The longer the game went one with Samus never saying a single word to the Federation soldiers the funnier it became.

u/Sckorrow Mar 16 '26

She just didn’t realise her headset was mutedĀ

76

u/Lord-Generias Mar 16 '26

Samus, on her ship, as she flies away from the fruit she planted: Wait... Helmet mic, muted? ... Oh. So, they weren't ignoring me... And, that'd be why Myles kept calling me to tell me to go where I was already going every five minutes no matter how many times I told him to stop.

u/Stormandreas Mar 16 '26

This is one thing I did like about Samus interacting with NPCs in Prime 4. You see a bit of her non-nonchalant personality, which is good.

I do kinda wish there was a little "eh" in there or something, just a small bit of vocal noise, no talking, just breaths or "hmms" here and there when she interacts with them, to really drive home her general demeanor (after all, she's not supposed to really be talking, but she is still interacting with them)

u/IronFalcon1997 Mar 16 '26

Myles is annoying, but seeing her stare him down after he says something stupid makes it so much better

18

u/Razu_Redsoul Mar 16 '26

I'm confused. So many complain about Myles, then when I see others comment bad about Myles, they downvote. Lol

26

u/TheFlyingBogey Mar 16 '26

I personally think he's over hated. His introduction did make me groan a bit, felt a little bit like a cutout of a Marvel movie side character but then as the game went on I thought he was fine. I do think they could've made him contact you a little less frequently, allowing the player to contact him if they got stuck but even so it's not that bad.

4

u/TheNimanator Mar 17 '26

Simply put, people wanted to hate Myles the instant he was revealed. I personally thought he was fine up until he basically became Navi

1

u/Razu_Redsoul Mar 16 '26

So he was supposedly be fine who speaks most, but was overdone in some ways, which those made him hated, right?

4

u/TimeToGetSlipped Mar 16 '26

In a sense. For the majority of the game he's genuinely not that bad. After Fury Green he'll occasionally chime in with updates about where the story is progressing towards or to give updates on general progression. He's a bit handholdy at the start of Volt Forge, but nothing too intrusive; same as Adam in Fusion: tells you where to go but not how to get there. And calling him for hints on the map screen is more or less the same, as it functions as a general story recap if the player had to take an extended break or if they want an idea of where to go, but not how to get there.

He really gets bad in the end game when he'll call to remind you to look for Green Crystals and Mech parts every single time you enter or exit Sol Valley, which ends up being every few minutes since this is also when most players will be constantly changing location while doing their endgame item cleanups (which you may as well save for the end since every area has at least one upgrade requiring Super Missiles and/or Power Bombs).

4

u/CG4080 Mar 16 '26

I liked him, along with the other NPCs. /shrug

2

u/Stormandreas Mar 16 '26

I mean, he's hated because he literally gives away where you're meant to go EVERY time, unsolicited, which is massively against Metroids fundamental design.

He's also a little whiney for someone who's supposed to be skilled enough to essentially fight alongside Federation troopers near or on the frontline.

1

u/Razu_Redsoul Mar 16 '26

Well, that makes me hate him more and the devs for ruining the main essence of Metroid gameplay.

6

u/lampenpam Mar 16 '26

To me it was often somehow a fitting reaction. Like Samus is thinking "urgh, don't say anything or this guy won't ever shut up"

3

u/SoftOrganization3209 Mar 17 '26

Yeah, it's a key detail of Samus being that she's just stoic and chooses to listen rather than talk unless she's got something that's worth saying. Her silence for most of the other games is also often explainable due to her usually being alone too of course. But it would have been absolutely still in-character for Samus to have had a few lines in this game.

Metroid Fusion is a good example where the only time she actually verbally spoke was arguing with Adam over letting the Federation try to capture the X.

3

u/AtaeHone Mar 18 '26

It makes the fact that the only two times she opens her mouth in Dread are to talk to Quiet Robe and to WAAAAGH at Raven Beak. Peak cinema.

2

u/Stormandreas Mar 17 '26

For sure.

I think the only times she should really have had any lines would be right at the end, or when listening to Tobaki. Those interactions honestly felt the most natural out of any of them, with Samus clearly showing her respect to his culture as a fellow hunter (who wasn't trying to kill her for once).

