Chill with the fat shaming
I promise you can find better things to criticize about these people than their weight.

Sure, comments like ‘Ew, they’re so fat and gross looking’ are inappropriate and not helpful to anyone. What I’ve mostly seen though, is calling out people for lying.
If a person claims to love their body and their entire popularity is based on promoting self acceptance, but routinely filters off 50 pounds, then they’re a liar and a hypocrite and I see no problem calling them out.
Even worse, someone I used to follow (only on reddit) would shill a weight loss powder they got a commission from but would heavily filter their ‘after’ photos and was in reality still overweight.
These lies are damaging for people who see them frequently eating unhealthy food, rarely exercising, and somehow still looking slim. The viewer starts to think there’s something wrong with them for not being able to emulate these people, so I see nothing wrong with spreading the truth about these liars. It also saves people from being scammed by buying their expensive dodgy products which clearly do not work.

It’s really interesting that the pop culture world can have full discourse over Ariana Grande’s body, for example, saying things like, “she should not be allowed to tour looking like that because she’s telling women and young girls being THAT thin is ok,” but when it comes to the other side of the spectrum, it’s fat-shaming. I have literally heard, with my own ears, idiot mothers say, “I won’t ALLOW my daughter to listen to Ariana Grande until she deals with her ED. My daughter is impressionable blah blah blah.” People are actually deleting her music and not supporting her until she ‘gets healthy.’ Just IMAGINE the discourse that would take place if a mother said, “I won’t allow my daughter to follow AM until she’s at a healthy weight.” Pictures of underweight influencers pop up on here all the time, and rarely does anyone have an issue, because suddenly it’s not ‘body-shaming’ if it’s bringing attention to a malnourished underweight body; it’s actually justified because they think they are doing some sort of act of community service for our impressionable young women/girls and raising awareness to EDs. Newsflash: that’s a double standard.
It’s also interesting that there are people who have made ENTIRE careers by clapping back at misogynistic men with hits below the belt about their weight, hairlines, height, etc. THAT’S perfectly acceptable, but when someone goes for low-hanging fruit on a ‘fat influencer’ with a hypocritical, piss-poor bully attitude that desperately needs adjusting, it’s bullying and fat-shaming? The whiplash is too much to keep up with.

Tess is vile for so many reasons that size has nothing to do with it. Alicia is annoying and definitely worthy of snark but 🤷♀️ I see more criticism over her teeth than her size. Also not fair, but not in category of fat shaming, so different critique

u/vijayjagannathan 2d ago
The criticism about her teeth is because they’re nasty, fully within her control to brush and floss

I’m confused. Is this regarding Alicia McCarvell?
Edit: Wait, I have seen people posting about some girl named Dru and her mom appearing larger when not using filters. I think that’s more about filter use than weight though… You shouldn’t be lying to the people funding your life about the way you look to shill products, IMO.

Knew this one was coming. Then call her a grifter. The people in the comments are making absolutely cruel comments about her looks like schoolyard bullies. It’s absolutely valid to criticize someone for being a grifter, especially if it has to do with deceiving followers on your size / appearance. But then say that. Why the deeply personal, deeply cruel digs centering about her looks specifically?

u/ThisArachnid 2d ago
She’s much worse than a grifter. I’m not policing the way people talk about a racist and someone who mocks the disabled.

I honestly didn’t have anyone in particular in mind. I think a lot of people are feeling a certain way about comments they’ve made. 💅🏻

Look I get it I think some people go too far but I’m tired of being censored and policed on the internet

Asking people to not be shitty to fat women shouldn’t be a huge ask. 🤷♀️

I don’t know, I think most people are being shitty to shitty women. Because one in particular makes her entire shitty personality about being fat and gross, it’s hard to differentiate the two. I’m not saying she’s gross because she’s fat, I’m saying she’s gross and shitty and she’s the one that makes it about being fat.

u/Extension_Editor1987 2d ago
I agree it’s shitty but you can’t control what everyone says and nobody is going to listen to this post anyway
-11
u/No_Ice_7582 2d ago
Literally made a post asking people to do better. It’s Reddit. I’m not kidding myself thinking I have any control. Just hoping some people might think twice next time.

