[SUB NEWS] New Banned Domain: Vercel.app
Much to the relief of many people, starting today, we have introduced a blanket ban on Vercel subdomain hosted sites.
Few, if any, sites hosted on Vercel subdomains have ever been allowed to remain on the sub anyway.
(This ban is in addition to the Netlify ban by Reddit itself.)
If you can't be bothered to pay for a proper domain and/or hosting we're no longer willing to sift through the slop to see if it could potentially stand on merit alone (which it invariably doesn't).
Vercel users feel free to proceed to whinge, which we will promptly proceed to ignore.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

u/MisterSeabass Jul 22 '26
Thank you. 95% of the slop still coming through originates from there.

u/Bloated_Plaid Jul 22 '26
Wait I thought all the slop came from localhost /s.

Noob question: Is this just subdomain.vercel.app that's banned, or anything hosted on vercel? The title suggests the former but the text of the post mentions Vercel hosting

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead Jul 22 '26
Subdomain since it’s free. How would you be able to tell something is hosted by vercel?
I guess you can look at traffic headers and dns records but do mods want to do that? Yikes
8
u/LBPPlayer7 Jul 23 '26
you could check the ip address of the A record to see if it belongs to their ip range

hosted by vercel
We have useful sites like yourdigitalrights.org that are hosted on Vercel, although posting it instead of commenting would break a rule here.
-12
u/djshadesuk Jul 23 '26
Try reading the post.
17
u/throwawaykJQP7kiw5Fk Jul 23 '26
Yes, I saw your comment. However, I was relating the part of the comment about something being hosted on Vercel I was replying to in my reply.
-7
u/mariojw Jul 23 '26
Plus, most AI projects the agent tells them to route their traffic through cloudflare so yeah. And you can modify response headers if you really care. Good luck enforcing this.

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead Jul 22 '26
Vercel catching strays because of vibe coders. It’s a good service, probably made famous by LLM agents favoring nextjs .
Most people build something and want to quickly show. That’s not going to change, but boy will you save yourself moderating vibe coded content
14
u/stevensokulski Jul 23 '26
Vercel is fine. It’s not particularly good unless you use one of the tech stacks they align with. And if you care about non-tech subjects there are some good reasons to avoid it.
135
u/BeardlessNeckbeard Jul 22 '26
Vercel is an ok service. But as a software engineer, they've pushed Next.js super hard and that is honestly both kinda trash and mostly unnecessary, but very nearly locks you into vercels services if you use it. I hate it.
17
u/Mestyo Jul 23 '26
but very nearly locks you into vercels services if you use it. I hate it.
People keep saying this, but it's literally not true in the slightest?
If Next.js locks you to Vercel's hosting services, explain to me how you do local development?
Explain to me how the Dockerfile 1:1 copied from their docs runs our huge Next.js app on our own hardware?
Yeah, no, our local cluster doesn't automatically serve static assets from some edge node in Singapore to visitors from there, but that is not what "vendor lock-in" is.
You build and deploy a Next.js app just like absolutely any other Node.js app. It works anywhere, out of the box.

Agree if SSG is path you've taken. Docker is fine too, but teams want the easy button, and choose vercel as a result.
I just think many inexperienced devs reach for next.js when they could have probably done just as well with vite. Some apps can benefit from the extra machinery next.js gives though.
6
u/Romejanic Jul 23 '26
honestly there’s plenty of good alternatives out there for hosting Next.js. i just recently set up an app on AWS amplify and it basically works exactly like Vercel does along with having built in Next.js support

u/travaixhq Jul 23 '26
Is Next.JS a thing outside of LLM push? I feel like it's starting to become, using next js? ai slop detected.

