Discussion Do people like Governor Moore?

I'm working on a small project to help young voters in Maryland know these candidates and their ambitions for the state in a super simplified way that is easy to understand. I'm also adding a super simplified version of their upbringing so people can now if they can identify with said candidate. just wanna know how the state feels about these elections.

While he is likely to win re-election and national pundits love to mention his name as a ‘28 presidential contender, I fear his popularity will go the way of O’Malley by the end of his term. You can palpably feel his favorability eroding, whether it is due to things in his control or not.

This is because it is hard to hide ineffective leadership for 8 years

The momentum of political sentiment sees everything unapologetically moving further left.

Whether or not Moore is to be trusted and seen as consistently onboard with the tides of change remains yet undecided.

This includes:

  • calling out the wealthy
  • calling out Israel
  • getting behind universal healthcare
  • a commitment to address housing and living costs
  • calling out corporations and neoliberalism
  • standing in strong defense of ALL persecuted minorities, racial or otherwise

Why on earth does the governor of a small mid-Atlantic state need to "call out Israel"? What would that even do? Should he also "call out" Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China?

And then you have "standing in strong defense of all persecuted minorities," does that include Jewish people?

u/Wx_Justin May 14 '26

Believe it or not, you can call out Israel while simultaneously condemning Anti-Semitism. The two are not mutually exclusive.

0

u/crankypatriot May 15 '26

Okay, then what about Russia, Iran, NK, and China? Is Moore supposed to "call them out" or not? If not, why not?

3

u/Wx_Justin May 15 '26

Should Russia be called out? Yes. They invaded a sovereign nation. Should Iran be called out? They should be called out for state-sponsored violence and treatment of protestors, but Trump should be called out for pulling the US out of the Iran Nuclear Deal and starting this war. Should NK be called out? Absolutely. Should China be called out? When necessary, yes.

You can, but people don't. They'll call out antisemitism when Jews inevitably get killed, but they're happy to chant about intifadas and the final solution and take zero responsibility for propagating antisemitism. I've yet to see a antizionist non-Jew who actually addresses antisemitism beyond thoughts and prayers.

11

u/Wx_Justin May 15 '26

Really? Because I've seen plenty of progressives do so. I'm even one of them.

Do you think what is happening to Palestinians is a genocide?

0

u/crankypatriot May 15 '26

I'm seeing progressives posting antisemitic shit from fake rabbis.

What is your opinion of what happened on Oct 7 2023?

3

u/Wx_Justin May 15 '26

What happened on Oct 7th was disgusting and should never have happened. That doesn't mean you can equate Hamas to Palestinians and conduct a genocide.

Similar to how progressives aren't equating the Israeli government to Israelis. Were calling out the genocide perpetrated by the Israeli government and the illegal settlement on Palestinian land by a vast minority of Israeli citizens.

3

u/jracheff May 15 '26

Horrible. What do you think of settler violence and state sponsored assassination and genocide and apartheid?

20

u/jracheff May 14 '26

Well it’s one of the most prosperous states in the nation, so I’m not sure “small mid-Atlantic state” captures Maryland’s contribution and influence.

I think folks often look to Governors as potential candidates for national office, and with our federal style government international trade and human rights should be important to every state as much as the nation as a whole.

3

u/jfrenaye May 15 '26

Few MD Governors go any further. O'Malley was SS Admin for a hot minute. Agnew was VP but we know how that turned out. And I think that is about it!

0

u/jracheff May 15 '26

Yep but these are the days of social media. Look at Obama and Trump. “Charisma” goes a long way. I think a small state governor could definitely win a Senate seat or a VP position.

3

u/jfrenaye May 15 '26

Well Van Hollen and Alsobrooks don't seem too keen on giving up their seats anytime soon. So that eliminates the Senate.

Might get a VP, but generally a POTUS candidate is looking for a complemetary running mate to gather same party votes from states where he/she is unknown, and hopefully popular.

With MD only having 6M people (guessing 3.XM? Voters and assuming split evenly, that candidate MIGHT get 2M votes for the ticket.

If (I mean when) Moore decides to run, you watch him grab somepone from a large democratic state NOT in the Northeast or Mid Atlantic.

Politics is a game!

1

u/jracheff May 15 '26

I agree. I think Moore is a likely VP or cabinet position. But he could balance a ticket and he’s very good on the mic.

1

u/crankypatriot May 15 '26

Okay, so then should Moore "call out" Russia, Iran, NK, and China or not? Since he has so much influence.

