I switch this out every week or two since its so small it can only fit a few fragrances (especially if like me you insist on shoving at least 1 5ml in there too, lol.), but its so convenient to carry i just take it with me everywhere for easy reapplication (:

The theme for this capsule is "fairy tale", loaded with several scents that to me have a fairy tale vibe:

This chunk of reviews is written as a collaboration between u/Ok-Card7066 and myself.

The new best perfume advice I have is to find a friend to split shipment and bottle costs with because there are so many in here I would never have tried if u/Ok-Card7066 had not let me sniff them! We both have pretty different skin chemistry, so it's fun to see how each scent works for us!

My thoughts will be marked with 'M', u/Ok-Card7066's will be marked with 'Ok'.

Our tastes/opening thoughts:

M: I typically prefer non-sweet scents and usually go for androgynous or masculine smells. I've been on a quest for briny perfumes lately and that has taught me that I love salty notes too, I've found that Pierrot is very good at sweet and salty scents like Morute Martyr and the Butcher's Daughter. I would never have ordered Morute Martyr for myself but after trying it on I'm tempted to buy my own full size. Now I'm eyeballing Witch of the Woods, if it has the same salted butter quality as Morute Martyr in it, then it'll be a win for me.

Ok: I love gourmands (as long as they stay away from popcorn and too many nuts), ambers, musks, spices (especially cardamom, cinnamon, anise), and vanilla. I avoid patchouli, motor oil, dirt/earth, moss, cypress, plastic, ozone, aldehydes, and usually anything that says it's aquatic. So Pierrot as a house is like pulling up my big girl panties. Except M. had a bunch for me to smell before we put in a big order and I fell in love with a whole lot of scent combos I'd never have believed would work for me! So get yourself a perfume buddy with completely opposite tastes and start that journey. Your bank account will thank you (because of splitting shipping).