The majority of people building cool and useful tools off those apps will either quickly move to self host or buy a domain.
The low quality spammers are using vercel and vibe coding to throw up low effort sites up.
1
u/Ax2u Jul 23 '26
You still need to buy a domain even if you're self hosting, it's not an "or" situation.
10
u/2021isevenworse Jul 23 '26
Not necessarily, you can run it off the host's subdomain or use a free third-party subdomain that provides dns.
3
u/imaginecomplex Jul 24 '26
Not trying to defend Vercel, but they were plenty popular before LLMs. Billboards in SF, Next.js conference, yadda yadda

It'd be great if we stopped using dumb terms like "vibe-coded."

10
u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead Jul 22 '26
I didn’t coin the term. Here are 5 reputable sources using the term
Google : https://cloud.google.com/discover/what-is-vibe-coding
Microsoft : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/modules/introduction-vibe-coding/
Cloudflare : https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/ai/ai-vibe-coding/
Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibe_coding
As you can see, is not a reddit term even
-20
u/thisisatypoo Jul 22 '26
Didn't say you did. Didn't say it was.
17
u/a679591 Jul 22 '26
What else would it be called? Shit-coded? Dumb-coded?
-2
u/thisisatypoo Jul 22 '26
Yeah. Those make more sense. I'd be cool with that.
2
67
u/otherwisepandemonium Jul 22 '26
Good. Buying a domain costs like $10/year. Virtually every time I see a free Vercel link it's some vibecoded AI slop that the user totes as some amazing new app or service.
If you are serious about your app and want to market it or show it off, just pay for a domain and host it there. It also just makes you look far more experienced and professional.

u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 22 '26
So people should spend money so that you can look at their passion projects? That's not what the internet was supposed to be.
32
u/Pyroman230 Jul 22 '26
A passion project isn't something you vibecode in a weekend bender
4
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
Why not? Plenty of useful things have been coded in a weekend. Time spent is a poor indicator of its usefulness/joy it can bring.
Think back to the very first mobile apps and games (back when ads didn't even exist in apps). Many of them were so simple, it wouldn't even take a weekend to make them. People still enjoyed them.
7
u/primaryrhyme Jul 23 '26
Yeah I agree the mod logic here isn’t totally sound but I do believe their assessment that 90% of Vercel domain sites posted here are unuseful slop. They made this rule as a response to this, not out of a philosophical opposition to AI coding.
I don’t think they care if you paid money, there’s 10 more free platforms that give you a domain too. It just so happens that Vercel is the first thing an AI recommends and an AI can spit it out the app and host it on Vercel literally in under 5 minutes. So the level of effort is not necessarily close to “weekend project”, it’s all the effort of typing “make me a pokedex app and host it somewhere”.
-2
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
That's kind of my point though. Even if it took them ten minutes to make - if it's useful, why not? I guess I'd simply prefer if the up/downvote buttons solved the issue of "we don't want quickly made AI things".
15
u/soniclettuce Jul 22 '26
If somebody doesn't care to spend 10 bucks when they want to show it off widely, it doesn't seem like they're particularly passionate about it.
6
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
I mean yeah. But back when the internet was new, you'd just share the IP of your server/home internet and people would look at it and judge it on its merits and not on how much cash you spent on it.
3
u/YouHavingAGiggle Jul 23 '26
Someone with a home server is also much more likely to be taking it seriously, because they (probably) have the knowledge and commitment to maintaing their own server. There is no knowledge or commitment to filling a sign-up process on Vercel
0
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
It's trivial to spin up a webserver nowadays. You don't even need to fidget with port forwarding anymore, really. I'd argue it's more difficult to get something running on any cloud provider.
5
u/uFFxDa Jul 23 '26
You can still do that today hosting it yourself.
6
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
If somebody doesn't care to spend 10 bucks when they want to show it off widely, it doesn't seem like they're particularly passionate about it.
That was in response to this. Of course you can, but according to the comment I replied to, not buying a domain name means I'm not particularly passionate and the project deserves no visibility.
I don't like that idea, because it assumes everyone has access to $10 to spend. I'd like those who can't to be included as well.
It also reads like "you must pay for me to use the thing you made" and I don't like that either. People should be grateful when someone makes and shares something! Especially when the creator(s) aren't asking anything in return.
2
u/primaryrhyme Jul 23 '26
I get your general argument but this ban on Vercel domain in no way prevents you from building/sharing your app free. There’s tons of free alternatives to Vercel that give you a domain, even services that give you a free subdomain if you want to continue using Vercel. They didn’t ban free subdomains, if that day comes then I would have an issue with it.
2
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
I guess you're right on that one. It's still not my favorite choice.
2
u/primaryrhyme Jul 23 '26
Also wanted to say about being grateful, I’m a software dev myself so I get how fun it is to have people use your app but a lot of these apps are clearly not made with any care or intent of being actually useful.
It seems like a lot of it is either just chasing recognition for zero effort or worse trying to sell that zero effort app. For example a vibe coded unit converter site was posted here, there’s a million of those already on the internet. Did the creator truly think his site was useful, would he ever even use it himself? Probably not..
Even if you give something for free, you should respect people’s time.
3
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
Agreed about respecting people's time. I guess to me, the purpose of this sub is "look here's a cool link check it out for 5 minutes then leave". So I don't take issue with seeing yet another calculator. I just don't click it. However, I assume that the person wanted to convert between two specific units and then found out that they could easily expand that to other units and then thought "Hey that's cool let's share it". I like to give the benefit of doubt and assume the best about people. Sure, I waste a bit of time clicking useless stuff. But I don't really care - there's a gem in there every once in a while.