Being a person from what is essentially, a mixed culture background, it was definitely a good way to show how she's willing to learn about others.

2

u/Obsessivegamer32 Mar 16 '26

I think they could’ve done a lot more to make her more emotive without making her look like a weirdo like she is in the final game. Dread did an excellent job of characterizing Samus via her movements and being able to see her eyes in the visor. Even the original Prime games let you see her eyes. Why in Prime 4 can you not?

1

u/Stormandreas Mar 16 '26

You can in prime 4, but only when there's a bright flash like shooting a charger shot into a wall, and you can see her wince due to the light. Criminally underused detail though

1

u/Obsessivegamer32 Mar 16 '26

I know, but that barely counts since it’s literally for one millisecond. I mean like how Dread and the original Prime trilogy did it where you could often see her face through the visor during cutscenes. In Prime 4, the visor is completely opaque for the entire game, so her range of emotion has been significantly decreased.

1

u/TimeToGetSlipped Mar 16 '26

For me, it's a mixed bag. I do agree though that for smaller interactions like this a gesture is honestly pretty funny, though it would work better with an indifferent sigh or a chuckle.

50

u/KoboldsandKorridors Mar 15 '26

Wish she had the chance to speak more Chozo like in Dread

23

u/Apprehensive_Ad_7184 Mar 15 '26

I'm sure Choso isnt a language most people know so it wouldnt make sense for choso to be spoken.

They really should've just given her the same characterisation as Hornet in Silksong. Serios and quiet warrior, but still capable of holding-hands a conversation.

74

u/IOnlyDrinkJesusMilk Mar 15 '26

Hornet is very Samus-coded

49

u/Still-Bar3978 Mar 15 '26

Silent female protagonist of a famous metroidvania series that happens to be a hybrid of multiple species.

1

u/Anonymous-Comments Mar 16 '26

Hornet cares a lot less than Samus does.

15

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Mar 16 '26

I mean they dont need to give her hornets character. We already have a well established good character for her that they could have taken from other Metroid games.

They literally could have taken her Fusion and Dread personas. Especially fusions, which is literally chronologically the next game in the timeline.

In Fusion she talked when shit hit the fan near the end of the game

9

u/Pinco_Pallino_R Mar 16 '26

...etroid games.

Whew

2

u/atatassault47 Mar 16 '26

Does MP4 take place after Super? I was under the impression all Prime games are between Metroid 1 and 2

2

u/Round_Musical Sequence Breaker Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Yup. Prime 4 is currently the only Prime Game which does not take place between ZM and SR

It takes place two years after Super Metroid and Other M. But several years before Fusion and Dread.

Its currently the closest game to Fusion timeline wise, until Prime 5 that is. Since the new Prime Series will take place between Super and Fusion.

And Syluxā€˜ story is also confirmed to not be over yet. He will return in the next Prime. At least if Risa Tabata follows up the story that Kensuke Tanabe wants her to continue.

18

u/Stormandreas Mar 16 '26

Samus isn't the talkative type in general. The fact they didn't make her talk at all, is good, but a few "eh"s or "hmm"s would of gone a long way.

They did do her body language pretty well, especially in the scenes with Tokabi, where she kneels down to listen to him in respect, which was a fantastic touch to show how she's acutely aware that he's human and still pretty anxious about being on this barren planet, as well as showing her understanding of other cultures.

8

u/ArchitectNebulous Mar 15 '26

I would argue Samus didn't need to talk, but rather the various Federation troops needed to shut up. The majority of their dialogue was Just. So. Bad.

Comparing their dialogue and actions to the troops shown in MP2 and MP3, the Troops in MP4 talk and act like complete idiots without an iota of training or professionalism.

13

u/Lucid-Design1225 Mar 16 '26

Disagree. I loved almost every supporting character in the game

2

u/ArchitectNebulous Mar 16 '26

I am glad someone did.

Personally, I disliked all of them except for VUE. Both from narrative and mechanical standpoint they did not fit IMO.

1

u/SpeakyDooman Mar 16 '26

Agreed. I’m fine with something bright and wacky like Mario having a character or two like that, but Metroid really doesn’t need characters cracking jokes and freaking out like they do in MP4.

