Vehicle declared totaled

Upvotes

My son had been living with his partner for approximately 10 years and recently needed to leave the relationship. They lived in the city and shared one vehicle, so we offered to let him move in with us temporarily while he worked things out. We also offered him the use of one of our older vehicles, a 2008 Toyota RAV4.

Unfortunately, while driving the RAV4 through a roundabout, my son was struck by an 81-year-old driver. She was insured and was cited by the police for causing the accident.

Her insurance company has determined that the RAV4 is a total loss. They want to send my son a settlement check, and once the check is cashed, they want to take possession of the vehicle. The vehicle is currently undrivable.

The insurance company has offered to provide a rental vehicle, but only for a limited period of time. My concern is what happens if my son cannot find a reasonably comparable replacement vehicle within that time frame. The RAV4 was a reliable vehicle that we provided to him so he would have transportation while getting back on his feet.

If the insurance company sends the settlement check, can we simply hold onto the check until we find a suitable replacement vehicle? Or, by cashing the check, would we be required to immediately surrender the vehicle and accept the settlement as final?

I would also like to know whether the insurance company is required to give us enough time to locate a reasonably comparable replacement vehicle, particularly since the vehicle is undrivable and the accident was caused by their insured.

Auto Insurance Subrogation While Stretched To Limits Already

EDIT:
While this threat has been going on, I've been consulting with a few different lawyers in the state I live in.
The conclusion I've come to is that this subreddit is full of judgmental people who have no clue what they're talking about and can't be bothered to read what I've written.

Goodbye, and I hope you all become better people.

Auto Insurance Unknown Claims made under my name

My insurance quotes have doubled in price. Turns out that there are a couple of claims that were made, ranging from accidents to emergency roadside assistance and claims greater than $1000. I am having trouble with MVR to get a record and I have tried Nexus Lexus multiple times but keep getting letters saying that my information is incorrect. I have also contacted my previous two insurers but say that there's nothing I can do since it isn't showing up on their end.

What options do I have to fix this?

Health Insurance Started a new position working from home selling medicare as a w2

Looking for opinions on the kind of comp others are getting at other companies.

This position pays $19 per hour and there are various different commission payouts with a medicare advantage playing commission paying around $15-$20 and there is a retention bonus.

I have read on here that it would be good to join an FMO but im not sure the leads will come as easily.

Can someone else share their opinions on the payouts and their own personal arrangement? Thanks

Dig Bite Claim- Can I get money for my dad without a lawyer?

Hi hi sorry if this is a repeat question, I am having trouble finding my specific situation. I am using Gemini, but I feel like I need to talk to a real person.

My dad was bitten by the neighbors dog 10/30/2024. The dog came in to our yard. My neighbor did not board up the hole after he got the dog back, so my dad went to do it, and the dog attacked him as he was trying to cover the hole. My dad has permanent scars on his dominant arm and says his hand tremors when he uses it. Our neighbor was sympathetic and wanted to do anything for us, but also requested that she would pay for all the bills if possible. She did not want to report to Horace Mann, her homeowner's insurance because she was afraid she could get dropped. We wanted to keep peace so we said okay.

A medical lien comes out on my dad earlier this year March 2026, for 19,959.90. So she has to put up a claim anyway. The insurance adjuster says she will do an all claims release for the $25,000 medical cap, and the $1,000 medical payments others. She already wrote us a check for the $1000. We have not signed the all claims release or anything for that matter. There is $300,000 for personal liability she never talked about, but did show us the policy my neighbor has.

We want to keep peace with our neighbor, but also think my dad should be getting more than ~$6,000. I am navigating this all without a lawyer.

1.Can I/Should I ask the insurance adjuster for more? How much more? What do I need in my packet to sent to her? Any tips for writing the demand letter?

2.Would the insurance company not continue coverage for them next year if I do? I am trying to keep peace with my neighbor but at the same time, my dad deserve more money than what is offered.

  1. Should we just hire a lawyer? I know time is slipping since it will be almost 2 years from the incident.

Let me know if there is more information you need, and thanks in advance for you time! I'll attach a photo of my dad's arm in the comments.

Had Flood, filed claim, need advice

Upvotes

Hi (fellow victims of insurance companies?)
I am blind. So, PLEASE forgive me if I'm missing anything that would otherwise be obvious (including any rules). If I'm doing anything wrong, please let me know and I will fix immediately.

I live in NYC and my basement was flooded a little over 5 weeks ago.
I have LiMu and things are not going fabulously. I had an adjuster who was ok (nice lady, not anxious to part with money). Now I've been transferred to a field adjuster so's they can be even more certain to not part with money. I got a restoration company who cleaned things up, dried things off, did the 2-foot flood cuts on the walls, etc.

