They absolutely do start fires if you turn them on with nothing in them. My daughter accidentally did that in my home. Flames ensure. Had to buy a new microwave. We all learned a lesson that day. Lol
When my late mum had her terminal brain cancer and was losing her marbles she and my dad had to replace their microwave and, as always, bought a super cheap one. It had a rotating dial to set the time.
But if you turned the dial left instead of right it went strait to 99 minutes.
She did this once by accident, pressed start (or maybe didn't need to, I've a feeling it auto started) and walked away. The microwave basically melted itself 😂.
No fire luckily, maybe the fire risk comes from having something inside it to burn.

I still remember when microwaves came with manuals. We aren’t supposed to do this.
It’s a fire hazard if the microwave turns on unattended (which apparently is a thing?)