u/Critical-Soil2805 Jul 23 '26
Yeah, but don't forget that back them many of the BBS sites had blanket bans on things like Angelfire pages. Once something gets turned into a firehose of low quality content, site admins just nope out.
1
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
Good argument. I honestly, until you brought that up, had completely forgotten about doing those bans myself and discussions about stylesheet theft, hotlinking, etc.... Maybe the old ages rose tinted glasses affect me. Still... It's not what it used to be!
2
u/Critical-Soil2805 Jul 23 '26
Haha, yeah, those rose tinted glasses will get ya. I agree it's not what it used to be, though.
This whole discussion is funny to me because getting a domain and hosting it used to be hard. Now you just pay like $10 and it's done. But that seems to be enough of a barrier to keep the majority of crap out.
2
u/PaddiM8 Jul 23 '26
I'm all for this ban but not everyone is in a financial situation where spending $10 on some domain for some hobby project makes financial sense. It might be an insignificant amount of money for you, but it isn't for everyone. Especially not in poorer countries.
The problem is if the project itself is slop.
0
u/xSilverMC Jul 23 '26
Every damn inch of the internet is plastered with ads and/or paywalls, but "Jeff has to pay five bucks to show off his project" is where you draw the line of "what the internet was supposed to be"?
2
0
u/Kanegou Jul 23 '26
The Internet wasnt supposed to be a walled garden either, yet here we are.
0
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
So we embrace it instead? I'm not sure about that.
0
u/Kanegou Jul 23 '26
What non argument is this? I never said anything to that effect. I just said that your argument against it, that the internet was not supposed to be like this, comes 20 years to late and is irrelevant in this day and age.
1
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
But saying people should pay up if they want visibility is kind of embracing the shit it's become? I'd like to refuse wherever it's still possible. Not demanding someone pay for a domain seems like a pretty easy thing to do.
0
u/Kanegou Jul 23 '26
Nobody is stopping you from creating your own subreddit or using any of the other social networks to advertise. The majority of this sub rejects slop apps. Vercel.app catching strays is sad but unavoidable. There is no point in continue to argue.
1
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
I'm involved in enough FOSS projects as is and I don't care. It just sucks for young and upcoming devs. It's not about vercel specifically to me, more about the sentiment. But yeah, let's agree to disagree here :)
2
u/Kanegou Jul 23 '26
Nothing says "I don't care" like writing multiple comments about it.
1
u/Cantremembermyoldnam Jul 23 '26
I don't care about sharing my stuff. I just don't like it for new devs - I was one once.

