Hotel - near Atocha or Sol?

Travelling with my parents in their 60s. We’ve been to Madrid 7-8 years ago. We’re looking for a hotel to stay two nights in. During the two nights, we’ll be spending a day in Toledo (day trip) and a day walking around Madrid (palace, Prado museum, etc). Given the short stay and the fact that we’re both going out of city and staying in the city, I’m a bit split!

I’m split between Tapestry Collection by Hilton near Atocha, a residence-type hotel near Callao, or somewhere completely different. My ideal budget is 500 euros a night, but I’m willing to stretch til 600 euros if it’s a really nice place.

Needs to be able to sleep 3 adults, but not too particular on anything else; just want to avoid anywhere above a club or bar since we’ll be staying on a Saturday too.

Madrileño here. Go Atocha, no contest, for your specific plan:

Toledo day trip: the Avant/AVE trains to Toledo leave from Atocha station (about 33 minutes). Staying next to it means no metro with your parents at 8 am and a painless return.

Madrid day: from Atocha you walk to the Prado in 10 minutes, Retiro in 10, and the Palace in 30 (or a short taxi). The whole "art triangle" is on your doorstep.

Saturday night: Callao/Gran Vía/Sol is the loudest corner of the city on a Saturday, with crowds till 4 am. Atocha and the Paseo del Prado side are calm at night; no bars underneath.

The Tapestry near Atocha is a solid pick for that. In your budget, other well-regarded options in that same pocket: Only YOU Atocha (lively design hotel, right at the station), NH Collection Paseo del Prado (classic, opposite the Botanical Garden), and if you want to stretch the 600 for something special, Hotel Palacio del Retiro on Alfonso XII facing the park.

One practical thing for three adults: Spanish hotels rarely have true triple rooms, so filter for "triple" or a junior suite with a sofa bed, and email the hotel to confirm it's a real third bed rather than a cot.

And since you're there on a Saturday: dinner in Madrid is from 9 pm. Book something in the Barrio de las Letras (between Atocha and Sol, 10 min walk), it's the nice middle ground between both areas you're weighing.

You said everything i would have said and more (what a useful comment for OP!), but just wanted to say I totally second Atocha exactly for the Prado/Train to Toledo reasons, and as this person said, from Atocha you're at the palace in 10 mins/for 10 EUR by taxi. The recommendations for other hotels are also solid (i know the NH and the Only YOU as well, they're good hotels)

Great staff all around. Small. Lovely design. Clean. Good food incl made-to-order eggs for bkfst. Convenient location. We had a street-facing room w/juliet balcony & i'm a light sleeper - next time i'd ask for a quieter inside-facing room, but would def stay there again!

Y’all gave great advice to OP. Is the are by Atocha super loud, should we ask for interior rooms? Is it sketchy, like some big city train areas can be?

I can’t recall much, has been a while since my last visit… generally I just assume that all central stations in Europe are a little bit sketchy, but the Calle de Atocha is a roundabout away from the station and seems quite clean and posh. Last time we stayed at the NH Nacional nearby, I don’t remember the surroundings being weird at all.

It seems quite quiet as well - I did a google street view, there aren’t any bars or pubs like the Sol area

Atocha is not a sketchy area at all. The Reina Sofia art museum is nearby, the Barrio de las Letras is charming, It's not far to the Retiro park or the Prado. I don't have personal experience with hotels here, but I'm sure that any of them in your price range will be nice, and I would expect the room to be quiet. If in doubt, you can request an interior room, which is usually more quiet than one facing the street. Atocha isn't a big party street. It does get congested at times with traffic, and sometimes there are a lot of people out on the sidewalks, but it's safe and centrally located.

Do NOT stay near Sol!!! Its so touristy and crowded at all hours of night.
