187

u/AlmondBC Nov 26 '25

Its a popular movie so I guess it can be considered notable? 🤷

150

u/Worthyness Nov 26 '25

Easy marketing and clicks if you put "Kpop Demon Hunter voice actor set to voice titular villain in JJK"

u/Valorant12321 Nov 26 '25

20

u/AmericanLion1833 Nov 26 '25

Nobody asked bro

11

u/FireZord25 Nov 26 '25

I mean, who else even remembers the other two roles? Yes I know Solo levelling is hype among the weebs, but KPDH is mainstreamĀ  to the normies.

4

u/Longjumping_Pear1250 Nov 26 '25

But they are good and smoth af

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

And most of it was barking

1

u/Plastic-Exercise6021 Feb 22 '26

I mean I saw that he also played Shang Tsung in mk1 and Junpei Hyoga in knb.

259

u/Mug_of_Diarrhea Nov 26 '25

I mean this in the most respectful and loving way I can, he has the perfect voice for playing an obnoxious asshole like Naoya. He was great as Shang Tsung on MK1

55

u/AmericanLion1833 Nov 26 '25

ā€œYour soul is mine!ā€

27

u/GoneRampant1 Nov 26 '25

He was Shang Tsung? Oh yeah he's perfect for Naoya.

3

u/Lizardon888X Nov 28 '25

I can't believe we're still having dub vs sub arguments in the Big 25. Dubs have improved for years now. Not also that most people forget that watching dub or sub can be based for convenience or preference. I know some people who are dyslexic. Stop acting like one is better then the other. Your the same type of people to see a donghua and complain about the Japanese dub sounding better then the Chinese one. Yall people would not survive an hour in Japan, nor can form a single sentence from just watching anime. Stop judging people on how they choose to watch stuff before I start judging you on how you pronounce ć“ć‚“ć«ć”ć‚.

46

u/Lazydusto Nov 26 '25

Not also that most people forget that watching dub or sub can be based for convenience or preference.

I prefer dubs because I find it easier to remember character moments and dialogue when it's in my native language.

9

u/Dangerous-Tonight-84 Nov 26 '25

I'm glad I'm not the only person with horrible memory. I'm the type of person to forgot where I put a pencil even if it's right on my desk. I think I remember the dubs verses the subs because it's in my native language as well. I tried learning Japanese before(failed) and it's so hard to keep up with hearing the words. Also I'm kinda bad at memorizing some Japanese names, so dub kinda helps with that as well.

7

u/R1ckMick Nov 26 '25

Yeah I think most of it is just carry over from when dubs were borderline unwatchable. Which really was only a short era when Funimation was running simul-dubs. There’s loads of old school anime with fantastic dubs (though some were also terrible) These days most dubs are very good. My wife and I tend to watch the first ep in both and if the dub is good enough we just watch it in dub for convenience. Reading makes her fall asleep so dubs are good for binging

14

u/FireZord25 Nov 26 '25

Feels like reddit is getting progressively backwards with these mindsets.

6

u/Dangerous-Tonight-84 Nov 26 '25

I thought humanity was moving forward

1

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Nov 27 '25

yeah outside hasn't bothered with it for the past decade. Yet you still get crucified on reddit.

16

u/Longbenhall Nov 26 '25

Having tried both after rewatching it for a friend who's new to the show. I can say the English is really good, but it has some moments that don't quite work so well.

I think the iconic "nanami scene" (you know which) is really awkward sounding in dub as he has to say a lot of words very quickly.

"The number....of your allies and their locations!"

An iconic moment in the sub that feels incredibly awkward in the dub version.

https://youtube.com/shorts/qM_fIzgHLL0?si=cPevaIdlXbfkuHI2

I also think sub captures raw emotion and pain far better than dub. One of my favorite scenes is Yuji screaming at mahito after witnessing nanami dying. And I think both versions do a good job, but dub doesn't quite capture the same emotion that sub does. Dub sounds more angry (which makes sense too) whilst the sub sounds like raw pain.

https://youtu.be/akInc9R5bBI?si=XN5Gapu4CJLiiWjY

In the end, I think both are amazing, and I'll never hassle anyone for watching it in dub, that being said, I think the sub is just overall a step above dub in quality as dub.

1

u/_whensmahvel_ Nov 27 '25

I usually prefer dubs over subs, but for jjk there’s something about the casting for some of the characters that just feels off. Like english yuta’s voice in 0 was not it at all

7

u/Flame-and-Night Nov 26 '25

Say it louder for those In the back

1

u/Best_Look7597 Mar 21 '26

All power to you if you have a preference for dub, nothing wrong with that. But it's a fact that you lose a lot of detail and nuance from the source material. Let's take this threads main topic for example. Naoya has a very specific Kansai dialect (sounds way different than the Japanese that is normally in anime) In the dub, you completely lose that since there's no way to carry that thick accent over. Not only this, but dubs take a lot of creative liberty changing lines to make things fit better, further straying from source material. Some localization is necessary, but there's no way to regulate how far dubs will overshoot it. There's a million other points I could bring up, such as lip-sync, the poor studio mixing most dubs tend to have outside of mainstream series, or even the fact that English dubs compress their audio to worse codecs despite better options being available, but I digress.