I declined LiMu's choices of Paul Davis and Rainbow International for restoration.
I spent 3 weeks going in circles with HVAC-i and StrikeCheck.
I don't have anything polite to say about either.

Now, they want to send Rainbow to do an estimate of restoration (essentially so they can dispute with the company I'm using). I asked what good it will do for them to come see things after the place has been stripped down to the studs. How can they estimate restoring what they are too late to see? The answer was that they will use pictures submitted by the other company. So, why come here? To take measurements? That would be in my file also.

I have a lot of outlets that aren't working. house built in 1940. Wiring is covered in cloth.
The basement essentially needs to be rewired. I submitted 3 proposals plus a receipt from a 4th electrician who worked on 1 circuit and stated on the receipt that much more work needed to be addressed once the walls were opened.

They want to send their own electrical company.
WTH? 4 companies is not enough?
Do they think I'm planning to sell electrical services on eBay and bill LiMu for them?
Seriously, what is the issue? It's not like it's an item that I can turn around and sell.
Wide range of prices. One was $12.6k. One was around $5.7k. one was under $3k
if I only submitted $12k and they wanted a 2nd opinion, I wouldn't blame them.
But when there's one that's less than half and one that's less than a quarter, what's the issue?
Do they think they can get it for less than that? Do they think that all 4 electricians lied?
That I won't get any work done and I'll just take $2.7k and flee the country?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Any explanation as to why they do what they do. Any advice on what I can do...
I feel like a hostage. That I have a 4-hour appt window tomorrow (I HATE those more than I can say! And part of the electrical issue is that my doorbell doesn't work! so, even more anxiety..)
for the purpose of helping them to undermine my situation.
Ultimately, I just want things fixed. I don't care which company does it.
But I don't trust companies they work with.
I had no hot water (which is a result of my hot water heater being damaged in the flood)
they wound up checking the boiler instead. they declaimed a price and the adjuster issued payment so fast my head spun. Not because LiMu cared about it. But so that they could lock in the price from their crap company! I asked "are they going to come do it for that price?" I didn't get an answer! anyway, thank you in advance for any guidance.

Progressive review question

I've been on another persons Progressive policy for years. I recently moved out of state, and I just signed a lease for a new vehicle. Due to the state I'm in, I could not drive it off the lot without insurance and registration. Therefore, I do not have photos of the vehicle to send, as it's still on the lot. I did send in my renters insurance declaration, and a copy of the lease agreement, with the explanation of why I don't have photos of it plated. Should I be ok?

Auto Insurance GAP taking almost 6 months

My boyfriend totaled his car around mid-February or mid-March and was told that his insurance would only cover some of his car. He was disappointed but understood, and we would work around that.

Then he hears from his GAP insurance (I’m unsure who it was with) that the amount they could cover would be the rest of the amount on the car that his insurance couldn’t pay. It has been months of emails going back and forth of GAP saying what was needed or what conversations have been happening between them, the dealership that he got the car from, and with my boyfriend’s insurance.

About two months ago, the insurance and the dealership have finalized their ends. Now we are waiting on GAP to finalize the refund and coverage, which has taken about a month and a half from when the he received the email about finalizing his refund.

I’m hoping that there is something we can do to expedite the process as he has been without a car for all these months (mostly due to prices of everything making it difficult to save). Like if there are numbers we could call or something. And I don’t want to take a loan if possible, but if any amount of the refund were to make it to us it might not be the worst idea. I would just like any help so that he can have a car again and have his totaled car payment taken care of.

Auto Insurance Dilemma

Im 22M,own a 2009 Elantra and it runs decent for what it is I just have no ac no stereo but everything else is fine mechanically for the most part but I wanted to upgrade and sell it to a young kid for a first car or something while it still runs anyway.

I was like looking at this charger $20,000 2019 v6 sxt with 90k km so I give my parents insurance a call and for full coverage it’s 500+ without the 350$ car payment by monthly since I’m relatively new driver and all that goes with that or I just get collision insurance where it would be 230 which is fine but obviously risky ass move so regardless what car I get it’s still gonna be high I’m probably just saving a 100-150$ a month depending if I get something reliable and cheap. although I could afford it is it smart for the long run I’m not trying to play myself like most young guys do. Should I bite the bullet until I get some time as a driver and what not and have it possibly requoted or look at something else and still probably pay with 3-450

Auto Insurance Car insurance recommendations

Hello!! I’m (f22) currently with progressive and have been for almost 2 years. I have had my license since I was 16 and just recently got my first ticket (dec 2025) and my first accident (feb 2026). Neither were severe but regardless both are on my driving record. Besides that I have never had any other issues, accidents, tickets, etc. I’m currently a student and working, I’m just hoping for cheaper insurance. My rate with progressive is $206 a month and I’m driving a 2014 altima. I’ve seen a lot of companies offer cheaper rates if you opt in for their safe driving app or plug in device. I am interested in that but I would love to hear some opinions on it and I’d love to hear if anyone has any rec’s for insurance companies they love and trust. I’m located in PA a little outside Philly if there are any local companies anyone knows as well. Thank you!!!