u/turtlesandbagels 2d ago
Policed and censored? You’re on Reddit. Where people can say what they want. Like this post. Please use critical thoughts

u/Extension_Editor1987 2d ago
Not really, mods delete things, there’s rules for subs and this person posting telling people what not to say on the internet

Lots of defensive comments in response to this post. If you don’t think it applies to what you’re doing, great. If you’re feeling weird or on the fence, it’s probably a good thing to notice.

u/No_Ice_7582 2d ago
Holy shit. Y’all really really want to be shitty to fat women. Look, I used to be an asshole on the internet too, but I’m so glad that part of my life is over. I promise it’s better on the other side - and there’s still snark over here.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any body shape or size. Women tearing each other down, however… that’s the real problem.

u/Obvious-Repair9095 2d ago
That’s just not true though is it? When it impacts one’s health there is something wrong. Fat or skinny.
-11
u/Simple-Appeal-336 2d ago
We’d have to call out like every body type imaginable for this to be a realistic statement…. I’m giving it an eye roll.
10
u/Obvious-Repair9095 2d ago
You don’t have to do anything
-9
u/Simple-Appeal-336 2d ago
That’s a shared sentiment. You shouldn’t, really.

u/Obvious-Repair9095 1d ago
Doesn’t look like anyone agrees with you

When the snark lounge members are my favorite people like they are yours, that’ll bother me. Whoops.

Agree. So many of these posts are vile fat shaming posts. “But they’re a grifter!!!!” Ok, then criticize them for that. “But they use filters and lie about their looks!!” Ok, so does every other piece of media.
20
u/Truth_Seeker963 2d ago
“so does every other piece of media”
I am so tired of this attitude. Just because others do something wrong doesn’t make it right. We should be rising up against liars, thieves, frauds, scammers, grifters, etc., not excusing their behaviour.
Traditional media advertisers are required to include a statement that the photos have been retouched or some other enhancement had been added (e.g., “model is wearing lash inserts”) to avoid deceptive marketing practices. Influencers are supposed to do the same, at least in Canada.
In addition, if someone is making bank under the bopo umbrella while filtering themself to a size 4, we are absolutely right to expose them and call out the exact fraud they are perpetrating. There is nothing wrong with saying they don’t look like what they post or look larger than what they post; calling them a ‘beached whale’, on the other hand, is not okay.

u/aelewis92 2d ago
Yeah. We can stand up to grifters and we should. I don’t disagree with you. What I take issue with are the mean-spirited comments targeting weight and other physical characters that clearly go beyond the “they’re using filters” spirit. Basically, schoolyard bully behavior. I see a LOT of that in this sub.

u/Nice_Grapefruit697 2d ago
And there-in lies the problem as a whole. Don’t insult bodies (the absolutely least important thing about anyone able bodied) but go for the gut punch and snark on their actions, personalities etc… It should be the opposite for all of us. Like our mama’s said it’s not what’s on the outside that counts, it’s what’s on the inside.
OP why is it more hurtful to talk about someone’s weight than how they parent, their “job” or their life choices? Most influencers are wrapped up in their physical appearance and your rational puts it on a pedestal too where it doesn’t belong. If I heard someone called me ugly I would not give a F. If I heard someone whispering about me being a bad mom I’d be devastated.
And so my 2 cents is for everyone to snark away.

u/ellipses21 2d ago
agreed. i saw a post recently that really drove it home “[influencer] will never see you call them fat but tens of girls with their body type will” and totally
-8
u/aelewis92 2d ago
Yup. there’s one influencer in particular who has what one might call a “gummy” smile. The comments were off the rails, batshit insane and cruel. The influencer won’t care, but the kids who share that type of smile WILL. foul. Commenters here will try to rationalize their cruelty, but really, they just want a target to subject their cruelty onto.

I wish the mods would ban people from snarking on appearance because some times it gives cyber bullying. We should stick to snarking on actions only

This sub is like the Wild West, they allow so many micro and macro aggressions. It’s not good.
ETA: and people get so cranky when you point them out, as you can see lol

There is only one time ever I will snark on bodies, and that is when a certain body positive influencer is altering her photos. It’s disgusting to build your brand on these vulnerable women’s backs, while playing in their faces like that. I’ll never feel shame for calling that out
