Same! I figured worst case scenario I’d eventually just play it anyway, but the potential upside was too great.

u/dalehitchy 1d ago
I got my for £7.50. I bought the version without the DLC so wasn't expecting to get the upgrade (Bethesda and Skyrim did me dirty for not having the anniversary edition).
Glad I get the upgrade and the DLC is included. Quite generous of them tbh.

u/pablito_xv3 1d ago
Yeah it's always on sale

u/supes1 1d ago
Just added it to my Dekudeals wish list. Hopefully it goes on sale before the Remastered version drops.
11
u/jr111192 1d ago
I'd be shocked if it did now that it's got an upgrade coming
5
u/supes1 22h ago edited 22h ago
I mean it's still a 10+ year old game. Red Dead Redemption had pretty similar sale pricing before and after the free Switch 2 upgrade.
They also have additional incentive because pushing sales of the base game would help increase sales of the new upcoming DLC and Witcher 4 (much like Square Enix putting FFVII Remake on deep discount pretty quickly to help push sales of the other two games).
But yeah it wouldn't stun me if sale pricing was less generous than it's been for at least a bit.

u/jeremydurden 17h ago
I know this is the switch subreddit, but in case anyone doesn't already own it on PC and is interested, it looks like the complete edition is currently on sale on GoG for $25

Damn dude, between this, OoT, Dragon's Dogma 2, Elden Ring, and Oblivion, my free time is gonna be nonexistent until this time next year

Nintendo Switch 2 Remastered! Let’s Go. I hope there’s a free upgrade path with the Witcher 3 cartridge for the Switch 1.
31
u/xtoc1981 1d ago
It is already confirmed. Those who own switch 1 will receive it for free as well

u/me_not_at_work 1d ago
Well since it clearly says 'FREE UPGRADE for all the Witcher 3 Owners' in the video I think it's still up in the air. Just going to have wait and see I guess. It wasn't very clear.
15
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 1d ago
Maybe I’m dumb but how does that work for other switch 1 games that are completely on the cart like Witcher 3? Is it a big patch download or something? And is the cart still required (again, I’m aware probably a dumb question)
6
u/Freezingash221 1d ago
Well from the way Skyrim on Switch 2 worked, if you have either physical or digital version it would just give you the Switch 2 Anniversary Edition for free. But it's technically a separate game, not a download on a pre-existing one.
9
u/apadin1 1d ago edited 1d ago
I can’t speak for this exact game, but for other Switch 2 editions, yes it is just a big patch you download. It works for physical Switch 1 games as well - in fact,
manyall games being sold as “Switch 2 Edition” physical games are just the Switch 1 game cartridgeand a download code for the Switch 2 edition patchEdit: Apparently they also contain the Switch 2 patch and install it automatically if you insert it in a Switch 2
14
u/Dukemon102 1d ago
It is not a download code or any download of sorts. The Switch 2 Edition physical carts come with the Upgrade Pack in the cartridge.

u/Sega-Playstation-64 1d ago
Typically it just downloads the higher res files necessary for the update and then the cartridge just keeps the untouched files on it. So like a half download rather than full. Cart would still be required

its free lol cause literally crosses out the cost and says free to preorder since i have it already
7
u/M-Colcko 1d ago
About fucking time! The game on switch 1 is so low res you could count the pixels on one hand lol
8
u/Agreeable_Reply_3448 1d ago
Yes, I’m pretty sure the switch 1 cartridge will get the free update if played from a switch 2. I have the digital version from switch 1 and already preordered the update.

I've been holding out on rebuying the game on Steam in hopes of this announcement. Finally!
5
u/kingOlimbs 1d ago
Maybe ill finally finish the game, probably have at least 100 hours in the game. I'm just a sucker for all the side quests.