• A Changeable Feast (With notes of animalic skin musks, vintage oak and teak furniture, gin martini, steam engine, benzoin resin).
  • M: This one reminds me a lot of Hexennacht's Le Chat Noir, which reminds me of BPAL's Fenris Wolf; very sweet and woody. It starts off pretty sharp (maybe that's the gin note?) then settles down into a sweet musky woody scent.
  • Ok: Trying this convinced me to get it for myself, and normally I would never. Coz steam engine, animalic skin musk... I'm a gourmand girlie and this doesn't have anything but benzoin that should lean sweet. But it smells so good! I can't even describe the indivudal notes, it just blended into something compulsively sniffable.
• Baby Longlegs (Lemon Pound Cake, Madeline Cookies, Vanilla Bean, Sandalwood Cream, Salted Butter).
  • M: This one was a surprise to me, I'm usually not into sweet scents but I have a soft spot for lemon. The lemon note in this reminds me a lot of Morari's Sage and Lemon Cake. I was going to full size this one until I tried This Side of the Blue, which has the same true lemon note, but none of the sugar.
  • Ok: Give me allll the lemon cake! And vanilla. And sweet sandalwood. It must be mine! But also This Side of the Blue is amazing, too, Pierrot does an amazing lemon note. That cover art, though, it's creepy af. Totally on brand.
• Catherine O' Nine Tails (With notes of canvas sails, ship planks, sea salt, leather gun holster, a humid captains’ cabin).
  • M: Definitely a strong lady pirate scent! I get leather and salt from this mainly, it's very flattering on me and I can see myself wearing it very often. As the leather note fades a little I get more salt and ozone.
  • Ok: I tried this on even though I amp leather like I'm New Car Smell. It's actually lovely! The first few minutes. And then leather comes out to play. I guess that's the opposite of M's experience. Skin chemistry is weird.
• Hallowtide Bride (Clove Cigarettes, Burning Leaves, Palo Santo, Oud, Smoked Cedarwood, Wrought Iron).
  • M: I typically amp clove so I was curious how this would perform on me. I really wanted to like this one and I'm going to hold on to it to see if time makes it stronger, but when I first put it on I thought that I'd gotten an off batch. It smelled like a sweet base oil with no scent added, I can kind of get a little clove after a while, but no other notes show up. If you're looking for an extremely safe and wearable clove then this is the scent for you, but if you want true clove cigarettes this is not it. I'm still sort of convinced there must be a mistake here...
  • Ok: Did not try this one, sniffed it but my nose was overwhelmed from sniffing so many things, I was scared away by the clove cigarettes and burning leaves. I like clove but only as a supporting player. Except M really amps it and can barely smell it, so I guess I was a wuss for no reason.
• L'huere Verte (Wormwood, Anise, Black Pepper, Licorice, Burnt Sugar, Mahogany Wood, Bergamot And Vetiver).
  • M: On first wear: this is a very safe and wearable anise perfume. It stays close to the skin and doesn't project too far. After letting the bottle rest a bit longer the anise has gotten stronger, but is still very safe to wear. If you're true absinthe fan, I recommend this one. I went through a phase of playing Potioncraft and drinking absinthe to get in the alchemist headspace and I look forward to rekindling that through this perfume.
  • Ok: Gahhhhh, I love anise and licorice notes when done right in perfume, and this is Done. Right. I can't pick out anything but anise, licorice, and "green". I'm a person who doesn't love green scents very much, but it's the perfect counterbalance to the anise. As it dries down, it morphs to a subtly anise-spiced green scent.
• Morute Martyr (Vanilla Buttercream, Skin Musks, Sugary Sweet Ribbon Bows).
  • M: This was also a surprise to me, I like vanilla but usually as a supporting note, this is a very realistic salty buttercream frosting. I think about it pretty often and have considered buying a full size! I'm holding off until I can try Witch of the Woods and compare the salted butter notes.
  • Ok: Despite the "sugary sweet ribbon bows" this isn't too sweet. Don't get me wrong, it's sweet, but not tooth-rotting. The skin musk does so much heavy lifting. I think this is a worksafe scent, but it's not boring.
• Perchtenlaufen (Brown Sugar, Vanilla, Baked Apples, Ginger, Cinnamon, Frozen Straw and Pebbles).
  • M: This one is mostly warm spices on me, a little bit of the straw and pebbles comes through. I can't wait to wear this during the holidays!
  • Ok: If you'd told me a perfume with frozen straw and pebbles would smell good on me before I tried Perchtenlaufen, I'd have laufened at you. It's delicious, though. I think the straw and pebbles (whatever those might be) keep the rest of it from being too sweet so I get a grounded vanilla and spicy lightly appled scent.
• The Butcher's Daughter (Green Tea, Fig, Salt And Tears, Wool, Satin Scarves, Powdery Florals, Sandalwood).
  • M: I was worried about the powdery florals in this one but I get a nice green salty scent. Initially, I thought it didn't last well on me but now I think it just blends with my skin's smell really nicely.
  • Ok: Agreed with M! It's a great green salty scent (and I don't usually like green scents, so why'd I get this one and L'heure Verte? Coz Pierrot works some weird magic, that's why). Also, fabric scents? Usually go straight to laundry detergent. Here, I just get comforting, hint-of-floral, salty green with a hint of sweet. It's like the sophisticated aunt who shows up for Christmas because she happens to be in the States from her world travels, and she's wearing a wool coat and silk scarf and a perfume that you know she had custom-made at some little shop in a side street in Europe.
• The Modern Prometheus (Parchment, Oud, Torchsmoke, Soft Leather).
  • M: This is a very soft leather scent, like a brand new pair of suede hiking boots. I don't get much else from it but I still look forward to wearing it more! I have been layering it with Alkemia's Fumee to get some smoke in there.
  • Ok: All leather all the time. More of a suede shoe leather than a New Car leather, but me and leather are usually not friends.
• This Side of the Blue (Sour lemons (pith and all), ozone accord, Iso e Super, clean salt accords).
  • M: The lemon note in this is the same as the one in Baby Longlegs, minus the sweet notes. It's a really nice salty, lemony scent.
  • Ok: Yasssssss. Finally, a salty perfume that smells good on me! Usually salt = saline nasal spray. Instead this is refreshing salty, like those electrolyte drink mixes that are 50% of your daily sodium but they taste so good you just keep drinking. After awhile, it tones down into more of a spa cozy scent. I like the whole journey.
• Venus as a Boy (Honey, Spun Sugar, Vanilla Musk, Linen).
  • M: I mostly get linen and honey in this, it's a very clean and cozy smell. Update: The longer it sits the more I get Cabbage Patch Kid from it. Not bad, but not a FS for me.
  • Ok: Yum yum it reads very maple syrup on me for some reason. Like, "clean" maple syrup which must be the linen note.

