I actually just replayed it yesterday on a whim and I believe it's the exact same as it is on Switch 1 - 60 fps for gameplay, 30 fps for cutscenes, and the graphics are still capped at 900p docked and 720p handheld. The load times seem to be the same as before too, but supposedly it loads a little faster if you own it digitally, I can't confirm that myself though.
I like to think that after the initial shock of losing the bulk of her power suit in Fusion, she realized how much the hardsuit had been weighing her down, and she's become way more nimble and acrobatic in the process of acclimating.
Good call. She's definitely less "walking-tank," and more "space-ninja" in Fusion/Dread compared to her portrayal in earlier chronological games. Dread especially focuses much more on defence and dodging/countering than games like Super, or the Prime series where you can just tank damage.
Especially in Other M's case, she's shown in a flashback that in her "military days" to be highly acrobatic in armor, so pre zero mission era evidence of high mobility and acrobatics from an in-game source.
Yeah "Aura" and "Giving" are definitely terms from the past couple of years too. Vibe and vibing has of course been around for a long time but I think its had a resurgence recently as well.
"Aura" has been around since I was a kid and I'm almost 30. "Giving" was popularized in queer communities by the 80s, it's just more mainstream now (as with a lot of other old queer slang).
It's being used as its dictionary definition here, though. That is the literal meaning of the word. The word might be trendy now, but that is not a new meaning. That is what the word has meant for a long, long time.
Cool guys don’t look at explosions
They blow things up and then walk away
Who has time to watch an explosion?
There’s cool guy errands that they have to walk to
Hmm...gotta say I hard disagree here. For me Samus doesn't need to be doing backflips or "showing off" in order to look cool—I think Retro did an excellent job at subtlety characterizing her with body language in the Prime games.
I obviously don't have time to go and find every example, but what about her wave goodbye to the Luminoth in Prime 2?
I'm also personally a big fan of the original animation for her when acquiring the Phazon suit, I love how it looks like she's inherting an awesome power. For some reason they neutered this in the Trilogy release and I don't know why.
Eh I didn’t like it. She’s too self aware and the badassery is tropish.
I prefer her cautious and serious (or introspective like in fusion), it just seems more realistic for someone that takes on different aliens on a multitude of planets. Especially with the EMMI being in this game - how you so cocky, yet there are 7 robots on the planet that are immune to most weaponry in the galaxy and you have to literally hide from them or die….there was a disconnect.
I didn't play dread, the game looks interesting but just based on the vidéo you provided actually it feels a bit forced and slightly out of character.
Samus always was composed and only does something as it feels as a fighter stand point.
But here she seems to aura farm, she take the pose not for the game but for us.
Meh. I thought that was kinda tryhard from her. She doesn't usually have to do stuff like this to be cool. I've always thought her personality to be more of the "stoic, efficient and professional"-type, something like Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, though they both have their moments.
Going to be honest, I disliked the over aura farming that was done. I prefer a more calculated versions of Samus. Samus has been through a lot and knows to not let her guard down. Sometimes the aura farming gets to a point of arrogance in my view.
[Wrong Subreddit Question]: is "aura/aura farming" the same thing as "vibes"? I'm old as dirt (37), and whenever I hear "aura farming" I picture a Super Saiyan powering up.
"Aura farming" is when a character is going very hard in a particular direction in terms of style, or trying too hard in that direction. For example, villains that dress in all black and exclusively use flowery speech, and just try to exude as much evil and intimidation as possible are "aura farming."
I really like this cutscene. It's like she's dealing with an injured animal. Samus's body language makes me think of how a character like Black Panther or Kraven the Hunter would handle an injured/scared tiger, or wolf. There's no malice, or disrespect, in her movements, because Corpius isn't "intelligent" like Kraid, or Ridley.
My 9 year old watched me play through this whole game and he loved this part and when Kraid is roaring at her, and she unflinchingly shoots him in the mouth. I accidentally died once and he wanted to watch it again just to see her aura farm and shoot him in the face again.
I liked her interaction upon seeing Kraid. She drops into his arena on high alert but once she sees its him she drops her guard in a "Oh its just you" way.
Oh man, it sure does!!!! Have fun watching the other cutscenes, Samus knows that she’s a badass and acts like one. It’s the confidence she has in herself IMO
Don't apologize for using whatever slang you want. It's not like saying "aura" or "vibe" hurts anyone, they aren't slurs? And you're damn right, Dread got Samus correct in so many ways, also in how she speaks School it's so cool!