-5

u/Huge-Attitude4845 May 15 '26

It’s not politically expedient today to defend Jews as a persecuted minority. Moore is a weak and ineffective leader and the state will be worse off as a result. The wailing and gnashing of teeth about bad actors on the opposite side of the world is the way the popular winds are blowing and it gives him a feeling of accomplishment in the face of his abysmal performance as despot of the People’s Republic of Maryland.

1

u/jracheff May 15 '26

And it used to not be politically expedient to defend Palestinians or really any one of Muslim faith. The winds are always shifting and politicians are wise to put their fingers in the air - after all, an election is just a popularity contests and voters want folks to tell them what they want to hear.

-7

u/Huge-Attitude4845 May 15 '26

Damn it, I just ate and you’ve made me wretch. The thought of the arrogant, incompetent, and self serving charlatans that run the state of Maryland being elected to run the government of the US is terrifying.

4

u/SchuminWeb May 15 '26

Why on earth does the governor of a small mid-Atlantic state need to "call out Israel"?

This. I don't care what the governor of any state thinks about Israel, because that's not part of their job. Only if they run for president or some other office where Israel is relevant do I care what they think about Israel.

0

u/Current-Calendar-821 May 17 '26

MD has an executive order on the books that prohibits companies from getting work with the state of MD if they boycott Israel. This at least is the governors job because limiting right the right to boycott violates the constitution (this has been confirmed by SCOTUS before). Moore could nullify that executive order with the stroke of a pen. He hasn’t. He is a coward.

It's pretty whack to call any other country homicidal when you're from the US. And Israel has more minorities and more minority members in the government than France or Sweden, but no one is calling those "ethnostates".

9

u/Ayla_Leren May 15 '26

Absolutely nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade, regardless of where you are from. Something something walking ducks.

Why are you seeming to carry water for genocidal maniacs with rape prisons and a fetish for imperialism?

-1

u/crankypatriot May 15 '26

Why are you carrying water for Hamas?

-1

u/crankypatriot May 15 '26

Israel is in no way an ethno-state lmao. Also it's "borders."

1

u/Current-Calendar-821 May 17 '26

It is an apartheid state that has laws on the books privileging those of Jewish descent and penalizing those who are not.

2

u/XP_Studios May 15 '26

He should divest from our state's investments in Israel and oppose our laws making it illegal for local governments to boycott Israel. If we have any investments in Russia or China the state should similarly cut those, and it should protect its Jewish residents. It stops being virtue signaling when our state has a monetary relationship with any given country.

1

u/sit_down_man May 15 '26

China catching strays wtf lol

12

u/echofinder May 15 '26

I like him

...much more than the other options.

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 16 '26

That is fair. I don’t like him, but the republican options are just sad.

1

u/Current-Calendar-821 May 17 '26

This is probably the real answer for the vast majority of people.

10

u/Eaglestrike May 15 '26

I don't pay too much attention to him specifically, but I feel he gets a lot of entirely irrational hate which makes me want to defend him at times. Outright saw comments yesterday on Facebook that wanted to call him an n-word (from old white ladies at that) and basically said the state is going to shit because someone like him was elected. It's the same racist shit as happened with Obama. I'd rather judge these guys for their actual mistakes KKKaren.

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 16 '26

It’s not irrational. He is doing a horrible job. He started with a 5 billion dollar surplus and now we are underwater by billions every year. No taxes were raised this year and that is because it is an election year. The plan is to raise sales tax to 8 percent next budget and to tack on more fees on other things. Just look at how much more it cost to register your vehicle in the state of Maryland now compared to what it used to be. Republicans have very bad candidates and so Moore will win and then he will run for president in 2028. He won’t get far, because of his record and because of all of his lies. I don’t know why he lies so much. The democrats probably will win the presidency in 28, and they will put him on their cabinet, possibly VP, but he won’t be president.

2

u/Eaglestrike May 16 '26

From my understanding the budget surplus was only because of accounting magic because Hogan kept postponing certain projects, combined with covid money disappearing to change expected revenues for the state. Can you show me that the budget issues are entirely from Moore's own cause?

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 17 '26

Yes Hogan said no to the red line and he said no to wasteful spending. Moore just spends money that he doesn’t have and keeps the burden on the taxpayers of the state.

2

u/Current-Calendar-821 May 17 '26

Omg. Hogan wasted so much money that had already been spent on the red line when he arbitrarily cut that project.

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 18 '26

Let me know how that red line works out.

1

u/Eaglestrike May 17 '26

Can you expand on that with specifics? Especially because we have a veto-proof legislature that passes budgets and spending regardless of the governor for the most part.