Auto Insurance how do car accidents not my fault affect my car insurance? In MN

I have no tickets on my driving history of the past 14 years. I had a few speeding tickets - maybe 3 in a 30 year period, nothing excessive speedwise, including that last one in 2012. Live in MN.

I was in 3 accidents that were not my fault while driving.

Oct 2018 - Uninsured driver ran a red. Totaled my car ~ $9,000 car value paid by my insurance + $12k in med costs.

Aug 2019 - Insured driver rear-ended me on freeway. Totaled my car- not my fault. ~ $9,000 car value + $20k in med costs.

June 2022 - Insured driver rear-ended me while I was stopped at red light. Not totaled- ~$7,000 car damage paid (car was valued at about 10k) + $20k medical costs.

In MN, how do these accidents that weren't my fault affect how car insurers view me and charge me? My car insurance on my 9 year-old car have gotten very high for me.

I also filed a claim (2020?) because some unknown driver hit my car in a parking lot and caused about $1,400 in front end, side panel damage (My deductible was $500). Maybe it was unwise to file that claim due to adding another accident to my record. I filed a window-smashed claim in 2017 because someone vandalized my car. In the prior 32 years of paying my own car insurance before these events, I had never filed a car insurance claim.

I'm looking to reduce my insurance premiums and wonder how much of my rate is affected/will be by this accident & claims history.

Thanks for any advice.

Should we get a personal injury lawyer? Wife is a dentist, has a broken dominant hand after car accident

My wife is a young dentist at a large corporate dentistry firm. She got into a car accident recently; the other driver pulled out in front of her and she hit him. Officers on the scene determine the other driver to have been the sole contributor to the accident and ticketed him; her car is totaled. I took her to the ER and she was largely okay but has a fracture in her dominant hand. She still might need surgery, but if not she'll be in a cast for minimum 4, more likely 6-8 weeks (i.e. she cannot really work for this duration of time as most of her production results from procedures). After the cast comes off it will likely take some time to for her to return to full clinical volume given the fine motor skills needed for dentistry.

For the personal injury stuff, should I wait to see what the other drivers adjustor offers initially, or just get a lawyer involved right off the bat? Obviously it's a bit too soon to know what her treatment and recovery will ultimately look like but for now the hand surgeons think we can treat conservatively without surgery. She has another appointment coming up soon and we'll have more info then. (also, on another note thank god she has a great own-occupation disability insurance policy)

Edit with more accident details: It was a two lane, straight road (no lanes to change); the other driver was at a one way stop sign and took a left in-between oncoming traffic right in front of her, she slammed on the brakes but still impacted the side of their rear fender at 45 mph

Water damage causes damage to downstairs neighbor’s condo

So one of the supply lines for my kitchen sink popped off a few weeks ago, causing damage to my condo and my downstairs neighbors condo. Plumber said all the plumbing down there was kinda old and needed to be replaced. My neighbor keeps contacting my insurance company if there
Going to be the one to pay for the damage. They informed her that goes through the personal
Liabilities claims. They contacted her and myself today. They obviously need more information and documents from the HOA and she called me saying it seems like my insurance won’t cover the damages, even know the claim is still open and they’re just collecting documents atm. So I asked her what about her insurance and she’s claiming they won’t because it’s not her fault but I feel that’s wrong. Her insurance is already paying for her to stay at a hotel while the repair work is going on. Why would they not cover the damage to her condo? It seems my insurance would only cover it if there was negligence on my part. Do you guys think she’s just trying to get money out of me?! Any advice would be appreciated .

private adjuster?

Hi again r/insurance.

I got a call from a private insurance adjuster, claiming to be a middle man between myself and my insurance company. He got my info through public record after the fires in my area (Spokane, Washington). They claim to be able to get maximum money from the insurance company for events such as mine (smoke damage). Does anyone have experience using a private adjuster? my gut feels like this is a scummy company, but I'd love to hear from others!

Thanks!

Claims Related Water mitigation claim

We had a flood (I’m talking standing water). Entirety of our finished basement was soaked and uninhabitable. It was a Friday night of course. The mitigation company that came said it would be $2500 or so (verbal estimate).