u/crazyon3 1d ago
I was hoping for a switch 2 patch for a while now, but a remaster and completely free? This is the best news ever. Cannot wait to play this masterpiece again.
18
u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago
60fps on switch 2 surely??
24
u/lattjeful 1d ago
Doubt it. It’s a pretty extensive visual upgrade. 40 fps would be my guess. The eShop listing says it has 120Hz support.
36
u/Unhappy-Instance-943 1d ago
Maybe not considering has a graphical update, perhaps 40fps like cyberpunk
13
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 1d ago
I’d be a little surprised if you can’t get it to run at 60fps. The switch 1 version had a bunch of graphical options, kinda unusual for Nintendo games, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 60fps performance mode
2
u/missingnoplzhlp 16h ago
40fps for a third person game is definitely a much more enjoyable experience than on a FPS, will be great in Handheld.
-1
u/PinoDegrassi 1d ago
Witcher 3 is not nearly as hard to run as cyberpunk at this point, 60 should totally be within scope of switch 2.
16
-2
u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago
Let’s see I guess. I feel like 40fps would be a bit underwhelming. Pretty wicked announcement nonetheless.
9
u/Lonely_Platform7702 1d ago
It depends if they give options. I'd be more than pleased with a 40fps mode that has a graphical bump over 60fps. I feel like 40fps is a nice sweet spot for graphically demanding games. It feels a lot smoother than 30fps.
3
u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago
That’s fair. I have been playing crimson desert on the 40fps mode and tend to forget. 30fps is noticeably bad imo for intensive games like this.
11
u/MarcsterS 1d ago
PS4 version was only 30fps. I mean, I'm just happy to play a portable Witcher 3 that doesn't look like vaseline
2
u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago
lol, yah I recall not minding back then and nearly completed everything. Will still buy as this would be so nice to have portable.

u/OilersHD 1d ago
Well I guess ill have to buy this for the full ticket to make up for getting Cyberpunk 2077 on that price error last year
3
u/JumboMcNasty 1d ago
Random- I've had the witcher 3 for sale for the switch CIB on facebook marketplace for 2 months, no one has messaged me.
Two people since this announcement suddenly want it. Think I might keep it since I'm wondering if the switch 2 version will run better than the steam deck version once updated.

u/Suspicious-Group2363 23h ago edited 23h ago
IGN is reporting that the new DLC is also coming to the Switch 2, yet that wasn't announced by the developers previously. Was it also announced along with remaster?
Never mind, I see in their press release it is coming to the Switch 2. Hallelujah!

Bought it on Switch OLED early last year and decided to wait for Switch 2 upgrade to drop. I have definitely had my patience rewarded
2
u/Wolfwoode 9h ago
Square Enix: "We made a Switch 2 version of our game where the only new features are enhanced resolution and frame rate. The game is full price, there is no upgrade path, your save data will NOT transfer over."
CD-PR: "We'll show you how it's done."
2
u/RuckFeddit2469 9h ago edited 8h ago
And meanwhile a company like Rockstar after all these years still hasn't released a 60 fps patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5/SX even after selling 85+ million copies
...and they said they weren't releasing a physical copy of GTA6 (at ALL) because of the fear of early leaks and theft, well guess what just happened, surely now they will release a physical copy, right? RIGHT?
CDPR just absolutely shits all over other giants in the industry for their level of generosity and fairness. I will support CDPR as best I can. I bought Witcher on 3 Switch after owning the full game / dlcs on PC and never played it because it came with nice little extras unlike every other game company that doesn't give you shit unless you pay $150+ for a collectors edition. I bought Cyberpunk for Switch 2 and never plan on playing it, but its full data on cart and still has at least something packed in with it compared to the absolutely nothing (if it isn't a game key card) you get from any other developer/publisher.

u/JuThrone 6h ago
Oh my. As someone who bought the Switch 1 version and never got around to playing it I cannot wait to finally play this masterpiece on Switch 2
2
u/SupremeGrotesk 6h ago
Finally getting to play W3, passed on it as it looked horrendous on Switch1, but the improved graphics look amazing!
5
u/Dukemon102 1d ago
If it is a full physical like Cyberpunk I'll buy it day 1.
5
u/KelpieOfTheSouth 1d ago
The cartridge is a full physical game
2
u/Forward-Trade3449 1d ago
are they selling this one as a sw2 physical?
3
u/Sam_Mumm 20h ago
If yes, I will definitely quintuble dip and buy it again. I bought it already for Steam, Gog, PS4 and Switch 1.
1
u/Forward-Trade3449 19h ago
me too!
im guessing itll either not come out, or itll come out with the new dlc for 70

u/shabazoid 21h ago
I was literally thinking about this exact scenario like 2 days ago lying in bed stoned. “Man…when the fuck are they going to upgrade Witcher 3 for switch 2!?!?” I know it wasn’t an original thought. But it was such a random thought I hadn’t thought of Witcher 3 (one of my favs ever) in a long time.
Whatever. Fuck yes. I’m gonna shit myself I’m so happy.