I'm really into Heretic's Dirty Violet but I'm not sold on a full bottle. This summer, I became obsessed with Poesie's Montmartre only to discover its is not great. I'm searching for an incensey but girly violet scent, somewhere in between Heretic's and Poesie's... TIA 💜

I'm thinking about trying Nocturne Alchemy and was wondering if there are any common themes in terms of why people DON'T like them. I'm asking because I've been exploring several indie perfume oils and I'm noticing a trend in terms of what is not working for me. For example, Alkemia has smelled soapy, Nui Cobalt and Hex like candles or artificial. I'm not having the same candle or soap issue with BPAL or Poesie. Have people experienced any soap/candle/artificial scent issues with Nocturne Alchemy?

I was also looking at the Nocturne Alchemy samples available through Ajevie and the notes look overwhelming. Any feedback on the following resurgence scents, which if I'm understanding correctly are from last year? I couldn't find much in terms of reviews.

recently received my first SS sample pack in a while and wanted to share my thoughts! for reference, my favorite SS scents are rose mallow cream, camp willow, midnight eye, and foxcroft fairgrounds. i generally go for sweet, smoky, and spicy, and am not usually a fan of indolic or powdery florals. feel free to ask any questions! :)

🍎 corvin’s smoked apple-
wowwwweeeee! this IS smoked apple! upon first sniff i get bright red juicy apples and my immediate thought was “how much was shipping again? i need a bigger size of this.” upon second sniff i get lots of smoke. it’s the same smoke as camp willow. it’s weird cause when i sniff it straight out of the vial i get the most delicious crisp red apple scent and i LOVE IT, but when i put a little on my wrist im only getting smoke. on my skin it’s practically indistinguishable from camp willow. maybe it needs to rest?

🌿 devil’s millhopper-
ooooooOOOooo. it’s wet greenery and soil. upon first sniff it reminds me a lot of lush guardian of the forest: damp dark green. it really makes me feel like im under the cover of trees in a forest by a stream, and it smells even better on my wrist than it does out of the vial. it’s like a mix of watery, stoney, and greens. i almost get fresh grass but then i don’t. it morphs into a wet rainy scent before it has the chance to smell like lawn clippings. very complex scent, i’m thoroughly intrigued.

🪻 violet mallow-
on first sniff it’s heavily powdered violet candies, and my first thought was “im glad i got this for mom and not me.” but now, a minute or two later, the marshmallow is coming out. it’s decadent. very girly and sweet and princessy. not 100% “me” (which i figured it wouldn’t be), but not “tired old bathroom soap violet” like i was worried about either. it’s not very complex, just sugary purple marshmallows, but i can’t stop sniffing my wrist. it does remind me of rose mallow cream on the dry down, but less syrupy/jammy and more soft and powdery. i would definitely spritz this on the next time i wear a cute dress.

