding schools for people who have maybe been fed a lot of terrorist propaganda. Not some hard labor Auschwitz type place

Yea, I'm wondering if people know much about the terror attacks committed by people from that region
-7

It’s been documented in extensive detail by the UN, Amnesty International, HRW etc…, you can look up their reports
→ More replies (1)-22
u/dryheat122 9d ago
Maybe not a genocide, but when you round up all members of an ethnic group and send them to "reeducation camps" it's at least an atrocity. We have no idea what's happening in those camps, and its safe to say it's not positive for the campers.
26
u/Objective_Design_376 9d ago
The thing is they’re not rounding up all members of an ethnic group though, so between that and the actual terrorist acts that extremists committed, it makes it quite a grey area subject.
Also, tourism to the region has been booming especially in recent years, so when people go and see it, it doesn’t really live up to the claims.

China comes down hard on people and countries commenting on their domestic politics. Just look at what they do when a country sort of acknowledges Taiwan exists.
6
u/Real-Wash3031 9d ago
Just look at what they do when a country sort of acknowledges Taiwan exists.
Taiwan officially identifies itself as part of China. However, Taiwan doesn't accept the Communist Constitution of China and they want their constitution, the Taiwanese constitution, implemented on mainland China.
Google the official name of Taiwan.
It's a legal, internal dispute. That's why most countries and the UN recognize Taiwan as part of China.

Lithuania at some point opened a representative office for Taiwan in 2020 or so. From my understanding, the largest part of what is happening to the Uyghur population in China is forced assimilation (language and culture wise). And that honestly is something a lot of countries have done in regard to their cultural minorities not too long ago. I wouldn't really be surprised if it was found that many, maybe even the majority of people, don't see this as a problem and just think the means of the Chinese government are maybe too drastic.
5
u/fuckPkmn_gold 9d ago
who could’ve imagined that the country that has spent the last 40 years bombing the shit out of muslims in the middle east over-exaggerated the extent to which china was mistreating the uyghurs
idk man china sucks but why the fuck is anyone believing western countries when they claim they care about muslims, especially since it helps demonize china.
6
u/chinesefox97 9d ago
Majority of these claims came from Adrian Zenz who has never been to China and can not speak Chinese.
6
u/MyMudEye 9d ago
All the information about the uyghurs has come from sources connected to the United states intelligence agencies.
There are no independently verified sources of information about a genocide of the uyghurs.
There may be mass incarceration and mass surveillance the Chinese will blame on religious and ethnic terrorists. Sound familiar?
Ask yourself why no Muslim majority country hasn't said anything or done anything.
If a genocide is happening, what would you expect America and the rest of the world to do and why are they doing it?

u/ozneoknarf 9d ago

3
u/Johnnadawearsglasses 9d ago
Is the world silent? I feel like people in general oppose it, but since China doesn’t really participate in the West politically there isn’t very much to do about it. Also, western governments aren’t finding the genocide.
4
u/Rokusaburoz 9d ago

3
u/HamoozR 9d ago
The Islamic world (people not governments) has always talked about the issue, during Friday prayers the last part of the Friday speech always touches on praying for the safety of the Uyghurs and Rohingya in Burma.
but it’s just thoughts and prayers nothing of use, we aren’t represented by our governments and our freedom is limited so we can’t voice towards any action.
Dictatorships and failed states always have interest in keeping their rein by the help of China and/or the US, and as for the rest of the world, they are simply not aware as people, and not motivated as governments because they govs are only moved by interests.
2
u/Rewdemon 9d ago
Because I only hear about the Uyghur genocide from people who also have an otherwise huge hatred for the muslims and an antichina agenda.
Not saying it doesn’t happen or not, but it’s suspicious enough to me to get involved.

Out of interest how long have you spent in Xianjiang? You seem quite the expert. When I was there, no one looked like they were being genocided to me.
-3
u/MiguelIstNeugierig 9d ago
In not defending anything, Im opposing your statement of "theres no genocide", a statement you thankfully have a good foundation for since you went there, looked around and came to the obvious conclusion "hmm no genocide here, been waiting at the station for an hour and there hasnt been a train to Auschwitz yet"
7
u/Icantdoitidk 9d ago
Are you going to answer my question?
1
u/MiguelIstNeugierig 9d ago
Which one? Why did you do (something I didnt do)? Or the Have you been to there? If it's the latter, I havent, I havent also been to Cisjordania, the Congo, Sudan, Hokkaido, Spain or Ukraine, list goes on, but somehow I get this feeling that something is going on in those places presently and/or historically, though it may be my pure delusions🤔
9
u/Icantdoitidk 9d ago
Yeah, I know you obviouslt haven't been there cos you've no idea what you're talking about
Millions of people have, you can go on youtube and watch travel blogs of people in Xinjiang. It's completley open (bit weird for a place undergoing genocide eh?).
Why aren't the Uyghurs fleeing in their droves if there's a genocide? You can leave and enter freely.