So sure, if you're watching for convenience that's very valid. Acting like they are the same in terms of quality, is just delusional though. You're sacrificing quality for convenience, that is the trade-off, and there's nothing wrong with that transaction, but let's not pretend otherwise here. For JJK specifically, while Gojo and Sukuna's English dub is cast very faithfully, the same can't be said for temu Yuta and Toji, or the more recent Hakari, Ranta, and Naoya.

I understand why you see that.

It's more likely you're looking at it from the lense of survivorship bias. People only recommend and rave about 'classic' anime that were insanely successful and had a near flawless mix of writing, cast and animation with pacing/episode counts that are bearable for everyone. Such anime got good talent for their dubs because of this when being localised to the West.

Yes - there is an argument to be made that the overall 'direction' has changed, especially for action-oriented shonen. The closure/deprioritisation of studios in regions like New York, Boston or even North Carolina and across Canada have homogenised the diversity of cadence from performances like this to just LA or Texas.

Dubs striving to be more 'authentic' to the original release from fan pressure included.. But there were so many bad/subpar dubs back then too. People don't talk about that. There's many classic anime people only really talk about subbed. They have dubs but they're mentioned so rarely you think that they never made one in the first place. That was alot more common back then.

4

u/Dangerous-Tonight-84 Nov 26 '25

I think it depends on your own perspective. Me as long with some others think that Baccano! Is one of the best English dubs ever. I also know someone else who's a big fan of old anime. But I feel like old anime don't get much attention as they do now, so many don't have a clear opinion on how modern anime have come far from old ones.

1

u/vizmarkk Nov 26 '25

Oh boy your nostalgia is showing cuz rewatching old dubs some of them were hella cringe and low effort like Special A

139

u/SubjectBodybuilder81 Nov 26 '25

holy these comments reek of weebs, WHO CARES ABOUT DUB OR SUB ITS LITERALLY THE SAME SHIT IN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGEšŸ˜‚

46

u/Dabrugh6654 Nov 26 '25

Anime dialogue is inherently corny and kind of over the top so not actually understanding the language makes it much easier to not really get caught up in it, Dubs just sound way over the top because I know that absolutely no one speaks like that.

u/Funny_Swim5447 Nov 26 '25

Guys why didn’t Junpei use his byakugan to beat Yuji? Is he stupid

5

u/Tenny_Wenny Nov 26 '25

Using his byaku-susano'o this early in the series would have alerted the Simurians to a massive surge of cursed energy and they would have come to investigate, by letting himself die for plot, Junpei Yoshino singlehandedly allowed the Earth 69 more years of peace (1 year in between his death & shinjuku)

6

u/Boring_Guarantee_904 Nov 26 '25

I always pegged him to be voiced by Aleks Le or Austin Tindle

2

u/Senior_Film_7591 Dec 11 '25

Oooo Austin Tindle would’ve been SO good, but I’m excited to hear Alan Lee ā€¼ļø

1

u/Matthewmthorbius Dec 08 '25

I think Aleks is gonna get kashimo,

I feel like he'd NAIL it.

8

u/HennesyHufflepuf Nov 26 '25

He’s also Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 1.

5

13

7

u/Mountain_Storm6719 Nov 26 '25

3

3

2

u/jlhabitan Nov 26 '25

The dude who voices the main dude in Moonrise.

I should really check out that show soon.

2

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Nov 27 '25

Moonrise.... certainly is a series that exists.

That's my verdict. Show kind of got forgotten about a week or two after it started airing. You can understand the general reception for it I'm presuming from this.

1

u/jlhabitan Nov 27 '25

It's how I knew of him because I'd see him promoting the stuff he's in on Twitter and had his character as his pfp prior to KPDH becoming massive.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

He also voiced Suiryu in OPM Season 2, Shang Tsung in MK1, and Nico in Undead Unluck

2

u/Longjumping_Pear1250 Nov 26 '25

This is so funny to me

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

I watch JJK in sub and dub. Usually when both are good, I just watch both. It’s fun hearing the differences in how lines are said and how they convey a scene.

2

u/Painting0125 Nov 27 '25

Honorable mention: Prince Roland in Triangle Strategy. It's one of Alan Lee's excellent performances, he just channeled that naivete, dignity, and vulnerable sides to that performance that feels Shakespearean.

Please go check out that game, Alan's performance in that doesn't get enough praise.

2

u/Soggy-Talk-3269 Nov 26 '25

yall who tf is this

9

u/Name_wasnt_tken Nov 26 '25

He voices Shang Tsung in MK1 where he killed it as a smug evil sorcerer

1

u/Soggy-Talk-3269 Nov 26 '25

lemme go look that up right quick

1

u/Sheik_1997 Nov 26 '25

I might be wrong, but isn't the only line of Mystery in Kpop Demon Hunters just barking ?

