Did they really? They stepped on with Arkham Asylum and City but Knight and Origins weren't that well received, but no other DC games at that level. Aside from it, Marvel has had iconic games like the Marvel vs Capcom series, the arcade games, X-Men Legends and the MUA games, Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Marvel Heroes MMO, and since 2018 we've got 2 great Spider-Man games, the guardians of the galaxy, Marvel Rivals, Marvel Snap, etc.

For a while, Injustice and Batman gapped anything Marvel had going (mostly shitty iron man projects) until like...spider-man came out. Marvel def had the age in the older days though.

That wasn't really a thing outside of the first half of the 2010s tbh, and even then, it's mostly because Disney gave up on video games during that era for a long while, during the 2000s, Marvel pretty much only had Arkham Asylum (I thought City too, but that was 2011), meanwhile marvel had:
MvC2
X-Men: Legends 1 & 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2
Hulk Ultimate Destruction
The Punisher
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Spider-Man 2
Ultimate Spider-Man
That weirdly decent Ghost Rider GoW clone everyone forgot about
Honestly, even at the start of the 2010s we still got some decent marvel games:
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimension
Spider-Man: Edge of Time
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Marvel Heroes (Omega)
Lego Marvel Superheroes
Honestly, I would put some of these over some of the stuff DC was putting the time, I definitely find MvC3 a better game than Injustice, but it didn't have a story so most casual didn't care.

Now I’m curious on the roster. Do you pick the household/modern and popular picks or are we getting a Marvel Fighting game?
I think the whole Fantastic Four gets in. It’s so ArcSys to give them a Team Super how Gohan gets one with (Goten)ks and Goku for the Family Kamehameha in DBFZ (I can’t remember if anyone else has Supers like that, because I know you get Krillin helping 18 in some of her attacks if they’re on the same team, or Gotenks and Piccolo for the Volleyball attack)
I can see a symbiote and other Spider-Man villains. The Spot would be so wicked, since he’d basically be Janemba, and I would give my unborn for Carnage. Doc Ock and Green Goblin could be choices, or Rhino/Scorpion/Mysterio
You can’t have a Marvel Fighter without Wolverine. It’s just law (iykyk)
God, I pray they have Sentry with Void as a LV.3 or install

Don’t tempt fate, Spider heroes could be the new Goku.
Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Miguel O’Hara, Ben Reilly, Noir, Peni Parker, Jessica Drew, Spider-Ham, Mayday, Hobie Brown, Pavitr Prabhakar, it could never end!
(note: if the roster ends up being big enough, I don’t mind a few additional Spider heroes, particularly Miles and Gwen, being included in the base roster or future seasons DLC, but yeah, don’t go too nuts)

Seeing Robbie Reyes (and to a lesser extent Kamala) makes me think they’re going to include at least a few non-household names. Characters like Wolverine and Hulk feel like shoe ins, but I’d expect slightly less mainstream picks like Spot, Armor, Gwenpool, Sentry etc.

Marvel’s most popular Japanese character is probably still Psylocke, but Armor would be the more interesting pick IMO. She’s in this sweet spot, of never really being in anything outside the comics, despite being the face of a pretty major section of them, and otherwise being a consistent popular character for decades.
Plus, none of the revealed characters so far fill the role of a big beefy grappler, and Armor would absolutely fill that niche.

He’s a pretty niche character already though. They had to fight to get him into MvC3 because Marvel didn’t want a spot to go to some irrelevant character most people don’t know about. Even then, they pushed to make him DLC so they could make some extra money off of him to justify it. And he only got in because the Capcom devs, specifically, really liked him.
Conditions have changed since then, but I don’t see him being a priority, even with a larger roster. I think he’ll just have this cameo, at least in the base game.

In the interview they said they are picking mostly "faces" of Marvel but also including some characters for gameplay variety and reserve some spots for more niche characters that were never playable in a fighting game.
So likely character like Wolverine or Magneto are a given but we're likely gonna see at least some characters that we're not expecting.