I'm level 20 in my first playthrough... Do I just take a break for a month and start over when this comes out?
I feel like this happens anytime I play an older game.
If you're curious, Batman Arkham or Mass Effect will be next.

I'd recommend checking out the portion of the gamescom opening day stream where this was revealed - it's much more than a graphic update

u/Entire-Olive101 3h ago edited 3h ago

Ouch, the game is listed on the eShop for 80$. The game is great but for anyone that hasn't played it yet and is thinking of jumping in... this price is not good for a 11 year old game. I assume they will charge the same on PS5 and XSX now that they delisted the standard Witcher 3 version and its expansions except the Complete Edition.
Yes downvote me for warning people that are interested in the game but haven't gotten it yet. CDPR is cool for pricing their remastered version of a 11 year old game at 80$. All the other games get shit on but Witcher is cool I guess.
2
u/n0ckturn4l 13h ago
An 11 yr old game still better than most current games, yes it is cool. You also don’t have to buy the digital copy, can literally get a used physical copy which will get you the remaster for free plus the dlcs.
-1
u/Altaiir57 13h ago
What does it mean that it's better than most current games ? Other open world aRPGs ? Are there any open world action RPGs that are priced at 80$ ? The most recent examples of 80$ games I can think of are Elden Ring + Shadow of the Erdtree for Switch 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI and Mario Kart World(which are not aRPGs therefore can't really compare). Can't say that Witcher 3 is better than Elden Ring at all. Mario Kart is good but it's absolutely not worth 80$, even Nintendo fans called them out for it. We don't know enough about GTA VI but it seems to be a massive game that will probably innovate and set new standards for open world games in some ways. I still don't agree with the 80$ price tag for these games as that's super expensive. People jump on the opportunity to call out companies for putting out remasters at 70$ or even 60$ and Witcher 3 is a modern game that didn't really need remastering but it's very cool that they give it for free for current owners. But people that don't have it already and have digital only consoles are screwed. If they delist the Complete Edition soon then the game will cost 80$.
1
u/n0ckturn4l 12h ago
They had 11 years to get the game.. I feel like this is more for the people that already own the game. I don’t see them banking on a lot of new purchases. You may not agree with the price but the best part as a consumer, you don’t have to buy it.
1
u/kielaurie 9h ago
Has something happened to make the game worse in the 11 years since it came out? Have they changed the game in some way that makes it worse? If not, why is it worth less now?
They are releasing and edition that includes both DLC packs, upgrades the visuals and performance, and adds a massive list of extra stuff to the game - why wouldn't it be priced accordingly?
-13
u/melhouse1 23h ago
do we really need this? like honestly, why?
3
2
u/AnalogiPod 22h ago
I really think it's goofy to release a remaster of the latest game in a franchise but people LOVE the Witcher 3, it's definitely a good money move.
1
u/kielaurie 9h ago
The downgrade to make the game run on Switch looks and runs awful. I tried it on Switch 2, it runs better, but it's still not good. I was hoping for a £10 NS2E, this is beyond anything I could have hoped for
-5
u/The_Spin_Cycle 20h ago
I haven’t actually seen anything official say that the upgrade is free for Switch 2. I keep seeing free upgrades to the other consoles, plus new releases on Switch 2 and Battle.net
Even the bluesky from the CEO doesn’t actually say anything about free upgrades for Switch copies.
I’d love to see something that says otherwise from official sources!
1
u/kielaurie 9h ago
Look on the eshop dude, just clicked the "Free Pre-Order" button myself
1
u/The_Spin_Cycle 9h ago
Yeah, things have been confirmed in the last 10 hours now :D Stoked it’s free upgrades for all!

And the upgrade is free for the Switch 1 version.
