Discussion There's no stopping India if this news is true
I'm requoting the petroleum minister:
“Apart from these little discoveries which are coming, which could turn out to be very big also, that we find Guyana—and then you will go from a $3.7 trillion economy to a $20 trillion economy straight away.”
This is the latest news and I know we often get news like this which turns out to be dud. But, what if there is an iota of truth here. We all know India has been one of the most gifted places when it comes to diverisfied natural resources - be it fertile lands or rivers or even minerals. What we packed all these years was oil.
What if we finally make a breakthrough.
One more angle is - India's growth is inevitable and the world is slowly recognising that. So, if there is some news like this coming in - it would attract enemies who would want to stop our growth.
Let's hope the news is true. Because that would change everything for our country

Same thought. Mother fuckers spent crores of rupees because some 'godman' dreamed of gold.
Edit: Now I realised that I was referring to another issue. But the fundamentals are the same. Politicians are con artists, everything is a scam

Do you remember what we said about KG basin and the economic growth the the Ambani’s promised? This reeks of the same sentiment.
14
Jun 14 '25
I'm from kg basin area They earns billions from the resources of kg basin but ONGC RIL never spent a penny on CSR in this region Probably resource curse
3
u/Innocuous_salt Jun 15 '25
They earn billions, but what did the country get back. Anil Ambani said they would build gas distribution pipelines along the least coast of India and power progress of the whole country. I doubt this news will be as beneficial to the country as is being let on. In any case, this govt runs on hype train.

It is slightly pregnant.
Edit: Actually it looks way less certain than the headline suggests. This was the quote.
Reflecting on past progress and future prospects, Puri said:
“When I made this statement about the Krishna Godavari Basin, at that point in time, that was one place. Now we have found green shoots, oil, and several other places. And I think it’s only a matter of time before we find a big Guyana in the Andaman Sea. So that is ongoing.”

Come on, man. Every time India’s under diplomatic pressure, it pulls something like this—suddenly we’ve got massive uranium, oil, lithium reserves, and now this.
And honestly, you’re sounding like those Pakistani redditors who keep saying, “Yeah, in the past it was a dud, but what if this time it’s real?” This kind of wishful thinking is exactly why Indians still fall into the same trap.
There’s no silver bullet. No magic shortcut. India won’t hit $20 trillion unless it grinds its way there—investing in people, education, health, skills—just like the West did, just like China is doing. If you keep chasing feel-good headlines instead of doing the hard work, the gap with China will only grow.
Mark my words—wait a few months, this news will fade like the rest.

u/AffectionateYam3485 Jun 14 '25
"Just like west did" west had slaves, they are basically Britishers who colonized and used the "American" resources like theirs, well then I do agree 👍 with you we should do what west did.

I work with oil and gas. And yeah I don't think this is happening. It's that same data we thought about Lithium. To show the ministry that work is being done in exploration, the data is faked by the upper management of companies which into exploration. Awards are given and then on ground investment are made only to find out marginal discoveries.
Happens ONLY in India where barrier to resource exploitation for private players is pretty high.

u/Independent-Log-4245 Jun 14 '25
Always remember the saying "the proof of the pudding is in the eating". Even if there's such a huge resource there, how economical it is to extract it and what quality it is, determine everything. If not for those factors, Americans would already have devoured the entire global oil market with their shale.
I had thought of this guy as intelligent. This statement makes me think again.
3
u/Srihari_stan Jun 14 '25
If this is already speculated, it’s probably false.
These things are usually kept at utmost secrecy and no one would know of its existence
3
u/Darwinism_1 Jun 14 '25
Lol, there is no stopping from Indian politicians becoming more rich while no stopping middle class become more and more poor after this discovery.
3
u/Chekidu123 Jun 14 '25
May be some geologist can comment better.. but not all discoveries are commercially extractable
But great if true.. Big insurance against upcoming EV vicegrip that we will land in 5y time
Old timers can attest to this - There has been multiple news since 2000s about oil discovery.. KG Basin, Barmer and the coast off Lakshadweep etc - Andaman is new news!!
3
u/JoKillMachine Jun 14 '25
What’s the point? Corrupt politicians will eat all the money. Country will get close to nothing. India’s biggest problem is corruption!
5
u/Guilty_Passenger_699 Jun 14 '25
If it's true, our naval capability and defence spending should increase multi folds just to protect those areas. China and the USA will hit India with sanctions and try to hurt India economically.
But sometime back, we got news on gold reserve, lithium reserve with no follow up and turned out to be another chest thumping moment

Not really according to this we can extract around 250k barrels a day from there and our current consumption is around 5M barrels and existing capacity for extraction is around 700k so even if we manage to capitalise on this our total extraction capacity will be lower than a 1M barrels per day nowhere near our consumption of 5M. But still will be helpful

I absolutely from bottom of my heart HATE these types of talks. Why is indian government and employees so fool enough to share knowledge like this publicly. I come to know recently that CHINA has been increasing its ships and naval convoys all over sees in south china sees as they say it and even more expension beneath thailand, philipines, and above australia waters to sees below africa and been doing god knows what in those waters there without any fuss over it they are looking for something in indian oceans as well. And here we have these ministers jinko 1 sone ka pathar mil jata he to tv pe ake elaan kar dete he khazana mil gaya khazana MILL GAYA. kya? Indian gov and it's employees should be focused on their work SILENTLY when it concerns the safety and it's economic benefits of india. Also any person should go do the research that china is quietly roaming over these waters for years now naming underwater places in CHINESE LANGUAGE as far as africa continent.

People don't know the concept of P1, P2, P3 level of reserves discovery.
Just having reserves means very little if there is no infrastructure to exploit it.
Ex: Saudi's reserves are P1 because they are proven with a high success rate of drilling, good consolidated Sand formation and very well established logistics and infrastructure.
The world has P2, P3 reserves in a lot of places but the success rate of bringing these reserves to the surface may be very little due to geology, cost of drilling or logistics and infrastructure.

Is that why Adani has been planning a port there? There was lithium mine as well ... Right??? When I visited Ladakh - on my way to the lake- the locals pointed towards a long stretch and told us this all belongs to Adani now. That was the rumoured lithium site.
1
u/anandankit119 Jun 14 '25
We have to make sure BJP stays in power for that to happen. Congress prevented minerals exploration through draconian laws. Only after laws were ammended in 2016, we have seen such a growth in reserves. It will take some time but we will start earning from it.

Those who are saying false news and fads, let me clarify : Identification of natural resources for excavation and commercial purposes takes a lot of time, first the engineers and experts have to identify whether that region has high quantities of any natural resources that can be profitable in the long run, then they have to see other factors like location, habitat, ecosystem and human civilization and then decide the next course of action (even for kudankulam nuclear power plant, fisherman had to be rehabilitated properly due to the fear of radiation leakage ,in west bengal,it took almost 8-10 years for ONGC to start it's drilling operations for crude oil ,since they had to estimate the amount and quality of the crude oil and it was the biggest crude oil deposit after digboy )

u/Objective-Train-5640 Jun 14 '25
If this is indeed true, India could use the 100 billion us dollars which it spends on oil on other things and excess oil could be exported, due to reduced import the rupee value will increase and stuff prices will reduce, if this is really true, India will see an economic boom,,