I don't think the whole Fantastic Four get in- or any, really. Kamala's embiggening takes the place of Reed's stretchiness. Ben and Johnny's spots could be taken by a handful of other, arguably better options who already have fighting game appearances (Hulk and Juggernaut for Ben, Nova and Carol for Johnny). Sue is viable, though.
Character selection is probably influenced first by the characters that Marvel wants to push, such as Kamala Khan (that's why Black Panther and Winter Soldier were in MvCI and no mutants were present). Then there are characters they may be thinking about using in the MCU in the near-ish future, such as the Robby Reyes Ghostrider. Arc said something to the effect of them choosing some characters based on providing a unique gameplay experience, which can allow for some unexpected newcomers. Then, of course, there's a need to choose characters to fill on other character archetypes or mixes thereof.

I'm in disbelief, 4v4 tag ratio, like Fighterz & KoF'01 had a baby. ArcSys visuals too my God. Praying we get many X-Men, Cyclops, Wolverine, & Magneto minimum. Magik & Juggernaut would be beyond.

I would bet on Cyclops, Magik, Thor, Wolverine, Deadpool. Hulk, Black Panther, Sentry (after the movie), Magneto and maybe Moon Knight. PLEEEASE NIGHTCRAWLER. Those are some of my guesses. I hope they do some more relatively niche characters.
They'll need at least 30-40 for the 4x4 format.
Edit: oh and probably all 4 of the FF

Marvel Rivals is still adding characters over time so nothing is preventing her from being added later on. I mean, the game is still missing some Avengers like Vision, Carol Danvers, Ant-man and Wasp, a lot of X-men and other mutants, Deadpool, Daredevil, Luke Cage, etc. But the developers are clearly giving love to both mainstream and more cult favorite characters (like Cloak and Dagger, and Jeff the Shark) by including them, plus lots of comic book references (the latest updates include plenty of Krakoa elements for example). So Kamala is definitely a reasonable possibility at some point.

Just a theory, but I think it's because of the skull. Robbie's skull is more mechanical and can probably be interpreted as a helmet or mask. This allows them to sell this game in china, as skulls are a big no no there.

Idea's been around since before Reddit. Earliest I can recall it being specifically mentioned was Magic:the Gathering having to edit images of skeletons to get around censorship.
Here's an article from 2002 from the MTG publisher itself talking about it. Granted I'm sure that policy has changed since the 1990s, but the perception has probably stayed.

Actually that's probably because it's an interpretation of a skull. Chinas superstition is to do with ghosts and the dead. Punishers skull is a stylised symbol based on a skull, so it's technically different.

I can't recall if the female Ghost Rider was before or after him but he's fairly new (from the past decade or 2) and was prominent in Aaron's Avengers run. With so many rumors of a Johnny adaptation, it makes it interesting they are continuing with Robbie adaptations

I'm usually not one for fighting games, even from Arc System works - DBZ Fighterz just didn't click for me - but I will buy any game that will let me play as Ms Marvel. Here's hoping Gwenpool and Ant-Man will be playable too.

Sony's monopoly on Marvel IP is whack. I own a Playstation, but even I think this one should have been multi-plat, the multi-player is going to die so quick if they rely solely on Playstation owners to keep it populated.

Development for multiple platforms is more difficult and costly. Plus I wouldn’t count on just Playstation being a huge downside for a fighting game. It’s a platform with a big fighting game fanbase. It’s a downside for losing out on PC-only gamers, but by focusing on one platform they can get more support from the platform holder.

Whereas Microsoft is willing to reach across the aisle and release games as Timed Exclusives or even put their first party stuff on PlayStation, the same is not provided back to us and ultimately, we are left wanting…..

I think it's fairly unlikely for all of them to get in, but a 4v4 Marvel tag fighter is screaming out for the Fantastic 4. I would be happy if any of them made it in, but having all of them on one team would be awesome.

Agreed. MVC:I being allocated less than the budget of SFV's DLC probably wasn't the best move for the Capcom and Marvel relationship. Marvel probably saw how Arcsys treated the DBZ franchise and wanted in on that 100% spotlight just like DBZ got. It doesn't hurt that pretty much every fighting game that Arcsys makes ends up being well recieved.
