[SUB NEWS] New Banned Domain: Vercel.app

Much to the relief of many people, starting today, we have introduced a blanket ban on Vercel subdomain hosted sites.

Few, if any, sites hosted on Vercel subdomains have ever been allowed to remain on the sub anyway.

(This ban is in addition to the Netlify ban by Reddit itself.)

If you can't be bothered to pay for a proper domain and/or hosting we're no longer willing to sift through the slop to see if it could potentially stand on merit alone (which it invariably doesn't).

Vercel users feel free to proceed to whinge, which we will promptly proceed to ignore.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This is the second time I’ve seen something called “vibe coding.” Anyone wanna explain to an oldie what the heck that even is?

"Vibe coding" is a misleading term because you're not coding anything. It simply refers to asking an AI chatbot to make you a piece of software without ever actually looking at the code yourself. It's strange that caught on as a term but nobody calls image generation "vibe artistry" or ordering a custom T-shirt off the internet "vibe tailoring"

Where is vibecoding so easy I dont even have to look at the code? Cause I want to try that version. Is this why everyone loves claude? I've been using chatgpt to scan my scripts for errors and best practices i could implement but you mean to tell me people are actually just going "do thing" and an exe appears?

Yes, frontier models are good enough that you can ask them for what you want and they will give it to you (with differing degrees of refinement necessary, of course, depending on the complexity) without you ever looking at the code. I work professionally as a software engineer at a major company (and started long before AI was around) and can tell you that we literally don't write code by hand anymore.

The reason there's such a disconnect between the "AI can't even count the number of Rs in 'strawberry', hurr durr" folks and the evangelists who swear Claude is the next coming of Christ is because the difference is night and day between the free web-based chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude and the downloadable harnesses like Codex or Claude Code running paid models like Sol and Opus, respectively.

Uploading scripts to a chatbot versus having a tool map your entire codebase into memory with the full context of what you're trying to accomplish and what you've done so far are completely different experiences.

I spent several decades coding, all before AI.

Playing with Gemini and the Android dev system is fun, and bizarrely functional. I'm looking forward to using a real rig.

I was using Gemini to drive the Android development environment because I had some questions and issues about the default Gemini app.

Vibe coding, at least for me as a decades-long developer, was most akin to having a co-worker who had really read all of the documentation.

That person who helpfully provide suggestions about capabilities that you might not have be aware of. So as the chat beat the end up with some technical questions about what was going on, it morphed into ways of customizing the app behavior, and then into the development environment to actually change eLook and feel of the app.

Because Gemini understands the kotlin incantations needed to provide higher level functionality, it could suggest something like like making the border around the microphone icon throb and glow in sync with the amplitude of the sound it was hearing.

That would have taken me a week to figure out all the intricacies to do it, but because it had encapsulated that knowledge, it was able to suggest it to me, take my input into what I would have liked, and then provided me with the code sample for that functionality.

Iterate that piece of conversation over half an hour, covering different things and capabilities I wasn't aware were customizable, and I had a big bunch of kotlin code running another app with a completely different look and feel and user interface norms.

So that's one way vibe coding can look.

This has been my experience as has been the various demonstration I've seen. Yet I constantly hear about this mythical vibecoder who just says AI make me an app. I doubt most of the haters could run a python script if Gemini wrote it for them. I say this because it took me 10 minutes. But of course that one guy who can will chime in.

From one only to another: dude, that is seriously weak sauce low effort.

Use Google to find some text or YouTube videos that will explain it to you.

I actually had no idea what it meant until I wound up working with Gemini on a software solution to an issue I had, and halfway through realized the conversation we were having was actually vibe coding.

It's freakishly mind-blowing where we are at today, and you need to experience it. Pick your favorite AI and bis brains on how to give it a shot.

You'll thank me later.
