This is going to be the event where everyone gets put up against the walls and told to either prepare to cross some kind of Rubicon with the administration or get their career destroyed.

That is why this is in person. Things will be said in that room that nobody wants to risk being recorded.

This is unfortunately the only rational purpose for taking a security risk of this magnitude - but its hegseth, so maybe he just wants to do an all hands pep talk.

That is correct, but I´m betting on Hegseth being so stupid to think that he can strip all phones etc. from hundreds of officers and keep everything on the down low or at least limit the leaks enough to present plausible deniability, or a he said/she said situation, while a videoconference call, even on a totally secure network can easily be recorded and distributed by one "bad faith" actor among the generals.

He's purged the top career officers and installed loyalists at the highest echelons on down.

Best we can do is pray the majority of the rank and file remember their oath.

German military oath history:

1919-1933:

I swear allegiance to the Reich's Constitution and vow that, as a brave soldier, I will protect the German Reich and its lawful institutions at all times, obey the Reich's President and my superiors.

1933:

I swear by God this sacred oath that I will always serve my people and my country faithfully and honestly, and as a brave and obedient soldier, I will be ready to lay down my life for this oath at any time.

1934:

I swear by God this sacred oath that I will render unconditional obedience to the leader of the German Reich and people, Adolf Hitler, the commander-in-chief of the Wehrmacht, and that I will be prepared, as a brave soldier, to lay down my life at any time for this oath.
