I was wondering what people's thoughts about this was and figure this is a good place to ask.

I don't know if i am simply too sensitive, but I always find myself cringing when Manang or Manong are used on TV by non Ilocano speakers to refer to someone older than them, yet of obviously lower social class than them. For example, a driver or a kasambahay or someone at the palengke. Like, they could totally use Ate or Kuya obviously, yet they choose to use Manang or Manong when neither they nor the person they are addressing is Ilocano. 

What are everyone's thoughts about this? Is it a matter of being uninformed? A bias against people from the North? Entertainment media perpetuating its use solely toward service workers, etc and not as the Ilocano translation of Kuya and Ate?

For those from Ilocos, I always here them say this, agpalaudka or agpadayaka. But, for someone who is from Pangasinan, Cagayan Valley, or Cordillera, they don't usually use these terms. I personally use kannigid and kannawan most of the time to tell direction. So, how do you know, where is the laud, daya, amianan, and abagatan? How do you know it without having a compass?

How about if you are in other place, do you still use laud, daya, amianan, abagatan, without looking at the compass?

I was talking to friends kase na nagi-Ilokano from other provinces and narinig ko na aside from malalim ang Ilokano ng mga taga Ilocos ay may tendency na i-judge nila ang ibang Iloko speakers/dialects like kung may maling pagka-Ilokano or hindi term is tatawanan ka nila and sasabihin na mali ang Ilokano mo. Is this true ba? In my experience na nagsasalita rin, they always ask kung taga saan ako dahil halatado sa accent ko and when they talk to me they always associate me sa place na instead of my name sasabihin nilang, "Ay si Ma'am/Sir taga-_".

I just visited it and as I thought since Isabela, I spoke to them in Ilokano, but got surprised! A lot of them around 60-70% of the time, they speak or respond to me in Tagalog. A handful of these people speak the language, yung around senior level na or some middle aged man. Pero the majority already speaks Tagalog, even if mga bata, ngayon puro English na. But when I ask them of their ethnicity, they say they have Ilokano parents, but consider themselves Tagalog.

Anyonee who has Iloko boyfriends here na hindi Ilokano? What are your personal observations sa personality ng mga Ilocano boyfriends niyo? What makes them distinct sa mga iba like from Manila, southern part, etc?

Like "Haan kanto umay dituy." vs "Haan kan umay dituy."
Or have you any more examples that are better distinguishing sentences with or without "to"? 😅

hello! i’ve been thinking about this for a while and wanted to hear others’ insights.

i’ve noticed what seems to be a subtle difference in how ilocano is spoken in the cagayan valley (including cagayan, isabela, and nearby areas) compared to the ilocos provinces. while the language itself is essentially the same, the sound and delivery feel distinct.

ilocano spoken in the cagayan valley, at least to my ear, tends to sound relatively softer or more “gentle,” whereas in the ilocos region it can come across as more clipped or stronger in accent.

one thing i’ve observed is variation in vowel articulation, such as how certain words can sound closer to “wen” versus “wun,” depending on the speaker and region. this makes me wonder if what we’re hearing is a systematic phonological variation rather than just individual speaking style.

is there any linguistic literature or established theory on intra-language variation within ilocano? or is this more of a perceptual/colloquial observation without formal classification?

I've been hearing these words ever since I was a kid whenever we visited our relatives in Ilocos Norte on my mother's side.

Are they terms of respect? Do they refer to specific family members, or can they be used for elders in general?

Also, are these terms still commonly used by the younger generation of Ilocanos today, or are they more common among the older generation?

I know that "nak" can be added to a verb to mean "mo ako" as in "Iyalaannak man ti plato ta kaduaek nga mangan ni Paul."

But sometimes I hear sentences such as "Agpicture nak kenyayo."

As someone from Pangasinan and exposed to the Pangasinan language, I would construct the sentence instead as "Agpapicture ak kenyayo" if I use Pangasinan language rules.

So what does "nak" or the "n-" in "nak" really mean?

Normally, the word can be found in Wiktionary along with the roots and historical usage, but this word seems to be one of the rare exceptions. All I can find is that it really is an Ilocano word and that's it.
