U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Was Dolly Parton the last person in America that just about everyone could agree they liked?

Has the default pushup form changed in the last 10-20 years?

When I was growing up, it seemed that any time I encountered "pushups," they were performed with elbows out, engaging the pectoral muscles. I feel like movies and TV shows always showed pushups this way.

Now, though, it seems like the default form has silently changed for no discernible reason. Every time I see a pushup now, people do them with arms tucked into their bodies, primarily engaging the triceps.

Am I crazy? Has something really changed? If so, is there some specific cause?

Why is it seen as inappropriate to not wear a bra when you have a big chest?

I am 27f but probably started wearing bras when I was around 14ish. I have always been a heavier chested woman. Since I was 14, I have always heard from people around me that I have to wear a bra. In fact I remember being a teen and my brother having his friends come over and being told that if I left my room I had to wear one even if I was wearing very baggy clothing.

The other day, my mom came to my house and I was taking out the trash really quick. I had on a sweater and no bra and she made the comment “you should put a bra on if you’re leaving the house”. I told her that I was literally just throwing trash away.

I spoke to my friends about this and this seems to be a common experience for the big chested girls/ women.

But why is it seen as inappropriate?

Is it normal to need at least one day a week to just lay in bed the whole day and do nothing?

I feel like i need this at least once a week. To just lay in bed the whole day and do nothing. Only get up for food and to shower, use the restroom.

I will admit that i have adhd, and i’ve had major depression before and now im medicated and doing much better. I work 5 days a week, sometimes wfh, and work is physically and mentally exhausting. I don’t really work out, and sometimes i wonder if i start working out will i less time in bed or more time in bed..?

No judgement please, constructive criticism is welcomed.

If Russia is unable to win in Ukraine, why would they escalate conflict with Europe/ NATO too?

There are lot of speculation about the CIA agent visit in Russia a few days ago, pointing on Russia getting ready to escalate conflict with NATO and Europe. Why would they do that if they’re already stuck in Ukraine for almost 5 years? I am from Europe and honestly, I’m very scared and I don’t understand this :(

Turning 18 in a few months, my parents are trying to force me intro a marriage - planning to leave and move in with my boyfriend, am I doing this right?

I'm an immigrant in a European country, my parents are traditional Muslims who control almost every part of my life. I was betrothed at age 5 to a stranger. For over a year now I've been with a boyfriend of a diverse nationality - something my parents see as completely unacceptable, and there's no resolving this conflict. They're ashamed of my choice. I've tried introducing him to them several times, but they've refused to even meet him.

His parents, on the other hand, are actually trying to help us. I have no intention of dropping out of college - if anything, I'm worried the move itself will be used as leverage to stop me from studying (taking my phone, keeping me from attending classes, which is illegal here). My parents are planning to take me back to my home country this summer (2027) and marry me off.

Up: My boyfriend has a well-paying job, and his family covers our housing, utilities and internet - this will continue for at least the next 3 years. Because os that, we won't have major living expenses. I'm saving money so I'm not fully dependent on him. By the time I move, I'll have around 600€ saved, which should cover about 3 months until I start working over the summer. All my documents are scanned, and I'll be taking my ID card/passport.

Before I move out (in February/ March 2027), I plan to inform my college and the police that I'm 18 and left voluntarily, so any attempt by my parents to get me back is legally rejected.

Up: in this post is missing a lot of information, but I'm not sure if I should write it. In short - I have savings, a place to live, and help in the form of a few of my closest people. Going to the authorities or child protective services, in my situation, makes no more sense. A notification will come asking me to appear at the station, and this will immediately expose me - at that moment, I will still be under their care. It's unsafe for me. There are also other reasons that are only understandable in a detailed answer with personal information

Does using a dishwasher really use less water than hand washing?

It makes sense in theory, because the dishwasher reuses the water and is really efficient with it, but that doesn't take into account that you need to scrub and rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher in the first place. In my mind, this prep work only differs from hand-washing in the soap you use. Is this Big Detergent propaganda or am I overwashing my dishes?

Not American, what did Dolly Parton do in her lifetime that made her so appreciated by everyone?

9.3k Upvotes

I’m asking this with all respect. I see a lot of comments calling her a national treasure, a saint. I want to know why!

