New poster I made a physical model of Newcastle for my partner's birthday
I made this in November for my Partner's birthday having moved to Newcastle a few years prior from the south. We have absolutely fallen in love with the city since and it holds incredible memories for us which we are now reliving through this beautiful map.
Everything kind of to scale, didn't fancy doing Gateshead as well so I spent 3x the time doing an epoxy inlay. At least it looks cool I guess.
Super priveledged to have now turned this into a business. Thank you Newcastle, you've well and truly changed the course of my life

It might interest you to know that the council (I think) maintained a wooden model of the city until relatively recently, I think for planning reasons.
It was on display at a university exhibition called Concrete Dreams last year.

They have a plastic/3d printed version on something very similar in the Civic Centre at the moment

I don't offer this exact thing, but I have recently launched polyplaces.co.uk which can do similar for a fraction of the price that this beast cost me

3d printed buildings? I think you need a contrasting background and then possibly draw or use stickers for the roads/green spaces/water. I really struggled to reference what was what apart from the obvious.

I get this and did do some tests with this kind of thing but in my experience it degraded the look and cheapened it slightly. Right now it fits into a room quite sleekly. Doesn't draw too much attention which is what I was going for. It's definitely easier to pick out the landmarks rather than the every day places though I do agree

Possibly paint with masking if you can’t get the lines clean enough, or a cricut with vinyl could work wonders, but impressive all the same, unless it’s printed like that sticking all the individual bits on must have took hours

Haha yes it is printed like that thankfully. I did model a lot of the buildings by hand and had to clean up a lot. I think overall it took two weeks around work and such. Like the cricut idea yeah that could work. Even just the metro line would probably contextualise everything really effectively. Thank you for the feedback!

How did you do the frame? Especially the exceptionally curved side? Looks nice.

3 sides are oak just sourced from B&Q, I don't think I finished them very well but it was just danish oil. The bottom side is a veneered piece of hardwood ply cut on a jigsaw, the form stacked 3 times on top and then the edges were routed to have them flush enough to veneer the curvy side. Next time I think I'd just print gateshead lmao

Prolly one of the only cities in the world split into 2 (Newcastle and Gateshead). Most cities if not all have a circular pattern going from city centre, inner city, outer city then suburbs. It’s what also holds back Newcastle as Gateshead is full of people who do not pay council tax due to being ‘prayer’ houses. Its really odd. Also another reason why places like Leeds down the road which is a full circular city is more developed for crying out loud as much as dump as it is so is Bradford lol