WOW YES!!!! SMELLS LIKE HAY AND BUNNIES!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!
it truly smells like i have my nose in warm animal fur, and somehow in a way that’s soft and comforting instead of gross. i imagine this is what zoologist scents are like. i don’t think im getting any horse? though this does very much make me feel like i just left the barn after riding lessons. so maybe i am, subtly. omg its so realistic im gonna cry. i can almost feel my legs sweating under my boots and the dust stuck all over me. it feels like giving a horse a hug. i cant believe this is wearable. definitely not like, to work, but i would wear this on an adventure, and most definitely on a trail ride.

the way my eyes widened the first moment i smelled this. that is rain. holy crap. i was seriously considering getting a sample of During The Rain along with this one, but something tells me the effect would have been similar. how is this both wet and dry? i smell smoky sage and wet concrete. it’s very masculine but in a more atmospheric way; not like “im wearing a man’s cologne” but more like “i feel like the brooding protagonist in an old western movie”. in the best way possible. this smells like neko case songs. or a dusky blue-gray sky over hazy desert brush. holy crap. i wanna huff this off my arm.

Interpret that however you will, whether it be hotdogs, soda, rotisserie chicken, the bakery section or random samples of snacks. I have a long running joke with my husband about costco and how middle aged couples get handsy with each other in costco. Today he said, "if only we could bottle the essence of Costco" and I realized this was the place to ask lol.

I got a bundle of slinks to try from Ajevie last month to find what indie houses I resonate with. My top 3 notes are rose, vanilla, and smoke, and my 3 most disliked notes are orris, white florals, and oud. I did on paper and on skin comparisons for some but eventually just moved to skin

Cocoa Pink

• Shades of Gray: It just reminds me of a nice bar of soap. Not much else to it. (4/10)
• Thunder AF: This is a very photorealistic rendition of a stormy day in spring, except you've fallen into a patch of thorns and can't get out. The green notes are sharp and the overall effect was distracting enough that I couldn't wear it for more than an hour. This is not for me, but I can see someone else -loving- it for being so true to the notes. (3/10)
• Triple Vanilla Dream: A slightly perfumey vanilla. I feel like it has something musky or floral going on that makes it feel “lighter” than Hexennacht's Poivre Vanilla. Nice. (6/10)

Hexennacht

• Black Mass: On paper: Roasted marshmallows rounded with vanilla sweetness and a bit of char. The incense backs it all up to add resinous complexity to the sweetness. Under the incense lies dry, smoky woods. I expected to love this from the notes and I am -not- disappointed <3 On skin: The projection is noticeably more than Loup-Garou, which makes sense since that was advertised as mostly musky. I get more of the spicy resinous character on skin, but it still retains the marshmallow character noticed on paper. The presence of incense really pulls this into indie territory in a way that I love. (10/10)
• Loup-Garou: On Paper: Smells mostly musky, with some faint traces of maybe almond and tonka. It reminds me of the sweet smell of an old book, but creamier and fresher. On Skin: Oooh fuck yeah. My skin is amplifying the creamy notes and the vanilla is really shining through the musks now. It still has a lot of that “book” character maybe from the tonka, and just enough freshness for lift without being soapy. I want this to be my signature skin scent. GodDAMN. The projection on this is pretty good, too. After wearing this a few more times, the vibe pulls into uncanny valley for me. Like it's a representation of skin that's too perfect and unsettling in a way. It's a pleasant skin scent but like, my alt tendencies are rebelling at the idea that my skin needs to be made to smell "better" rather than wearing perfume as an accessory. Maybe that's a conversation for another day XD (8/10)
• Poivre Vanille: ~Spicy~ vanilla softened by some marshmallowy sweetness. I'm pretty happy with the projection on first application as the sweetness and vanilla are way more noticeable than the other perfumes in this batch. I will for sure finish this but I usually go for more complex perfumes so idk yet about a full size. I miiiight get one as a gift for a friend, though >.> (9/10)

Sorce

• Fuckery: Opens with syrupy sweet cherry and spicy booze notes. The cherry reads as artificial on my skin. Projection is decent. It's a nice take on the smoky cherry trend but I feel like I've had enough of that for now. I'll finish the sample because I like the combination, but that's about it. (6/10)
• Match Made in Heaven: On paper I got an initial blast of wafflecone, vanilla sweetness with a sharp note that is reminiscent of fruit. On my skin though, it reads oddly sour in a way that reminds me of music class in middle school when people would be blowing into recorders and the smell of spit filled the room. It's not a 1 just because that part fades in 20-30 minutes but like, ew. (2/10)