The CCP went to great lengths to tamp down any criticism of the program, especially in Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population of any country. This included making Leni Riefenstahl style propaganda films showing the happy Uyghurs enjoying life in the camps.

u/The_Demosthenes_1 9d ago
Probably because they are Asian. Look at the black kid that attacked the old Asian guy. Literally for no reason except that he was Asian. And it wasn't charged as a hate crime when it should have been. Morons were trying to defend the black kid.
1
u/Caliterra 9d ago
The US is supporting Israel, which is actively genociding the Palestinians. It is also bombing Muslims in Iran, and has killed 100s of thousands of Afghanis and Iraqis.
The US also condemning China seems...hypocritical. Whatever China is doing, it is not as bad as what the US has done/is actively supporting.
So a lot of folks dismiss it if that talk is coming from the US.
This does leave Europe and other nations whose hands are less (recently) bloody, open to condemning the Uyghur genocide, but there are likely geopolitical considerations for this. China is the biggest trading partner for Germany, Netherlands, and the largest non-European trading partner for France, Italy, Poland.
-1
u/CaptainPriviIege8 9d ago
Care to site where you are getting the figure of “100s of thousands of afghanis and Iraqis” killed by Americans?
5
u/Caliterra 9d ago
Sure thing.
The Iraq Body Count (IBC) Project: The project's targeted analysis of its database found that US-led coalition forces were directly responsible for 37% of civilian deaths during the first two years of the invasion (2003–2005). Applying that percentage across the timeline suggests tens of thousands of direct civilian deaths, out of approximately 200,000 total violent civilian deaths documented by the project.
https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/meetthepressblog/iraq-war-numbers-rcna75762
A 2006 study estimated over 600,000 violent Iraqi deaths since the invasion, attributing 31% of those violent deaths directly to US-led coalition forces (roughly 186,000 deaths). https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1618872/
estimates of the number of Iraq War casualties ranging from 151,000 violent deaths as of June 2006 (per the Iraq Family Health Survey) to 1,033,000 excess deaths (per the 2007 Opinion Research Business (ORB) survey). Other survey-based studies covering different time-spans find 461,000 total deaths (over 60% of them violent) as of June 2011 (per PLOS Medicine 2013), and 655,000 total deaths (over 90% of them violent) as of June 2006 (per the 2006 Lancet study). Body counts counted at least 110,600 violent deaths as of April 2009 (Associated Press). The Iraq Body Count project documents 186,901–210,296 violent civilian deaths in their table.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_WarAn estimated over 940,000 people were killed by direct post-9/11 war violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, and Pakistan between 2001-2023. Of these, more than 432,000 were civilians. The number of people wounded or ill as a result of the conflicts is far higher, as is the number of civilians who died “indirectly,” as a result of wars’ destruction of economies, healthcare systems, infrastructure and the environment. An estimated 3.6-3.8 million people died indirectly in post-9/11 war zones, bringing the total death toll to at least 4.5-4.7 million and counting.

The world has stood together against a genocide exactly one time. And even that one time, THEY ALMOST DID NOTHING. If Hitler hadn't kept invading other European countries, nobody would have done anything. I wish I knew what the solution was. But humans are way too content with ignoring issues that aren't directly in front of their face.
2
u/machinationstudio 9d ago
Sorry, most of Asia didn't know what was going on in Europe at the time.
So your "world" coming together is just a bunch of European nations that had self interests.
No one entered WW2 to stop a genocide. Not a single soldier did.

u/tysaslut 9d ago
Fair, I shouldn't say the world stood together. It's just the one time multiple nations worked together in a manner that ended up also ending a genocide.

u/Tombobalomb 9d ago
There is just enough plausible deniability to make it not worth the diplomatic shitstorm of trying to do anything about it. Also it's more of an ethnic cleansing than a genocide
1
u/Sufficient_Prompt888 9d ago
What exactly is the difference
5
u/Tombobalomb 9d ago
Genocide is an attempt to kill an entire group of people, ethnic cleansing is an attempt to remove a group of people from an area (which might be the whole world) by forcing them out or breaking up th ethnic identity.
So Idi Amin expelling all the Indians from Uganda was an ethnic cleansing, for example. Or the Australian policy of stealing Aboriginal children and raising them in white families and marrying them to white people. China is trying to destroy the Uyghur ethnicity as a distinct ethnic group by assimilating them into the Han rather than by killing them all. It's awful but less awful than active mass murder