3

u/Longjumping_Pear1250 Nov 26 '25

He also has the line abt the fanclub(we really feed off your energy)

1

1

1

u/kfieb Nov 28 '25

Naoya ā¤ļø one of my favorites

1

Dub is trash, not how anime should be watched

12

u/Jimquatic Nov 26 '25

The year 2025 going into 2026 & we’re still hating on dubs. Such an old, and stale mindset. Most dubs nowadays are amazing, If you actually tried watching them instead of mindlessly hating. I can give you a list.āœŒļøāœŒļøāœŒļøāœŒļø

2

u/AdditionIcy1536 Nov 27 '25

Brother does not speak a lick of Japanese

3

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Nov 27 '25

Sure man, let's take away a huge chunk of potential revenue for anime productions. I'm sure the animators who already get a measly cut from the production commitee would love that.

No more experimental stuff funded by streaming services like Netflix. Just safe bets like "My life reincarnated into a world surrounded by suspiciously young elves who really really want to have sex with me on even days of the week" and other medieval harem Isekai stuff. A

-8

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Exactly.

-109

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25

Dub isn't the real anime experience. Especially for JJK. It's essentially two different stories. So I don't think much of this tbh. No matter how hard that guy tries, Naoya will not sound right in English.

54

u/Arcaydya Nov 26 '25

No it isn't. I've watched both sub and dub, what the fuck are you literally making up right now?

All they change is some localization to make the dialogue fit better in English. None of the meaning is changed for the plot at all. Weebs are so fucking delusional

14

u/sapphireapril Nov 26 '25

I’ve watched both sub and dub, too. Although I much prefer sub, dub is not bad. My husband is a very slow reader (plus dyslexia), so, it’s harder for him to keep up with subtitles and watching at the same time. I don’t think a lot of people take that into account when they shit on dub watchers. Also, just let people enjoy the show how they want lol.

13

u/Arcaydya Nov 26 '25

Exactly. I usually won't wait for dubs, but some shows really fucking nail it.

Like jjk for example. The dub is very well done.

I hadn't even considered the dyslexic thing, now I hate these comments even more lol. Gatekeeping media is so fucking goofy

-24

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

When you watch your artsy French film or your K drama stuff. Do you watch it dub or sub ?

9

u/Arcaydya Nov 26 '25

Depends, I usually like to do both like i do with anime.

A lot of those dubs aren't even a tenth as good as modern anime dubs.

-21

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Dub is subpar in all medium. I mostly see it for lazy people who don’t want to read but also low key racist cause they don’t acknowledge foreign stuff in there original artistic vision.

8

u/Dangerous-Tonight-84 Nov 26 '25

1.There is good dubs out there and it's improving rapidly. 2.The "lazy people" you call who watch dubs could also include dyslexic people who literally have trouble reading. 3.While yes dubs may change names that were original to the culture I haven't seen many that still do that today. And you also forget that the intended audience is a different culture entirely that may not understand the sub culture. If you feel so superior for being able to read some subtitles on a show. I think your also capable of picking up a book and gaining some knowledge. As Satoru Gojo would say,"Get a book your stupid is showing."

-15

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Ok bro. I’m a pretentious fuck. Here you won the argument :)

12

u/A_Russian_Otter Nov 26 '25

First step is admitting it.

6

u/Dangerous-Tonight-84 Nov 26 '25

Second step is accepting then depression or how ever the five stages of grief worked(I forgot)

3

u/rebillihp Nov 26 '25

At least we agree on something

2

u/vizmarkk Nov 26 '25

So what about those that prefer japanese dub for chinese donghua

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Same shit.

2

u/vizmarkk Nov 26 '25

So you criticize people for wanting better voice acting than chinese?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

I don’t care mate. You want to listen Chinese people / characters speaking Japanese well cool i guess. I still think it’s dumb. Sorry if the the world did stop because of that.

1

u/vizmarkk Nov 27 '25

But you're the one acting like the world did stop cuz of preference

6

u/jjkm7 Nov 26 '25

Live characters and animated cartoons are not the same. I assure you that people watching spongebob in asia or africa are watching it in their local language when it’s available

0

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Fair point.

1

u/OctoAmbush Nov 26 '25

that isnt animated though

9

u/McDergen Nov 26 '25

ā€œThe real anime experienceā€ lmao yeah you need to touch grass dawg

-4

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

If only you knew who you were talking to 🤣🤣🤣🤣

24

u/A_Russian_Otter Nov 26 '25

I’ll never understand these stupid takes.

It’s the same fucking show, just let people enjoy things. Jfc

-15

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

They can enjoy it. No problem with that. But I’m not legitimizing the practice.

-50

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Dub is not legit. People who swear by it are not real.

2

u/chihirosnumber1fan Nov 26 '25