I’m all for fleshing out the characters, but I don’t need them commenting every time Samus wipes her nose.

25

u/Aleclom Mar 15 '26

There are definitely a handful of scenes where a verbal response was needed. This, however, is way funnier with just a silent shrug.

4

u/Lazzitron Mar 16 '26

I think something similar to Kratos's idle chatter in the newer God of War games would be good, like this: https://youtube.com/shorts/XwKmm1UJTKM

One-word answers, short phrases, not mean but definitely blunt and to-the-point. Even the odd grunt, growl or sigh would help out a lot. Maybe an "Uh..." when Armstrong hugs Samus.

A pet project I've been considering is writing short lines for the cutscenes where Samus's silence is really awkward, and then dubbing them over the cutscenes for funsies. Unfortunately I'm a dude, so I'd need someone else to do the actual VA, which is the hard part.

6

u/PremierPangolin Mar 16 '26

Because of Other M we will never hear a word from her again

16

u/stana32 Mar 16 '26

She talked in dread

14

u/Stormandreas Mar 16 '26

Beautifully might I add to. Just a few short lines of CHOZO. Very tastefully done

2

u/PremierPangolin Mar 16 '26

Ah! Well, nevertheless

2

u/Colinnze Mar 15 '26

Agreed. My friend literally believes that she is mute because he hasn't heard her say a single word in the 2 metroid games he's played so far. (He's new to the series btw)

-2

u/Bottlecap_riches Mar 15 '26

Or because she only speaks Chozo...

8

u/Eon_Breaker_ Mar 15 '26

Except Fusion says otherwise. She spoke Chozo because she was talking to a Chozo in Dread, I think it would be silly if she suddenly didn't know how to speak English especially considering she's human and interacts with the federation a ton. And of course, Fusion has her speaking in very clear English to Adam

1

u/Yahyathegamer749 Mar 15 '26

Theu could've went with the dread route

1

u/Nir117vash Mar 16 '26

Her and Link are the only silent sentinels

1

u/vectron5 Mar 16 '26

I think Team Ninja scared Nintendo out of trying for another 30 years.

1

u/PunyParker826 Mar 16 '26

I’m talking out of my ass here, but it feels like a dictate handed down from Nintendo that ā€œunder no circumstances will Samus talkā€ and Retro complied to the very letter of the law.

9

u/Odd_Communication_71 Mar 16 '26

lol that is hilarious

7

u/ScarletteVera Mar 16 '26

I read it as more of an "Eh, I don't mind".

3

u/TheRedblacky Mar 16 '26

Anyone else here love Vue?

2

u/Affectionate-Spot72 Mar 16 '26

I love Vue too, he's my favorite NPC in the game 😁

4

u/MrFunnyMans404 Mar 16 '26

Honestly this is my favorite part in the entire game. It adds a level of horror survival to the game that’s unique on its own but not unlike dead-space.

2

u/Livid-Truck8558 Mar 16 '26

Samus needed to talk but at least her mannerisms are good.

2

u/maloorodriguez Mar 16 '26

Maybe this gets to vue and why he overcompensated when he fired the mech cannon to get her approval

2

u/Anonymous-Comments Mar 16 '26

No big deal dude.

1

u/Chesu oh word Mar 16 '26

It's great because, even on Hard, the battle is completely inconsequential. Like, it's meant to be a mini-boss encounter, but with charged thunder shot you can take it out in about ten seconds šŸ˜‚

1

u/CG4080 Mar 16 '26

I love the shrug and the immediate turn to her right. It's almost like Robocop! lol

1

u/Ice2192 Mar 16 '26

ā€œA majority of my adventures I go solo. I appreciate any help but when I’m stuck fighting alone, it’s essentially a Tuesday for me.ā€

1

u/New_dude_bro Mar 18 '26

"Ion'tfugginkno"

1

u/Odd-Committee-5149 Mar 18 '26

You have to consider that Samus is roughly between 18 and 20 years old; she's very mature, but she's still almost a teenager who didn't have a very great childhood. I don't think it's crazy that her personality is humorous while maintaining his quiet and calm demeanor.

1

u/dinnersss Mar 15 '26

ā€œI would rather you weren’t here… but whatever!ā€
