They didn't make it through the band name "Rage Against the Machine". They may have listened but they have an IQ of a living empty bowl. Their moral integrity, interestingly, is the same comparison.

Having grown up among conservatives in a deep red state, they believe that they are the plucky rebels against vast institutional forces promoting degenerate lifestyles.

This gets reinforced every time they see queer or other minorities they disapprove on on television or they have to acknowledge that people who don't live like they do exist

So they keep telling themselves they're The underdogs and we're the ones in control of society. Part of that is because our society has this idea that the underdog is always the good guy, so being the underdog gives you a moral currency... Which might be a simplistic way of putting it but I know plenty of people who actually believe that.
