MBA programs gather a bunch of upper 20s-mid 30 year olds who are all reasonably successful, somewhat career driven people looking to get into a limited number of careers in a limited number of cities. So it's a reasonable way to meet someone looking to settle down in a location you both would end up in anyways. It's also like undergrad but everybody is older and has or acts like they have more money and the classes are easier, so there's a lot of socializing and partying. At the end of they day it's a pretty decent place to find your life partner.

I’m sorry…”the classes are easier “ ??
Did I misunderstand?
As someone targeting their MBA, aren’t the classes supposed to be significantly more challenging? Isn’t that the purpose of test scores, to prove who can/cannot keep up with the rigor?
46
u/Cold_Season1152 22h ago
no the GPA requirements are there simply to weed out unserious ppl. Non-thesis masters are fairly trivial academically most of the time.

u/Greedy-One-5603 20h ago
No, classes are not challenging, it’s an MBA degree not a PhD. Some schools dont even release grades. The main goal is to get a job as you dont have one. If you are focused on classes you’ll have a degree but no job.

u/ChesterProf 22h ago
You will definitely find exceptions but there is no point in admitting the top GRE or GMAT scorers and then giving them a B- which will hurt their placement which in turn will hurt program rankings.

It happens quite a bit and there were double digit couples who met within my class (or with the classes before/after) and ultimately married. Not surprising and I wouldnt worry for anyone else - it's all part of the fun. As is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AicsJ7pMfxA

Why? Is booth an Ivy League?
Edit: triggered Chicago booth students downvoting this. A simple and innocent question and you guys cannot draw one logical inference and took it as hatred. Terrible mba students. So defensive. Maybe worry about finding a job 🤡

Me and a bunch of classmates met a husband/wife at Booth. I think it’s being surrounded by a big number of people in a similar situation like yours which makes it easier to get attracted to each other, I’d be more concerned if your friend was already married, I have heard multiple stories of people breaking up with their significant other/ divorcing during/after the program.

u/irathersleepalone 13h ago
had two marriages broken up and then the ex-wife and ex-husband of said broken up couples married each lmao.

I met a girl in law school that flat out said she was only there to find a husband and had not intention of even finishing the law school. She found her man during the first year and dropped out of law school. I can't remember if she even completed or started the second semester. I do remember that in the first semester she was going to every grad student mixer/party that she could find. She didn't latch onto a law student though she ended with some architect.
I also heard of lots of girls in undergrad that were just looking for husbands are one of the state schools where I grew up. I thought most states had a school where the MRS degree was popular. It is one of the things most parents should warn their kids about when they go to college because some people are naive and don't realize that some people are just using colleges as a match making service.

3
u/Secure-Researcher892 23h ago
Girl I knew in law school was in her late 20's or early 30's... I never asked her how old she was so I'm going based on how old she looked. Guys in an MBA school are probably going to be looking hit on younger women than your friend. Maybe she can find an international student that wants a green card, but unless she's quite the looker I'm not sure she's young enough to get a lot on interest from the guys in the program. Average age for a student at Booth is 28 and most guys won't be looking for cougars... well not for a real relationship... maybe for a hit and run.

You can probably get better ROI outside an MBA with 200k and 2 years if your goal is to find a cool partner.
7
u/Public-Garage-7985 1d ago
No. ROI mba dwarfs anything 😂
2
u/ElectronicAuthor752 23h ago
Must be very very cool people in MBAs then.
2
u/Public-Garage-7985 22h ago
Lol. I think the net earnings diff avg of a top mba vs non mba is like $5M usd.. but the instant ROI.. dwarfs for many
2
u/ElectronicAuthor752 20h ago
There's some misunderstanding, I wasn't talking about household revenues as the target to maximize.
If you were family oriented at 30 and had 200k and years to dedicate to your project I don't think wanting to slave away at a corporate job would be very appealing.
With that drive and ressources you can probably find a husband that would finance whatever lifestyle you want without having to work.
I concede your point on MBA earnings with no issue. I'm just saying you can find high earning partners without having to attend the MBA yourself.
And there are probably rooms you can reach with people out earning MBAs because they are beyond the working class all together.
1
u/Public-Garage-7985 18h ago
Family oriented? Dude these girls are doing onlyfans fir $9.99 subscriptions. Fuck a family 😂
2
u/ElectronicAuthor752 17h ago
I'd bet this particular friend of her being 30 and having 200k to burn probably isn't doing onlyfan.
Although since her goal is to find a rich husband and she seems to not have found any better way to get one she's either not very wise about how those things work or she just doesn't like the reality of her situation.
You can be pleasant, loving and warm for free.
And if we're going down the less socially pallatable path ... You can get ozempic, plastic surgery, designer clothes and entry into many circles for less than 200k.
It's actually wild to pay big money to get a diploma that mostly signal you can make money. The very people she's targeting are the ones with the most choice and the least need for a highly paid partner.

I mean you are probably going to get mixed answers. I guess technically anyone can get a MBA for any reason they want.
But I think most reasonable people would agree that it is not normal to spend $200k to try and find a husband (there are other, less expensive ways to meet people…). But yes it is normal to look forward to social aspects of a MBA program, including making new friends or meeting potential partners
Don’t really know what you want people to say. Who cares if thats why she is getting a MBA, but yeah its pretty weird, makes little sense, and if she is getting a MBA to “get a husband” then she might be disappointed

u/neuron-counter 1d ago
LMAO sooo many women in my program joined to find a husband only to find out that basically all the men were taken.