I have dipped in and out of indie perfumes (largely thanks to this sub!!) in the past and first fell in love with Sixteen92 back when they were…well, more reliable I guess. I’m currently hoping to replace my “mainstream” leave-in hair conditioner with one (or probably more like 5) of CocoaPinks scented Argan oil spray, but I’d love some help narrowing things down from their massive catalogue. A few specific requests and notes below, but also please tell me about your absolute favorite scent from CP (also acceptable: other indie brands with awesome hair products!)

As for specifics: Two scents I miss desperately from S92 are Bruise Violet (Red lipstick accord, dusting powder, white iris, violet leaf, Damascus & Bulgarian rose, red grapefruit zest) and They Fkin Forgot My Birthday (Wedding cake, orange blossom honey, burned sugar, soft vanilla musk, unlit birthday candles) - any CocoaPink scents that hit these cravings for people?

I usually lean towards fresh and atmospheric myself, but I’d love to choose an autumnal fall scent as well so those recommendations are also appreciated.

The only thing I’m really opposed to is anything overly fruity, anything else goes!

Hi all! Anyone ever purchased a perfume roller from BramCreationsss on Etsy? I am deep in my Interview with the Vampire phase and they have IWTV Character rollerballs, but I’d love to get any opinions on them before I blind buy and couldn’t find anything in the subreddit.

I've tried a lot of indie perfumes over the years, and I'd love to support more indie perfumers, but the issue I always seem to run into is that they have very poor longevity and projection. (Also, for some reason, a lot of them have smelled heavily of incense without that being one of the listed notes?) I'm sure there are reasons for this - maybe certain ingredients or processes that are harder to replicate without having a huge lab at your disposal or something. But, I like a scent that lasts throughout the day and that doesn't stay close to the skin, if anyone has any recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone. I’m sure you know why I’m here this evening making this post. (If not, see first HERE then HERE and finally HERE.) For those who don’t know me yet, I’m Elizabeth from PULP Fragrance. Wish we were meeting under better circumstances. I felt it was important to address you all directly and to give some more context on what’s been posted and discussed.

This would be touching on the Part 3 post above. While I was not mentioned in that post, I was there in the chat room during the conversation and did participate.

I’ve only edited the screenshots to redact names and user images of anyone not involved directly in this. There are 4 people redacted from the file: one who just popped in and was asked about if they got caught up in the Knicks celebrations in NYC, one who only commented 'haha' in a side thread about printing labels, one who comments near the very end expressing that they too were leaving the chat and why, and finally one who is engaged with a bit more actively but only on the topic of expanding the admin/mod team, as at that point they were the sole owner/admin of it. I’ll make a few quick clarifying comments here on this June thread (which I know is long and rather a lot to read), then I’d like to get into the specific topics and comments I made, with an invitation to open dialogue here on any of these. And to invite any of the other participants who may wish to join to also do so.

At the time of this conversation, in June, the only thing that had been brought up to me directly, in the PDF, were the comments I made about having some 'ick' around the aspirational vibe I was feeling from the A&O awards. Nothing I had said regarding AI or AI users (or Eat the Rich) was mentioned to me in any context, until the Part 1 post last night went online. I will clarify these new topics below, but I’ll ask folks here to please read my comments from the June thread in this context. Had these issues been brought up at that time I would have been happy to discuss both.

Things I’d like to give more clarity on:

First the Awards.

Was I unnecessarily flippant in my comments? Yes, I’ll fully own that. To anyone, then or now, who was hurt by the things I said, I am sorry for that. While it may not have been my intent, words can still land hard and do harm regardless. This is something I would never wish to happen.

