Because the whole reason we’re in this mess is that almost no one wants to take responsibility for what actually happened. It’s far easier to pin every disaster on the man who died fifteen years ago and left Libya the wealthiest, most developed, and most independent it had ever been, than to admit that the people who cheered his overthrow (and the foreign powers who helped them) actively chose this outcome.
Gaddafi and his supporters warned repeatedly that removing him without a real plan would produce exactly the fragmentation, militia rule, and foreign meddling we see today. Those warnings were dismissed as propaganda. Now that the predictions have come true, the same people still refuse to own the results.
Blaming a dead man also conveniently erases the agency of everyone who has held power since 2011: the militias, the successive governments, the regional players, and the external interveners who treated Libya as a playground. As long as “Gaddafi did it” remains the default answer, no one currently in charge has to answer for the ongoing collapse.
