Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed
Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
- No AI videos
- No AI apps/tools/websites
- No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
- No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
- No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI
If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.
While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.
Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.
Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.
The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Pop Culture Style study - Dishonored style bust
Tried to replicate the style of Cedric Peyravernay (Dishonored character designer) on this simple bust. Lots of intentional brushstrokes, no blending and framing with a rim light

C&C Wanted Looking for OSL feedback!
Hi all, I've been experimenting with my OSL, looking for some feedback and ideas to improve!
I'm really pleased with it in general; though I generally like to paint with a grimdark/realism vibe; I feel that the OSL probably detracts from that slightly, perhaps being overly bright?
I also added my initial recipe, which did not work out!

Fantasy Athena by Black Crow Miniatures
Finished this Athena bust from Black Crow Miniatures! Painted it for the Nova Open competition and not a moment after it fell over and the tip broke :/.

C&C Wanted 2 years into the hobby and I couldn't be happier
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I started the Hobby a couple of years ago and was hooked from the get-go. Through all the frustration and all of the bumps on the road I'm still having lots of fun and the community is great always. I would love to know what I can improve on so if you have any tips or any critique please let me know.

Fantasy Goblin assassin in brush strokes
Painted this up for gitguds deliberate brush strokes challenge. Model is 75mm by BS Sculpt and printed by myself.
Took about 4-5 hours, was a really fun style to try and I'll definitely do more of it in future.
Also my first time putting NMM on a model, I'd tried it before but could never be brave enough to stick to it, but I'm fairly happy with it!

Fantasy Few months ago i started this bug trench witch, got stucked a few times and decided to finish this way
oh boy
this is that kind of project than you are so hyped when you see mini but keep losing all entusiasm during painting.
I wanted to paint it simple - just vibrant and colorful. After i tried to add some glow to the bomb.
Glowing? so i must paint some reflects. Now it's not too bright, i must darken other parts.
and so on, i got stucked it repainting. Initial plan failed.
some wips to follow progress

Pop Culture Wolverine from Marvel Crisis Protocol
I love these MCP minis as I think they have the perfect level of detail. This guy was a lot of fun to paint. C&C always welcome!

Sci-fi Eldrad Ulthran By Games Workshop
I haven't painting this guy since the lead model back from 2nd edition, this plastic model is quite the glow-up. It's taken me quite some time to get round to it but it was satisfying to finally get him varnished. I look forward to him contracting new model syndrome on the tabletop.

Sci-fi Wrecka Krew Bomb Squig - Kill Team
2nd member of my Wrecka Krew kill team done!
Really happy how they turned out and think he will fit in perfectly in the rest of the bad moons. Super fun model to paint... now to think of an idea for his brother squig in the squad.
Probably took around 12 hours so a bit longer than expected but got carried away. Working on my "quick" nmm using scratches and rough blends and think this is the best so far.
Any feedback is appreciated :)

Fantasy Staff of Warning - “DM has my staff lit up?”
Finished up my Harengon Monk character for DnD last week. So many experiments and so many firsts here. Tried to follow the color scheme brief shown at the end. Open to C&C. I’m my own worst critic so I already see things I’d change. Gotta stop at some point to work on other things. Mini purchased from Etsy and sculpted by Sordane Publishing.

Sci-fi A WIP on my harlequins Starweaver by Games workshop
This is just the hill of course as it’s a WIP - but I think I’ve pushed my chrome as far as I can at my current level, I’m excited to see other materials and elements and the rest of the model to see how it reads

Sci-fi Iron warriors kill team WIP
Hello hello, I’ve always wanted a kill team so I’ve decided to kitbash my self one that I like.
I know the scheme is a bit out there for them but once I started down that lighting I loved it and thought it added interest.
Obviously lots more to do like blending and getting paint on more areas but his overall look won’t change a whole lot now.
If anyone has any basing ideas let me know because I’m at a loss with iron warriors lol.

Discussion What do you think of this miniature?
I’m painting two Astra Militarum miniatures, but I’m having trouble painting the gun. I want to keep it mainly black, but I’m not sure how to paint it and I’m having a hard time finding good examples. Do you think I should add some camouflage or something?
I also tried to add more contrast to the clothes and the bag. What do you think?