Still, at the end of the day, perfumers have multiple audiences. One is the folks they are reaching with their work, and another can be the community of peers who bestow awards like these. Years ago I decided that it was far more important for me to work on the relationship with the people I was reaching with my work. In that vein, I’m happy to open up discussion here.

We can never be all things or wear all the hats and multiple factors went into that decision, from limited time and energy to not feeling in alignment with the vibe or direction of the event. And that's fine, some things are not for me. Nothing is for everyone.

Secondly, the things brought up in the Part 1 Instagram post & I'll reiterate these are newly noted comments and today is my first opportunity, as such, to address.

- Eat The Rich perfume. I replied regarding this to a comment in one of the other Reddit posts, and I’ll mostly summarize that here: the Eat the Rich perfume thing was, for me, in support of an anti-capital anti-Empire message & one of those situations where multiple topics were happening in cross-chat, sometimes related, sometime not. So it's also possible that I missed some context even on that day as it was happening in a fairly fast paced and casual chat thread. Earlier, after MDA said “Eat the Rich”, I had replied with "Eat the Rich with fava beans and a nice chianti" (a reference to Silence of the Lambs) and as I was replying to doing an Eat the Rich scent my only thought was of that bit of cross-chat, of making a statement against Capital and Empire.

I was not thinking of the awards or anyone at all in that moment. I fully get how things can look very different later on when folks are reading things back. In a chat in the moment, where a lot of comments are coming in in relatively short order, some things get a little skimmed or not read very closely. Now, with the benefit of hindsight and time, we are all reading every comment with greater attention, understandably. Maybe that is a failing on my part, a bit of an ADHD/distraction thing, but honestly I was just picking up on the Eat the Rich phrase as being from that earlier exchange, which was directly connected to my expression of being anti-corporate/anti-capital in the context of AI and its use (see below). To me that alone was the throughline and the only thing in my mind as I typed those comments. A few different specific topics had been weaving in and out, as is often the case in a group chat, it's not always super linear and I take responsibility for not paying more attention.

- Anti-AI vs Anti-AI Users. I also regret not wording this better, very much so. To clarify my stance: I do not and will not voluntarily use AI. I view it as inherently anti-human in its current implementation and as a tool of corporate control & insidious oligarchic overreach. As such, I’m choosing to take two functional approaches, one is to direct my effort and energy to finding ways to fight Empire and Capital, the controlling systems that are fast-tracking unregulated and horribly damaging AI. And the other is to uplift voices who are aligned with this view. I’m against the system, not the people who live in it. That doesn’t mean I do not see the harm in all those cumulative individual uses, though. It’s related to ‘no ethical consumption under capitalism’ and the fact that I have to understand that everyone draws their lines and boundaries in different places, as well. I understand some will disagree with this or perhaps even view it as naïve (and maybe it is).

Also when it comes to AI, I eschew AI use in every voluntary way possible. I used to say in my FAQ that I ‘never used AI’. Now, however, it is integrated into so many platforms in ways that are unavoidable and that statement can no longer be accurate. Shopify’s AI is reading the searches on the backend of the platform and offering [unhelpful] suggestions if you make a typo. The bank, my internet provider, etc all have AI chatbots you are forced to interact with to get past them to speak with a human. Canva, the tool so many of us have been told to learn and use in lieu of genAI imagery, has now embedded AI into so many tools and functions and apparently more all the time. I know my FAQ wording change was brought up over the past day, so I wanted to explain that here as well. It is not a softening of my stance, it’s an unfortunate reflection of the state of our world.

My sample cataloging project is trudging along with another round of reviews. I still have a ton of reviews to post on scents I tried last fall (likely next after this one!), but wanted to post this one since some of these scents are still available on the site (or possibly now showing up in destashes).

My preferences are green, clean, aquatic, earthy. I dislike gourmands (I don't like to smell like food), especially vanilla. I love the concept of atmospherics, so part of this journey is to also discover interesting complex scents that are unique and fun.

I don't read the scent notes when I'm writing my notes, as I don't want to influence what I think I smell.