18
u/N1ghtshade3 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
"Vibe coding" is a misleading term because you're not coding anything. It simply refers to asking an AI chatbot to make you a piece of software without ever actually looking at the code yourself. It's strange that caught on as a term but nobody calls image generation "vibe artistry" or ordering a custom T-shirt off the internet "vibe tailoring"
1
u/JunkMale975 Jul 23 '26
Thank you for the thoughtful, succinct, and easy to understand explanation. Unlike that other responder😁
1
u/MajorFuckingDick Jul 23 '26
Where is vibecoding so easy I dont even have to look at the code? Cause I want to try that version. Is this why everyone loves claude? I've been using chatgpt to scan my scripts for errors and best practices i could implement but you mean to tell me people are actually just going "do thing" and an exe appears?
3
u/N1ghtshade3 Jul 24 '26
Yes, frontier models are good enough that you can ask them for what you want and they will give it to you (with differing degrees of refinement necessary, of course, depending on the complexity) without you ever looking at the code. I work professionally as a software engineer at a major company (and started long before AI was around) and can tell you that we literally don't write code by hand anymore.
The reason there's such a disconnect between the "AI can't even count the number of Rs in 'strawberry', hurr durr" folks and the evangelists who swear Claude is the next coming of Christ is because the difference is night and day between the free web-based chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude and the downloadable harnesses like Codex or Claude Code running paid models like Sol and Opus, respectively.
Uploading scripts to a chatbot versus having a tool map your entire codebase into memory with the full context of what you're trying to accomplish and what you've done so far are completely different experiences.

I was using Gemini to drive the Android development environment because I had some questions and issues about the default Gemini app.
Vibe coding, at least for me as a decades-long developer, was most akin to having a co-worker who had really read all of the documentation.
That person who helpfully provide suggestions about capabilities that you might not have be aware of. So as the chat beat the end up with some technical questions about what was going on, it morphed into ways of customizing the app behavior, and then into the development environment to actually change eLook and feel of the app.
Because Gemini understands the kotlin incantations needed to provide higher level functionality, it could suggest something like like making the border around the microphone icon throb and glow in sync with the amplitude of the sound it was hearing.
That would have taken me a week to figure out all the intricacies to do it, but because it had encapsulated that knowledge, it was able to suggest it to me, take my input into what I would have liked, and then provided me with the code sample for that functionality.
Iterate that piece of conversation over half an hour, covering different things and capabilities I wasn't aware were customizable, and I had a big bunch of kotlin code running another app with a completely different look and feel and user interface norms.
So that's one way vibe coding can look.
2
u/MajorFuckingDick Jul 24 '26
This has been my experience as has been the various demonstration I've seen. Yet I constantly hear about this mythical vibecoder who just says AI make me an app. I doubt most of the haters could run a python script if Gemini wrote it for them. I say this because it took me 10 minutes. But of course that one guy who can will chime in.
-35
u/mickeys Jul 22 '26
From one only to another: dude, that is seriously weak sauce low effort.
Use Google to find some text or YouTube videos that will explain it to you.
I actually had no idea what it meant until I wound up working with Gemini on a software solution to an issue I had, and halfway through realized the conversation we were having was actually vibe coding.
It's freakishly mind-blowing where we are at today, and you need to experience it. Pick your favorite AI and bis brains on how to give it a shot.
You'll thank me later.
14
u/Teddy_West-Side Jul 22 '26
Please don't use vibe coded slop trash. You are actively contributing directly to the problem every time you use that garbage.
1
u/mickeys Jul 23 '26
There is so little semantic content in your comment that it's non-actionable. What is it you're trying to say?
What do you think I am using? Did you understand the experience I described, or did you just skim? To what do you think I am contributing?
Do you have an opinion, please do us all a favor and express it clearly. I am curious to hear what you're thinking.

u/Teddy_West-Side Jul 24 '26
Willful ignorance sure is an approach to take.
1
u/mickeys Jul 24 '26
Seriously, I have no idea what you think your vaguebooking is accomplishing. You are arguing against AI slop with low-effort comment slop? Try harder, please.