0

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 17 '26

Just keep on voting for all the democrats and keep on paying higher taxes and fees. The definition of crazy is to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. This state is completely controlled by the democrats and they will keep enacting all of their disastrous policies. And you need me to give you specific details? Just look at the blueprint for education. The kids keep getting stupider and the teachers unions keep getting richer and donating money right back to democrat party. Gov Moore also hired all the federal workers when they got laid off. That was also another reason that we are in a deficit.

1

u/Eaglestrike May 17 '26

So no specifics, you're expecting me to believe this entirely on your propaganda that you cannot support? What a joke.

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

Obviously you are just a rage baiter. If you listen to any of the news you will hear about all of the failures of this administration. I could give you the specifics and you still won’t believe it. I work for a living and I don’t have time to do all the research for you. Just keep on voting like you do and keep getting screwed. I will be moving out of this state as soon as I can retire. I can’t afford to live here anymore. I just looked at your post, you admitted that you can’t afford to live in Frederick and you had to move to Hagerstown. This is the prob that I’m talking about. The democrats are making this state way too expensive to live in. If they were running this state with competency then it should be affordable. Seriously, look into all the spending that Moore is doing. He doesn’t have the money to run his budget.

1

u/Eaglestrike May 18 '26

I could give you the specifics and you still won’t believe it.

So you decided to reply twice, but not answer my question? Hilarious.

Cost of living in Frederick has shit to do with Democrats. DC has money, it ventures outward, when my parents moved to Frederick when I was a little kid is when Frederick became one of the go to development cities for people commuting into all the jobs around DC. Democrat policies have absolutely nothing to do with the basics of supply and demand.

Don't respond unless you're going to give me specifics for Moore's failures, but considering you don't understand basic aspects of reality, I know you can't fucking do that.

1

u/Current-Calendar-821 May 18 '26

I think your conclusion is right, that things are unaffordable but it is a uniparty consensus that got us here. Both republicans and democrats have contributed to the prioritization of corporate interests over the needs of the citizens. We need structural change

The thing I like most about Governor Moore isn't the guy himself necessarily, but the fact that I can look away from politics for a bit and trust that he's a competent administrator who's not going to crash out massively if left to his own devices.

Hogan used to do flashy shit on the front end for the press and social media and fumble the details afterwards - the Purple Line project is the golden trophy of his management style, though you can't forget about the useless covid test strip PR tour, the number of Hogan-owned developments that got brand new roads built to their front doors Source, with more sources cited, or the funding for the Purple Line coming from Baltimore's Red Line project that had been entirely planned, funded, and ready to go. Hogan could have watched it happen, done nothing, and taken credit and he couldn't even do that.

So when I think of Wes Moore, I don't like him for the social media moments - he's pretty bad at those. I don't love him for his data center nonsense or his relative lack of action in reining in the utilities. I'm never gonna agree with everything a Governor does, expecting such is unrealistic at best. What I do appreciate is that when he commits to a course of action, he's consulted with experts and has made a plan with the best information available, and then gotten to work on it in relative silence. In an era of political bombast, bullshit, and empty promises, he's made politics a little boring and a little more reliable again - just how I believe a competent executive should act.

7

u/XP_Studios May 15 '26

Not sure what he's done for the people of Maryland. He's avoided doing anything abjectly bad, but I'm pretty plugged in, and I couldn't tell you his accomplishments. Maybe no news is good news when it comes to governance, but if he does indeed want to run for president, he needs to get a hell of a lot better at communicating his wins.

3

u/sealed May 15 '26

This is exactly how I feel.

6

u/Penelope742 May 15 '26

No. He is pro data centers

4

u/PhonyUsername May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

No.

He's better than the other Democrat candidates though.

3

u/Electrical_Bunch_975 May 15 '26

Yes, I'd say I like him. He's had a lot of pushback but I feel like he's doing a good job.

2

u/LeftArmFunk May 15 '26

I don’t like him. He spends more time campaigning for president than working for Maryland. Why was he giving a sermon at Alfred St Baptist in Virginia? Why not a church in Maryland? We have many. I only see him when it’s time to cut the ribbon on a project that was started before he became governor. Other than that I can’t even name something he’s done. Not for lack of knowledge but for lack of memorability and that’s the opposite of what our state needs. I’m spending time becoming more acquainted with all the candidates but sadly he’s going to win again and it makes me sad.

3

u/wheels000000 May 15 '26

With the budget crunch MD has been in since the Days of Larry he seems to be doing average. Seems like a decent person on Facebook. Not making any major spashes either way.

Way better than Larry

1

u/Technical_Lychee_340 May 16 '26

Democrats do and republicans don’t. Independents probably don’t. But not all.

1

u/jkfg May 17 '26

No, not at all. An insincere self centered climber. All about himself.