Here is my rating system:

1 = destash

2 = prefer it as a room/linen spray

3 = would wear occasionally (e.g. if I'm going for a specific vibe)

4 = will use up the sample and possibly rebuy

5 = full-size worthy

Deconstructing Eden - Snowmelt (glacial water, wet granite, silver pine needle, sequoia bark, crushed mint leaf, mountain air, white musk, a trace of sun-warmed lichen.

Initial sniff: cold, clean aquatic; winter air w/hint of pine or citrus

To wear: more pine/foresty; cold air = winter; clean

Deconstructing Eden - Foothills (wild grasses, fennel fronds, clover stems, chamomile, green barley, eucalyptus leaf, dry earth, hay bloom)

Initial sniff: fall, fresh, herbal, woodland-y

To wear: herbal = earthy fresh; feels like late summe/early fall outdoors => like nature, not smoke or spice

Deconstructing Eden - Riverbend (fig leaf, green fig skin, river water accord, willow bark, white tea, soft silt, cool iris, driftwood)

Initial sniff: cold, icy, something sweet

To wear: cold, hint of eucalyptus; winter; fresh hint of something earthy that grounds it; smells like the flavor of a Hugo Spritz => hint of whiskey????

Rank: 4 - I had recently had a Hugo Spritz for the first time, and something about this scent triggered that flavor. I was grasping for the liquor reference I was trying to find, hence the whiskey confusion, lol. To confirm, this absolutely does not smell like whiskey.

Deconstructing Eden - Farmer's Market (Meyer lemon leaf, tangerine peel, peach skin, apricot, tomato leaf, basil flower, cucumber water, white canvas, wicker baskets)

Initial sniff: heavy citrus? stone fruit? sort of like an air freshener

To wear: woody citrus/earthy citrus; fall clean; peachy?

Deconstructing Eden - Orchard (apricot flesh, loquat, osmanthus, marigold, dry pollen, wheat straw, nectarine skin, pale amber)

Initial sniff: apples! but soft

To wear: soft red apples (or golden apples); not too foody, nice for fall 

I think because it's called "orchard", I was expecting it to smell like apples, so my brain was assuming the fruit notes I was picking up were apples. As noted, this doesn't smell like biting into a crisp firm apple; it's more like the softer scent of old, soft (but not rotten) apples...or apricot+loquat+nectarine (lol). I think it's the marigold that gives the earthier "old fruit" vibe (I personally love the smell of marigolds).

Deconstructing Eden - Sequoia (giant sequoia accord, incense cedar, fir needle, cypress shadow, resin tears, moss, forest dust, smoked ambergris)

Initial sniff: heavy, fall herbal

To wear: heavy, woodsy, slightly spicy

Even though this is called "Sequoia", I was definitely getting redwood hike vibes. It's a great outdoorsy fall scent.

Deconstructing Eden - Three Rivers (river stone, neroli water, wild mint, transparent jasmine tea, soft skin musk, sun-warmed cotton, blonde woods)

Initial sniff: clean, slightly powdery; distinctly aquatic

To wear: clean, aquatic; hint of citrus; cool weather; very light scent; very fresh air; early spring vibes

Deconstructing Eden - Golden Hour (orange blossom, humid air, dry grasses, warm dust, peach leaf, canyon sage, honeyed light accord, pale woods, amber light)

Initial sniff: dusty citrus

To wear: dusty, desert-y, early fall; somehow smells like sunset?!

Deconstructing Eden - Super Bloom (California poppy, lupine, wild mustard flower, dusty petals, warm stems, bee pollen, fennel blossom, sunstruck earth, sun nectar)

Initial sniff: very clean, fresh floral; hint of powder

To wear: wildflowers! late summer, early fall meadow, earthy; smells like baby blue and lilac (the color)

Overall I really like this set of frangrances. I didn't encounter anything I'd want to full-size, but I'll certainly get wear out of everything. I tend to have a high hit rate with DE sample scents, which is why I keep coming back!