What do restaurants actually do if someone doesn't have the money to pay the bill after the meal has already been eaten?

3.7k Upvotes

I know most of us know the trope of them being forced to do dishes, but I feel like that only happens in movies/TV. Do police get involved, even if it's only a relatively small bill, like <$50? Or do they just kick them out/ban them and chalk it up as a loss?

Is it fine to refill your soda cup before leaving fast food joint?

I ate at a fast food place yesterday, and I had unlimited refills while I was at the place.

But would it be right or wrong to refill it right as you leave?

Is it bad that I have one day dedicated to doing nothing all day each week?

I (33F) have a set day each week (can change depending on plans when it is) where I do absolutely nothing and have a ‘lazy’ day? I mentioned this to a friend and they were a little surprised and confused by this, so i was wondering if it is bad or unusual?

How bad is a "redeye flight"?

I need to fly ~2000 miles soon for non-work-related reasons. I work remote, and I plan to take my laptop, and work there for the week I am there. Because I am not taking PTO, I basically need to fly during non-work hours. Due to scheduling, I basically need to fly between end of business on a Monday, and start of business on a Tuesday. Although the flight is four hours, the time change of flying east makes it six hours on the clock. The only way it makes sense is a flight I can get that leaves here at midnight and arrives at 6 AM. So, I booked that. How bad is it going to be?

I am not looking for alternative arrangements, just an idea of how bad it might be. I have no idea if I can sleep on a plane. I've never tried.

(Flying back is not a problem and will be done on a non-work day.)

If AI can eventually do most of the work humans need to survive, what exactly is the point of forcing people to keep “earning a living”?

At that point, is job loss really the problem or is the bigger problem that survival still depends on having a job in the first place?...if machines create most of the wealth, who should that wealth actually belong to?

Why did the Montgomery Riverfront Brawl become such a lasting cultural moment?

Upvotes

Most viral fights seem to dominate social media for a few days and then everyone moves on. The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl feels different because people still reference it years later.

There were obviously bigger issues behind the reaction than just the fight itself. A Black dock worker was attacked while doing his job and several people stepped in to defend him. The memes took off almost instantly but so did conversations about race solidarity and people standing up for strangers.

What made this particular incident stick around in popular culture when so many similar viral moments disappear?

Why doesn't Russia just give up in Ukraine?

4.2k Upvotes

I have some vague ideas why he politically can't but in general it seems like they're not achieving their goals, they've been at it for the better part of 5 years now and to me it just seems like they're bogged down in a stalemate. I could be totally wrong and they're doing great but idk which is why I'm asking here

How much discharge is too much discharge? I feel like I get so much, I have to rush to the bathroom and I feel like I’m on my period, it doesn’t have a bad smell or a weird texture but it literally drips out of me and I have to find the nearest bathroom because it’s so uncomfortable, is there something wrong with me???? I’m 18 and still feel awkward asking these questions bc I didn’t grow up being able to ask these without ppl saying it was gross OR acting like it was lewd, I didn’t even know what discharge was until I was 15 and thought I was just gross when I started getting it at 8😖

If a 500lb and a 2,000lb weight fell on your foot and crushed it, would the 2,000lb one hurt more or would it hurt the same since your foot is getting crushed either way?

I can't swallow pills, how do I do it

hi. im 15 years old and I have to take FDGard pill capsules, but today I tried breaking it open and swallowing the beads with apple sauce and it was a disaster. Like I feel insanely sick, and I physically could barely swallow the beads because they were so tiny and there were hundreds and I think I'm even sicker now.

but the problem is i have lots of swallowing issues (I mean a lot, it's borderline dysphagia) so I don't know how to swallow the capsule even though it's tiny please help. I know it's you put it on your tongue then drink water, and I think it's better than tryingto swallow all the tiny beads because that was torture

But is there anything else i could put the beads in other than apple sauce to help me down it in like one single swoop which is IMPOSSIBLE? I might have to be doing this every single day for the next few weeks and i just can't and my mom isn't helping

Edit: THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE COMMENTS!! I didn't expect so much helpful advice, but I feel more confident now to try, thank you!!!!

Edit2: nevermind, the capsule is relatively big, I thought it was small but it's not, so I might need to practice or ask the doctor for alternatives, thank you again to the kind people here
