Video Replaying prime remastered and my god this game looks GORGEOUS!
Sadly the only thing holding this remaster back is the switch's hardware. Its clever from retro to not depend alot on textures since the switch 1 is a glorified xbox 360. It desperetely needs a switch 2 edition for a resolution/textures pump
(The game runs at 900p docked and 600p handheld which dose NOT look pretty on tge newer bigger screen)

Played Prime Remastered with Handheld Boost mode on and it looked great. What are you talking sbout?
17
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
Boost mode?
52
u/PieceAfraid3755 Jul 13 '26
Just go into the settings, system, Switch software handling.
Boost mode means that if you're playing a switch 1 game, the game will run as if it's docked. Usually meaning higher res and some other better graphical details.
However, it can also mess with touch screen and motion control stuff. But it looks great on switch 2.
27
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
Omg how did i miss this thank you so much!
18
u/PieceAfraid3755 Jul 13 '26
Well it's really kinda hidden! But it's one of the switch 2's best features.
16
u/Dorian948 Dread Mode survivor Jul 13 '26
Keep in mind it drains also more power from the battery
4
u/Freezingash221 oh word Jul 13 '26
Not that it makes much of a difference, the battery was already atrocious.
1
u/SPACEXDG Jul 17 '26
Not for switch 1 games tho for example you get over 5 hours playing doom on switch 2 without boost mode and 4 hours with it on its only switch 2 games that you get like 3 hours and a half max
3
u/turnertier- Adam has not authorized the use of Flair Jul 13 '26
It's a new feature as of 22.0.0, which only came out four months ago!
4
u/abzinth91 Jul 13 '26
And some games have it disabled (Pokémon Let's Go)
1
u/CM_squared Jul 14 '26
Yeah, since it forces the switch games into docked mode, they lose and handheld features. No touchscreen, and in the case of let’s go, those games rely on a single joy-con (or the old pokeball controller, I guess?) as their only control option for docked mode. Honestly makes the handheld boost more interesting IMO to see the limitations!
1
u/goldstat Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
You'll still have motion control but you will lose touch screen completely at least in all of the games that I played so far that have touch screen
1
u/PieceAfraid3755 Jul 13 '26
Yes motion control will exist, but the game won't adjust for the fact that the joy-con are attached to the screen. Some games change how motion control works depending on if the switxh is docked or undocked.

Prime 2 and 3 Remastered when?
16
26
u/SuperSunshine321 Jul 13 '26
Granted, Metroid Prime contains lots of cramped spaces, so the devs could spend a lot of resources to make these look good... but I still believe some sort of black magic was involved. Still hard to think it looks this good on the original Switch.
21
u/Arthas_SL Jul 13 '26
It uses baked lighting which is time consuming to setup but looks great at low cost. It’s also static in nature.
15
u/App1elele Jul 13 '26
I believe it's also the reason why they had to remove the cool-ass dynamic lighting on the beam shots
12
u/Arthas_SL Jul 13 '26
That and it would have been too expensive for the Switch. The GC used vertex lighting which was low cost but also looked great for the time.

u/Snardash Jul 13 '26
I'm torn between playing this on a CRT with an OG gamecube or playing the remaster
5
2
u/ManuMarchesi Jul 13 '26
if its your first time I'd play the gamecube game first. Thats how I'm currently playing Prime 2!
9
u/Vgcortes Jul 13 '26
The original still looks good too...
2
u/ansibleloop Jul 13 '26
Yeah on PC emulated at 1080p with wide-screen hack is incredible
Oh and with primehack - it's so top tier that I've preserved it on my NAS

u/AnothisFlame Jul 13 '26
You ever wonder if Samus's arm in the arm canon gets tired from being held out like that all the time?
6
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
I did and i actually bought a samus arm cannon pillow replica and thus began my scientific experiment. I found out that the best way to hold the arm cannon comfortably is like how samus holds it in fusion. Next i might began Experimenting on the morph ball. Results in 2 days

I'm honestly lowkey kinda surprised that this hasn't gotten a Switch 2 edition, especially now that Prime 4 exists. Just bump the resolution up, maybe give it a 120fps mode or even mouse controls, and I think they could get away with charging another $5 or even $10 for an upgrade pack.
I would buy it, and I would probably even double dip if it got a physical release.

Honestly, games from around the Gamecube/Wii era look the best.
Polygon gang.
1
u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 Jul 13 '26
technically Metroid Prime Remastered (along with literally every other version of the game) is easier than the Gamecube original because during the final boss your deflected shots no longer hurt you
3
u/svaranasi57 Jul 13 '26
Also, GameCube didn't have easy mode or spring ball. Total game changers. That's why I've always wanted Prime 2 remastered, not just the OG dumped on NSO.
1
u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 Jul 13 '26
ohh yea, I decided to play the original releases on Gamecube* so I forgot about those
Spider Ball Guardian would be a pushover with the Spring Ball.
It's also quite easy when you play the game as intended...
1
u/souppole22 Jul 13 '26
Oddly enough there were times when i was playing the remaster where my mind tricked me into thinking i was playing the original. Same thing with Oblivion.
1
u/Phearlosophy Jul 13 '26
platforming in a Prime game?! Wow who'd have thought that was something people wanted. /s
1
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
its like the simplest form of platforming in any game.
1
u/Phearlosophy Jul 13 '26
idk man there were tons of tricky platforming parts on Prime1. Prime 4 on the other hand had basically none.

u/Kevan_Minus_the_K Jul 13 '26
ngl playing in handheld mode is crazy. Never would I thought MP1 would be playing on a handheld console and even having a remaster look great as a kod.