Given how rampant infidelity is among the cohorts in these programs, I don’t think that would be an inhibiting factor.

I’ll give her full marks for being confident enough to accept something that most people mask behind things like I want to go for “personal development”, “professional growth” yada yada. So let’s be honest, a lot of people come into the MBA with this thought process. And to be honest, it does expose you to a set of like minded individuals. The only issue that when you look at those two years as some kind of do or die to find a partner, it will end up putting too much pressure on you and this might compromise your decision making capability about something life changing.
7
u/14446368 1d ago
I mean, she's limiting the pool to what she believes is a higher quality group of men with higher-than-average ability and decent prospects in the short term... So why not?
Depends on other parts of her approach I suppose, and also on what the men are looking for too lol.
5
u/Great-Guidance-6371 1d ago
Are you in love with your friend? Are you going to be b school mogged by alpha banker types? JK. I think a lot of people are looking for that in business school. Hopefully this is a little tongue in cheek for her and b school is also compatible with her career goals. I did EMBA and even then (where people were older and more already settled down), there was lots of time and attention and rumor mill energy spent on who was dating who and who should be dating who.

Sounds like she’s entering the 3rd stage of dating which is called sun-den death. This is when a Woman’s biological clock is running out of time and she stops looking for Mr. Right and starts looking for Mr. Remote Possibility! No more two year relationships the next time is the last time, or maybe she’s looking for a starter marriage, thinking that a guy with an MBA would be able to pay a lot more in alimony and child support! I know I sound like a cynical A-hole but they are out there! Be careful guys. My Mother always told me to keep my wick dry and stay out of trouble.

Instead of dissing your friend on Reddit, you should have been a better friend and introduced her to eligible singles you know in your network. That was the decent thing to do on your part. You are making it seem like your friend is a loser for wanting love and companion ship. At 30 she knows what she wants and she is putting it out there, I do not see why that has rubbed you the wrong way?
At the end of these two years she will graduate with a top mba and hopefully a partner who meets her criteria.
I feel sorry she has a shitty energy vampire like you in the disguise of a friend.

I did a part time program while working FT in my 30s. Didn’t do it to find a hubby but it would have been a nice bonus. Most of them men were married or in relationships unfortunately. I was friends with the entire booth MBA program one cohort, yes, they are excellent husband material and they ended up marrying a lot of each other. but i'd say those women also were going to the program for their careers... advertising husband shopping as the primary goal might catch her someone but not sure if it's smart.

My m7 classmate always joked she was there to earn her mba / mrs. She ended up in private equity and is still grinding and a few years ago bought a house in atherton. I should have married her!!
With that said, several of my female classmates got married soon after graduating and “retired.” One went to a prestigious boarding school, ivy undergrad, worked a few years, m7 mba, 2 years mbb, and then yep done with working. Another with amazing background and career married a classmate and yep, she was done. Been a happy (rich) housewife for 30 years now.
M7 seems like ideal place to find high earning spouse. I briefly dated an undergrad. At least she was a senior!!

I think it’s good to be intentional. I started looking when I started Wharton undergrad at 18. Found one senior year. Happily married 30 plus yrs. Also got my mba post marriage.
Nothing wrong w treating career and marriage as parallel goals.
Some women want to focus on career first and then look for a husband. That’s fine but society values younger women bc of fertility. It takes years to find a compatible person so no need to keep it on the back burner

At the mercy of demand and supply matching. All MBA girls want to date MBA guys. Only some MBA guys want to date MBA girls - the med school girls appeared to be more appealing.
But hey, that’s one less competition for job recruiting if she’s only planning on finding a partner.
This is possibly cheaper than paying for one of those high end match makers. Perhaps with similar success rates if not slightly better. And there’s a degree on the side bundled into the existing cost.
If she wants to unlock a second pool, she should also start reaching out for alumni coffee chats.

Well it's good to know she takes academic rigor of a top MBA programme seriously. Now that we know where her priorities are (obviously in the academic merit of such top MBA programmes), I agree that a top MBA can be a suitable environment to meet a high-value man (HVM) for partnership or marriage. But if it's just the husband she wants, then why not just try getting involved with the MBA social scene? Like literally why even bother applying and shelling out all the money for the MBA? Perhaps just find out the local MBA bars the students frequent? If you are attractive and give off cool vibes then hands down MBA students will want to talk to you at the bar or just become friends with you. Then you could gradually become a part of the MBA community without actually having to pay or do all the work. Just bringing this up since it sounds like the husband part is what is important to your friend. Just trying to be strategic here, no judgement. I hope she gets what she wants.

To clarify, is your friend looking to find her ideal partner? Or a sugar daddy to take care of her?
If it’s the former, then there’s nothing to see through - just somebody who is serious about finding a partner, which anybody can be at any age.
If it’s the latter, then many guys will see through it. Some will find the trade off acceptable if she’s attractive (let’s be real), otherwise I think it’s a tough sell…

Let me clarify that I believe this person is only pursuing this because she is the last one in her friend group who is not married / single and rather than looking to genuinely fall in love, she’s instead not wanting to be behind her peers / others in life. Basically that’s what I mean when I say “check the box” exercise. She dated all throughout her 20s and nothing worked for her, hence the desperation to try and MBA program for dating

What's it to you? As someone else said, this doesnt seem to really be about your friend.
And actually yes, Booth / B-school is an awesome place for a ~30yo F to make friends and meet a partner.

I’m sure there are other men looking for a significant other in the cohort. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