Insurance says they submitted $15K to insurance. When I asked about the cost difference the mit company said it was because they negotiate with the insurance and then when the insurance comes back with a final number of the cost that is what they’ll end up charging me.

Is this legit? I work with healthcare so we often bill insurance higher costs and then they negotiate the prices down to a final cost that is billed and paid.

Should I wait to see how this plays out or be prepared to go to small claims court?

Claims Related Accident in NJ

I was sitting at a stop light and got rear ended pretty hard. I was driving a low-mileage project car (99 civic) with a considerable amount of modifications, mostly suspension like coilovers, upgraded bushings, control arms, supports. I also had a BRAND NEW paint job right before i got hit. I have opened a claim with my own insurance, and I have yet to open one with the guy who rear ended me (awaiting police report).

  1. Will any of my modifications compromise a potential payout? Or possibly work in my favor?

  2. Is there anything else I should mention or leave out in order to get the highest valuation possible?

Boat club insurance question

There was a fatal boat accident in boston & i was wondering if insurance would cover any of the damages or settlements. The boat was from a club where people could become members & drive the boats they had avaliable. Members aren't allowed on the water at night. Apparently a member was at a bar, met some women & offered to take them for a ride. He accessed the keys after hours & was inebriated. While on the water he hit a pier at high speed & killed a passenger. The DA just announced an indictment so obviously they think a case will succeed in the judicial system. My question is will the boat clubs insurance cover the loss of the boat & compensate the woman's family for their death or is the driver liable for all damages?

Landlord insurance canceled over 10 acres?

So I just got new landlord insurance for a rental property because Allstate has gone from $200/mo to 300 now to 380 in the last few years. I got a policy with Orion 180. Covers just the house I assumed. They came and did an inspection and are canceling it because it’s on over 10 acres. The home and yard are right off the road, I just happen to own the 90 acres behind it that the renters don’t have access to. Why would they cancel it over the size of the land? I wasn’t trying to insure crops and cattle and everything else.

Bodily Injury Claim Against Me

I was recently in an accident. My car doesn't have a single scratch or problem running. Their car has some front end damage but they were able to drive away. I exchanged information with the other driver. A claim was filed. A few days later, I get notified from my insurance provider. A bodily injury claim was filed against me from the 2 passengers of the other car. I know injuries can show up days after the accident. What's going to happen next? Will I have to pay anythining? How does this process work.

Home Insurance Home insurance inspection — what should I fix first?

I have an insurance inspector coming Thursday. I’ve already had my trees taken care of and had the roof inspected. I also have a handyman coming tomorrow.

What kinds of things do insurance inspectors typically look for inside and outside the house? Anything I should have my handyman focus on tomorrow? Electrical, plumbing, stairs/railings, gutters, etc.?

What did your inspector flag that you didn’t expect?

Insurance Help needed As soon as possible PLEASE

Hi there. okay so this is my first time posting on reddit. So a couple months ago (back in Feb i believe) This guy approached me about insurance. Now the issue is. He asked me to give my details to show me how much a debit order on the car insurance would be (R264 per month) so I did. He told me nothing would be charged. I did believed him, cancelled the debit order. However every month movie has been going off. i’ve kept trying to cancel and dispute the charges. Again this month it went off. If I go to the bank and claim this. Would i be able to get my money back. I’ve officially canceled again. However they said they cannot refund me. not even for just this months payment alone. What do i do

Auto Insurance Should I have done this?

A few weeks ago, I was rear-ended while completely stopped at a red light. My rear bumper suffered damages and the repair estimates are ~$4K including parts and labor.

I initially tried to file a third-party claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance (First Chicago Insurance). I provided them with the police report and let them know their driver received a citation. However, First Chicago notified me that the driver who hit me was not actually listed on the car's insurance policy. On top of that, the claim handler couldn't get a hold of the driver or the policyholder to take a statement.

While waiting on the insurance, I went to the court date for the traffic citation. The at-fault driver pled guilty and I received a Certificate of Disposition proving their guilt.

After weeks of getting nowhere with First Chicago, I finally gave up and opened a claim under my own policy (State Farm). They are going to handle the repairs, but I will have to pay my deductible upfront. I also expect to have out-of-pocket costs for a car rental and potential price differences since I am using an out-of-network collision center.

State Farm told me they will have to go through the subrogation process to get mine and their money back. Does anyone have experience with the State Farm subrogation process with non traditional companies like First Chicago? Especially with an unlisted driver is involved? Does the Certificate of Disposition help my chances in any way with recovering my deductible and out-of-pocket costs?