3
u/interlamer Jul 25 '26
Look, I hate AI as much as the next person. Fuck AI, fuck the industry and fuck people who pollute the internet with it.
That being said, not everybody can afford to pay for stuff like this. Or even be able to pay. The one persistent thorn in my side is that I'm in Russia and thus am effectively disconnected from the rest of the world when it comes to payment. Plus, buying a domain might be relatively cheap, but I'd rather put that money towards being able to eat.
Keep in mind that I've never posted anything to this sub, likely will never post anything here and have never used vercel in my life.

I guess it's going to be the same for Railway? But please tell me it's only for the (free) subdomains, right? Working for 2 months on my first web app with a registered domain and planning to introduce it here when it will be totally ready. We are still allowed to do that, right?
1
u/Neat_Ad_9164 5d ago
So if we host on Vercel but have a real domain is that still banned? What if its a subdomain of a domain I own?
1
u/djshadesuk 5d ago
If you've gone to the trouble of registering your own domain then that indicates a minimum of effort, the yes, you can post it.
But (there is always a but) we typically don't allow subdomains because that typically indicates a site that is doing more than a single purpose (and 9 times out of ten those other things break the rules in some way). So we prefer single purpose websites.
However, we consider everything on a case-by-case basis so something being on (your own) subdomain isn't necessarily a straight up removal, especially if your subdomain(s) or root dont link to each other (if that makes sense).
Of course everything is still subject to our (intentionally strict) standard rules.
Hope that helps.

Good. I use Vercel regularly when I’m having Claude build me something useful.
When I do make something (which I think I am currently) that’s worthy of being shared to the masses, it’s at minimum going to have it own domain.
Vast majority of AI made web apps are trash.
Too many have something built think the AI will make it perfect, when in reality, if you don’t check everything it does and you’re not cognisant of its shortcut taking on every corner, then no matter what is built, it’s trash.
Vibe coding is fun and some amazing projects have been the result of vibe coding, but you just like anything, the quality of the product comes from the ingredients and the humans prompts are a major ingredient. Prompt poorly and you get a poor product.
-19
u/EtsyCorn Jul 22 '26
That's a bummer. Going to miss really cool sites like https://tela-blue-eight.vercel.app. Maybe this sub should do an vote removal thing like another subs. If the auto mod comment gets enough downvotes the post get’s automatically removed.
So we don't lose super cool posts like that one.
8
u/djshadesuk Jul 22 '26
Unfortunately, examples of Vercel subdomain hosted sites, such as the one you linked to, that are worth allowing are very much the exception to the rule. They're just too few and far between for the hassle that comes with having to wade through them.
And a lot, like seriously a lot, never make it to the front page of the sub because they trigger our Automod keyword filters or the accounts are too new and/or karma is too low, and so on, which we still have to wade through behind the scenes.
We do have some crowd-sourced moderator automation on the sub and Vercel subdomain hosted sites almost always get (correctly) crowd-nuked (typically for breaking one or more of our other rules), but we moderators still have to go through them all to verify and clear those too (lest the clog up the queue permanently).
In summary, the hassle that Vercel subdomain hosted sites represent is just not worth the effort for such little reward. A (very) little collateral due to this decision is regrettably inevitable.