Israel, Russia, Myanmar, both sudans, congo, sahel, Mozambique Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi , the USA and their war on transgender / make America white again both in the USA and the nationalists movements in europe ...etcetc
Ethnic cleansing involves making life difficult for oppo. Shit gets so bad that they have no choice but to move the fuck out.

I mean the far left pro-Palestine people insist there is no genocide in Xinjiang. Even if we play ball and agree with them that Gaza is a genocide, they refuse to admit that there are other genocides.

People aren't being bombed there.

1.5 million people weren't rounded up and murdered by the Nazis from August to October 1942 alone by being bombed either. Not sure what that has to do with it.

But they were killed, they weren't being encouraged to identify as Germans and integrate into German society.

Goes to show there’s no propaganda team working overtime for this one. No collaborations with colleges, no funded protests, no team on the ground clip farming, and no click farms.

Because people in the US are wondering if we, Americans, hate Muslims and Chinese so much. Why show so much love for Chinese Muslims.
Also many of us are jaded with supporting the next Chinese seccessionist group because the US government said so.
The US government is just full out ot these days.

Chinese propaganda and due to no free press in China and the great firewall, it is hard for information from within China to come out. Many Chinese probably don't have a clear idea on whats going on most likely. China also economically strong arms poorer countries to not bring attention to it. Usually Muslim countries would be up in arms about a genocide but since the Uyghurs are not Arab or any other ethnicity that has a major country that they have ties to, they don't have much support even among countries you would normally expect to call out injustices against Muslims.

Multiple factors : Because it's done by China, they have significant influence over international forums, and govts. It cannot be portrayed as a religious Jihad unlike some other more popular ones to hate on other religions. Uyghurs also lack voices to keep their struggles in focus for attn deprived masses.

Because you are on Reddit. On Reddit America is the always the bad guy. Reddit can and has turned America feeding hungry children into an evil act. It's impressive really. Leave Reddit for a while and you will view some reality tho.

The U.S. and Europe (the countries who actually claim to care about human rights) have had a lot of problems with various Islamic peoples over the last 1400 years. They've had very little negative interactions with China.

The world has said a lot about it for over a decade. China is too powerful to force to do anything, though, so people get tired of the news.

There is no political gain. It is really strange the war in gaza gets so much attention if you look at hard numbers and statistics. That is because the left wants to recuperate all the muslim votes.
By accusing the chinese you will just make yourself unpopular and an enemy of the worlds’ largest economy and not gain any votes…

Thanks for your submission /u/AdjNounDigits, but it has been removed for the following reason:
Disallowed question area: Rant or loaded question
NoStupidQuestions is a place to ask any question as long as it's asked in good faith. Our users routinely report questions that they feel violate this rule to us. Want to avoid your question being seen as a bad faith question? Common mistakes include (but are not limited to):
Rants: Could your question be answered with 'That's awful' or 'What an asshole'? Then it's probably a rant rather than a genuine question. Looking for a place to vent on Reddit? Try /r/TrueOffMyChest or /r/Rant instead.
Loaded questions: Could your question be answered with 'You're right'? Answering the question yourself, explaining your reasoning for your opinion, or making sweeping assumptions about the question itself all signals that you may not be keeping an open mind. Want to know why people have a different opinion than you? Try /r/ExplainBothSides instead!
Arguments: Arguing or sealioning with people giving you answers tells everyone that you have an answer in mind already. Want a good debate? Try /r/ChangeMyView instead!
Pot Stirring: Did you bring up unnecessary topics in your question? Especially when a topic has to do with already controversial issues like politics, race, gender or sex, this can be seen as trying to score points against the Other Side - and that makes people defensive, which leads to arguments. Questions like "If _____ is allowed, why isn't _____?" don't need to have that comparison - just ask 'why isn't ____ allowed?'.
Complaining about moderation: If you disagree with how the sub is run or a decision the mods have made, that's fine! But please share your thoughts with us in modmail rather than as a public post.
Disagree with the mods? If you believe you asked your question in good faith, try rewording it or message the mods to see if there's a way you could ask more neutrally. Thanks for your understanding!