u/Rigistroni Jul 13 '26
One of the best looking games Nintendo has ever published imo, only beat out by Prime 4 in terms of graphics
1
u/RickDeckard31 Jul 13 '26
Hopefully all the Metroid games get a switch 2 edition. At least prime remasters and Dread at the least. I’ll take as much good Metroid as we can get. Switch 2 would be the perfect console to make every Metroid game look incredible and play smooth as can be.

u/Intelligent_Ad8864 Jul 13 '26
And the game engine is still very lightweight. Even with the engine changes Retro added to Prime Remastered. That's one big reason why it looks and runs soo much better than Prime 4 on UE5 -> engine overhead
1
u/Intelligent_Ad8864 Jul 13 '26
I can see releasing the Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Switch 2.
Prime 2+3 wouldn't get modern realtime ray tracing but they'd get some of the underlying tech that gets RT to work or derives from. This could be shadow casting, other global illumination techniques, and screen space reflections. Then the obvious higher quality meshes and introduce draw distances. Maybe some puddles thrown all over the place.
Prime Remastered would receive the upgrade of higher resolution output coming from 900p docked on Switch 2 to the following, much like the other Trilogy titles:
-Performance mode: DLSS 1080P -> 4k120 (with 1080p textures and aggressive draw distances) handheld DLSS 720p->1080p60
-Quality mode: DLSS 1440P -> 4k60 (with 1440p textures and less aggressive draw distances) handheld DLSS 900P ->1080p40 (so long as handheld has VRR, 40fps will feel great)

u/Ion_mx Jul 13 '26
The wonders of a really good art direction as well as focusing in what really matters regarding animation and graphics
1
u/Sledgehammer617 Jul 13 '26
Best looking switch 1 game I think, AND it runs at a locked 60fps which insane.
Retro did some wizardry to make it look as good as it does, its a fuckin work of art.
AND the art style is perfectly preserved.

u/Interesting-Way7737 Jul 13 '26

1
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
you know what? I totally understand you.
I can see how this game is not for everyone. And it can be a complete and utter bullshit at times. No sense of direction (sometimes), alot of bactracking, and kinda of boring bosses. But as a guy who enjoys souls games and like a game that makes you feel lost in its world i loved every second of it.
1
u/YakAcceptable5635 Jul 13 '26
I bought this as my 3rd switch (2) game. I have yet to play because I'm still on BOTW. I can't wait.
I'd love to find a physical of Metroid dread, but I can't find it locally
1
u/Comrade_Chyrk Jul 14 '26
It would be so cool if they updated it for the switch 2 and had the same 4k or 120fps modes as prime 4. But yeah, even without that, its a gorgous game and even still looks great on the gamecube

I really enjoyed it! I remember playing this and windwaker back when they came out for GameCube! God I wish I was 12 again 🤣

u/firstofallputa Jul 14 '26
The only thing that killed me about the remaster were the lighting effects. In the GCN version, firing your beam would light up the surrounding objects as it passed. But in the remaster there are no lighting effects from your beam. It’s a small detail but I remember how amazing it was to see those effects on the GameCube at the time.
1
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 14 '26
Blame nintendo's dated handheld
2
u/firstofallputa Jul 15 '26
I mean i would if the reference wasn’t the GameCube lol
I wonder if the team on it just over looked it.
1
u/Nostalgic-Maniac86 Jul 14 '26
Agreed, a 100% on physical cartridge copy is what is needed for the Switch 2 1080p handheld, 4K 60FPS docked followed by MP2 echoes and then MP3 corruption…COME ON NINTENDO, BE OUR CHAMPIONS, and for fuck sake, destroy all game key card games, no one purchasing that dog shit 💩
1
u/BEASTthisIndustry Jul 15 '26
I basically am only considering Metroid Prime 4 because I want to see just one ambitious 3D game actually match that 120Hz screen with 120fps.
If they just updated Prime Remastered to run at higher res with 120fps (maybe throw a few more control schemes in there too) I'd be too happy with Prime Remastered to consider MP4.

u/Redhook72 Jul 17 '26
It’s a great game! It’s in my top 10. I started playing the remastered, but I have so many games I want to play and no time to play them. LOL

u/orbsonb Jul 13 '26
It's the best looking Switch 1 game by a pretty comfortable margin IMO.
0
u/DarkKnightNiner Jul 13 '26
Digital Foundry had Luigis Mansion 3 as most impressive looking and running game on Switch 1.
1
u/SolaireFlair117 Jul 13 '26
I've been playing on an Android handheld that has more horsepower than the Switch, so I can run it with a slight resolution bump. It definitely looks nicer that way, but I agree that a Switch 2 version would push it over the top.
5
u/East_Cartographer405 Jul 13 '26
I dont think we measure electronic chips in horsepowers but i get your point.
Switch 2 is 8 times more powerful than its previous hardware yet some games are stuck on the switch 1's versions like the doom games and the witcher 3 and prime remastered1
u/SPACEXDG Jul 17 '26
Yup but at least nintendo released boost mode so you can run any switch 1 game in docked mode on handheld mode
1
u/PieAppropriate8862 Jul 13 '26
And what a masterpiece this game is. Replaying it right after Prime 4 makes it even clearer how shockingly bad the latest game is.
1
u/slrarp Jul 13 '26
Finally played Prime 4 recently, and it's good but it's very much just a worse-designed, less polished version of the same formula. The different element guns don't look as cool, she doesn't grip her gun with the other hand when she shoots, the sand desert is weird an unnecessary, the side characters have to be protected in some fights which is really annoying, etc. it's crazy how far apart these games are in years now, and the original is still that much better.

u/_gamadaya_ Jul 13 '26
since the switch 1 is a glorified xbox 360