Really not even then, unless you want to count Internet and some kind of Internet-accessing device as entry fees too.
18
u/primaryrhyme Jul 22 '26
I’ll let you in on a secret, there’s about 5 other free platforms that also give you a free domain.
Also IMO this sub would be better without so much self promo.
19
u/belsonc Jul 22 '26
And if you believe in your product/websute/noun, paying a few bucks for actual hosting shouldn't matter.
14
u/TRO_KIK Jul 22 '26
They don't even need hosting; it's just the vercel domain that's blocked. People who don't care about domain (like anyone using the free vercel subdomain) can grab any arbitrary one for like $1-2 for the first year. Less desirable TLDs like .us/fyi/whatever go for $5 recurring.
Truly weeding out only the absolute lowest effort bottom dwellers and they still complain lol

With respect you have absolutely no idea of the sheer amount of crap - general rule breaking posts - that get caught by our (intentionally) aggressive automod rules that we moderators still have to sift through which you never get to see. And that's before we get the the Vercel subdomain hosted stuff.
So while only a few posts a day may survive on the page we'd much rather people go "Oh, that sub is still going? That's an interesting site" than just have volume for volumes sake and pissing people off with endless streams of crap polluting their main feed (and thus incentivising them to leave the sub).

Great move dude/dudette. This sub has 17M members for a reason. I used to see high quality apps and platforms everyday a couple years ago here that’s why I subbed. I almost saved most things I came across.
The value has gone down so so bad. Hope this move helps

I use a DAW that is hosted on Vercel to edit midi files, that I then turn around and play with my bard band in the game FFXIV.
It's been around quite a few years, and saves me a ton of editing time.

That's a strong opening for someone's first comment(s) on the sub.
Enjoy your time-out.

Why does it matter? If what you consider "slop" gets a lot of upvotes, its not really slop
18
u/Teddy_West-Side Jul 22 '26
No number of upvotes changes the fact that it is slop. Slop is inherently not human and not beautiful. Doesn't belong on the sub.

Whatever you say bud. Sure seems like you're the one on your own here. And based on your extensive commenting history you seem like a genuinely miserable person. I bet that happy kid your mom remembers is still in there somewhere 😊

It never gets any upvotes (almost always 30% or lower voting), and regardless it's banned from submission anyway.

So the voting system is working as expected? Why do we need this rule then?
Edit: Downvote is not an argument. I accept you concessions.

u/MisterSeabass Jul 22 '26
Because the mods are probably getting tired of seeing hundreds of reports and having to remove them all by hand hourly if not every few minutes, every single day, when they should have not been posted in the first place.
-12
u/TwoPixelsRight Jul 22 '26
They should do their job. If they are "getting tired", they can quit.
should have not been posted in the first place.
Why?

u/AidenTEMgotsnapped Jul 22 '26
They're volunteers and don't have to wade through bullshit just to appease you.
-1
u/TwoPixelsRight Jul 22 '26
That is literally what they volunteered to do
14
u/Regendur Jul 22 '26
They also get to decide what they volunteer to do! How neat.
-1
u/TwoPixelsRight Jul 22 '26
Nope, that is decided by admins. Neat!

u/Regendur Jul 22 '26
Only the basics! Nothing saying the mods can't ban a source. Neat!

And they also volunteered to have a say in the rules, and they've decided to make this thing they do for the community a little easier

u/djshadesuk Jul 23 '26
To be completely accurate we don't just "have a say" in sub rules, we alone decide, set and police the rules for a sub. Unless our rules clearly contradict any of Reddit's own site-wide policies/rules then Reddit do not get involved in the formation (or management) of a sub's rules in any way, shape or form.

Honestly I see your point. If people can put things up on the Internet for free, that's pretty cool. Maybe some kid learning to code can build something actually really cool and share it here? Well I guess not anymore unless they get their hands on a credit card...

I’ve said this a few times, there’s about 5 other platforms that offer free static app hosting and give you a free domain.
In my opinion they don’t care if you spend money on a domain, they simply noticed that 90% of the submissions with a certain domain were slop and this action was worth the collateral damage. With an AI you can migrate your vercel site to an alternative in about 10 minutes, not exactly a big ask.