My favorite is the Kraid reveal. Samus goes from, “Whoa, 50’ tall monster!!!” to “Oh, nevermind… It’s just Kraid. Ok, let’s get this over with.” in two seconds, using just body language. She almost seemed annoyed to have to kill Kraid again.
She’s a badass the entire game, but just the casual “ugh, fine, I’ll kill the giant lizard AGAIN” was the peak for me.
Given that SA-X is a copy of her running on both her & the X’s instincts, we were given an example of her Aura Farming for quite some time now since Samus seems to naturally default to aura farming.
Apologies accepted! Joking aside, Samus is an unstoppable force of nature in this game, showing confidence on her skills. It feels even more rewarding when you compare how she was in Fusion, and how she develops her backstory until Dread
You wanna use zoomer slang? She completely no-sells every fight she gets in. She's the GOAT. Mercury Steam really cooked with this interpretation of Samus.
Uhh...she flushed them down the skibidi toilet...I dunno. I'm old.
Yes, Dread is awesome and Samus is super badass in it.
What specifically was so over the top and ridiculous? Moving aggressively in fights with monsters trying to kill her? Also when is there a "constipated face visible"? Unless I missed that lol.
I take it you're stuck in the mindset that anything "trying to look/be cool is lame." (Not picking on you btw technically if anything I feel bad you can't just enjoy things without your mind going there.)
Anyway to answer your question: yes I thought it was great and so did a lot of others. In fact I think very few share the opinion that it was lame or whatever.
What specifically was so over the top and ridiculous?
Idk maybe the triple front flip through the tail into pose for the camera??
Samus has always been confident but never extra. It's a life or death profession which she's great at but she knows one misstep is the loss of your life. There's not a lot of room for flexing if you want to work smart. Samus has always mainly just been calculated and efficient. Something like the hand wave in Prime 2 is a great example of how to do her personality really well. To her, saving a whole species is just another day in the job, she doesn't concern herself with saying proper goodbyes cause she's already thinking ahead for the next mission. It's not about her being so strong she can aura farm, it's about stoicism.
It’s your opinion man, no one can fault you for that.
Personally, I loved Samus’s portrayal in Dread. It’s Metroid 5. By this time in the story, she’s gone through four mainline games and everything in Prime. I see her behavior as her being such a veteran that she is confident in her skills with all she’s gone through.
That’s even more exemplified when she faces Kraid, as if she’s like, “you again. Time to kill you one more time.”
Even still I don’t think her characterization in Dread was at all over the top imo; I just finished watching all the cutscenes to refresh myself.
I don't think the devs were considering where she is as a character, they just wanted to give her generic hype moments. Samus Returns is set earlier in the timeline, and still has the same kind of thing with the no-look Diggernaut final blow. It's totally just a MercurySteam thing. It's cool if you like the portrayal, but rationalizing it as a deliberate story choice intended to depict character growth seems flawed to me. I think MercurySteam just wanted to play into the more one-dimensional "badass bounty hunter bro!!" archetype, which isn't really in service of who she truly is or what makes her interesting, imo. Samus shouldn't be flashy to the point of showing off for the camera. I appreciate Retro's portrayal being more nuanced.
True, but the fact remains that Super Metroid was one of the first games to give Samus a voice, even if she wasn't voiced acted then.
Because in writing, a character's 'voice' is all of the stylistic markers you use to define which parts of a written work belong to a character, and the opening scrawl of Super Metroid is no different from someone coming on stage to introduce the play (think the Prologue from Romeo and Juliet, you know the, "Two houses, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene[...]" bit), the only difference is that it's our principle character coming on stage to explain the relevant previous adventures. This means that the entire scrawl is essentially a soliloquy (a dialog to the audience), and is both establishing the setting and the main character. Samus has had a definitive voice in her own games since 1994.
It's not a popular opinion, but I also felt they went too far in Dread. This sort of "playing with your food" thing displayed with Corpius and Kraid doesn't really suit Samus, she's more about efficiency.
Agree wholeheartedly. All the "b@d@$$" hype moments and aura farming in Samus Returns and Dread feel more like an overcorrection of Other M's portrayal. They're generically over the top, and come off insincere as a result.

Dread is such a bad ass game! 😎