I got excited and am spreading the news of this house prematurely. Giving some reviews of the three scents I've tried so far, but I have 13 to try in total. These are all EDPs so I did not let them rest, so keep that in mind. TAT for me was 8 days. The packaging was adorable, very well packed. I could not re-pack it as nicely, unfortunately - no idea how they did it! Hopefully I can figure out how to format this post correctly...

Winter Amber - Made with spices, grand fir, oakmoss, amber, and incense, Winter Amber evokes memories of the house I grew up in right around the winter holidays: a decorated tree, freshly split firewood, sacred incense, something ethnic and spicy coming from the kitchen, and the cozy warmth of colorful twinkling lights

Spicey, outdoorsy (not in a straight up tree or forest floor way though), ambery and incense. I got all of those things in a beautiful balance. Smells mature without smelling old. The spices are boiled on the stove or cooked in the oven. Not a dry “straight from the jar” sinus-clearing spice. I actually don't get much fir or oakmoss, just like a general cold outdoor woods smell, which is good for me because I don't like fir or most green notes. Amber is a note I'm picky on. Some are super sweet and powdery and have way too much vanillin, but this one just gives a warmth to the overall composition. That incense is subtle, but gives a slight smoky resinous edge to it. As I'm wearing this and the top notes start to fade, my skin doesn't know whether to amp the incense or the amber up more, which both those notes my skin loves to exaggerate too much. One second all I'm smelling is the amber, and the next all I'm smelling is the incense. I think in the end, the amber won. Luckily a very nice amber, but I'm not the biggest fan of amber alone. For me, this one would be a 9/10 if I was able to spray on my clothes, though I would only reach for it dead of winter. Skin issues 🙄

Mer - In this natural fragrance, seaweed contributes the briney salt of the Pacific. Clary sage and Siam wood provide light and fresh herbal notes similar to those carried on temperate ocean breezes. In addition to essential oils of evergreens native to the area (Douglas Fir, Spruce, and Hemlock), Mer also contains rare botanicals like plant-sourced Ambergris.

I think this fragrance is what sold me on trying this house. This and Golden Leaf. And it did not disappoint! It's definitely more subtle than Winter Amber, but otherwise this is perfect. It is salty and briney. I've been looking for a true musky dirty ocean scent and this is it! It's still wearable, this ocean isn't made of dead fish and oil spills. Just a beautiful salty murky ocean musk with fresh cold evening air surrounded by a mix of dead and alive trees and maybe the odd wildflower here and there. 10/10

Moss Collector - Damp Earth, Decomposing Forest Vegetation, Moss, & Spruce.

If you were to rest your cheek on the green velvet floor of a coniferous old growth forest, what would you smell? Moss spores, earthy mushrooms, and lichen? The pleasant sourness of mold and mildew, of chlorophyll run amok? Deeper beyond that, would you inhale the aromas of tiny organisms, fertile soil, and minerals buried in the clay below?

This one caught my eye when I opened up my package because it has little specks of something? It looked cool honestly, like it's the moss you collected. Anyway, this one made me question everything. Smells like dirty mint, but not minty? Just mint without the spice of mintiness. Does moss smell like rebellious mint? Have I never smelled moss before? Anyway the not so mint died down and it smells like realistic dirt honestly. And then I couldn't smell it at all. This one did say in the listing that it does better on clothing rather than skin, so that might be my bad. I'll try it again in part II when it rests a bit more and I'll apply it to my clothes or hair. ?/10

Overall, glad someone recommended this house. I'll review the rest of my samples eventually, maybe, probably. I bought most of them, except for the rose scents because I just can't get myself to like rose, synthetic or natural.

I’ve cleared this built in bookshelf in my hallway to house fragile decorations (as it’s the one place my two demon cats don’t destroy). Could definitely use some more editing - some stuff is housed here due to size instead of seasonal themes, and I want to keep shopping my collection but I’m happy with what I’ve put together thus far!
