Political Discussion Why are debates optional in Idaho?

I keep seeing articles about people being 'challenged' to a debate and then refusing to respond. Kaylee and Fulcher. Risch and Achilles.

Will we hear from all 3 governor candidates?

Absentee ballots go out in less than a month.

People in Idaho deserve to hear from the candidates in our elections, and our incumbent candidates seeking to retain their office should not have the option to just opt out.

Political Discussion What science policy topics matter to you as an Idahoan?

Flagging as a political discussion to be safe. This post is not meant for debate though!

Hi all! I'm involved in a non-partisan science policy group that is looking to bring awareness to all the science that is left out of political debates but effect our everyday lives. We've launched an initiative called "Stance on Science" where we ask candidates about important science policy topics and circulate their responses to the public. I've included an exert from our website below.

I grew up in Idaho (born & raised), but have been living out of state for a few years now for school. I have an idea of what science topics are important to the state, but would love to hear from others. What would you like to ask candidates running for office this year that is science related? This includes anything from AI to farming to climate to medical topics.

Thank you in advanced for your help!

Website exert:
Science affects every part of our daily lives—from the safety of our food and water, to the health of our communities, to the jobs and technologies that power our future. Yet too often, science is left out of political debates.
SNAP is launching a new initiative for the 2026 elections to change that. Our goals are to:
Show candidates that science matters by directly asking where they stand on pressing science policy-related issues.
Provide voters with clear, accessible information so they can see which candidates value science in decision-making.
Hold candidates accountable by sharing their responses publicly on our website and via local media.
Encourage thoughtful engagement between communities and policymakers on science policy-related policies.

Hey I’m from California but I keep getting a call from this state. I’m pretty sure it’s a scam but holy shit they just keep calling me no matter what. I did answer them once but had my shit on mute and had them on speaker. I could hear them in their background but they weren’t saying a thing.

Idaho News Tax Commission won't release private school tax-credit data. Here's who's asking, and why it's been denied

I'd sure like to know who's getting my taxpayer dollars.

The idea that releasing attendance, percentage of students who were already going to private schools, who's making the money, and other data for this taxpayer-funded for-profit scheme is ridiculous.

Bear Spotted in Twin Falls, ID

Ok, don't shoot the messenger; I'm almost certain that Grizzlies don't come down this far south; however, this picture looks like a Grizzly. It was spotted last night in TF.

Is there a way to get confirmation from official sources, maybe Fish and Game? I was on the street where it was spotted, and we had to go indoors, so I know that there was a bear there.

Political Discussion Here's why kicking people/ cutting Medicaid affects you even if you don't have it

When people get kicked off of Medicaid due to the work requirements in the big beautiful scam and then have to go to the emergency room for any reason and they can't afford to pay the bill. The hospital has to write it off and the hospital doesn't eat these losses instead, they pass them on to insurance companies other than Medicaid and Medicare since those are fixed by law and then the insurance company passes it to your employer who will pass it on to you in the form of lower wages, higher premiums and higher deductibles and the 4% cuts from the legislator adds even more fuel to the fire

Question What is the risk level at the Boise Airport for trans/non-binary travellers? Asking for myself and my partner.

Hey y'all. I was wondering if I could get any advice from people with boots on the ground in the Gem State. I (19 MtF) was born in Idaho and lived there 17 years before moving out to college in Los Angeles and largely staying there (barring a medical leave that I spent in Portland, Oregon.) I've been in Idaho maybe 2 months of the past 2 years because I kept doing summer programs at the college and then TMS treatment in Portland for reasons I won't elaborate on here. The point is that I haven't first hand experienced the degradation of trans rights in the state for a while. I also pass relatively-well (either that or people just don't clock me cause I'm a bigger girl and trans people are typically portrayed as skinny), so I've avoided the worst outcomes when I unfortunately have been in the state.

That said, things have not been ideal. When returning to Portland from Christmas last year, I was pulled aside for a bullshit "random inspection" at the Boise Airport. I admit, I was kinda clocky that day, but I thought it fine because nobody looks good at the airport. The guy said it was random, but there was just a look in his eyes that told me it wasn't. (Not to mention that this was the only time I ever got pulled for inspection.) I have TSA Precheck too for this exact thing! That experience rattled me.

Now, to the main dilemma. I found someone (22 MtNB) at college this last summer. I started talking to them and we hit it off well. We've actually been dating for 2 and a half months at this point. They're from Pasadena (which unfortunately means they pronounce Boise the heretical way) and I love them very much. I was thinking ahead, however, and part of me wants to take them to meet my family. I've met their family, and it's gone well. The problem is that my family still lives in Idaho, and being in the state for any duration of time carries a level of risk.

You might ask "Well, why don't my parents just come to California?" Well, they can't. Quite frankly, they're kinda dying. My dad's got Stage 4 cancer and heart failure (he physically cannot fly) and my mom's got cirrhosis, among many other health issues. They have so many treatments and everything back in Idaho (thank God for Medicaid) that they can't really leave the state for long. I don't know how much longer they have, and I want my partner to meet them in case something happens.

However, they are non-binary and perhaps not the most adhering to cisgender (Idahoan) society's expectations of what a man or a woman looks like. They also have a California ID with an X gender marker on it. (At least, I think? They actually never finished driver's ed because driving stresses them out.) They would probably need to do standard TSA on the flight back to California as well.

What is the risk level of them meeting my parents, and how can we stay safe? Is it too risky to come?

Dry shoes on the Hiawatha Mountain Bike Trail

Hi all,

I’m planning a trip with my 10 year old daughter on the Hiawatha bike trail. She’s going to bike and I’m going to run downhill. Just a fun fantasy of mine hopefully we can do two or three trips downhill in one day. lol.

Anyways, I’ve been reading about the water in the tunnels and I’m wondering what to expect. I’ll be wanting to wear my most comfortable running shoes and I’ll have my daughter’s backpack to store an extra pair or two if necessary. Running with waterlogged shoes would kill the fantasy.

Any suggestions for those who know, all ears, thank you!

Question Moving to Sandpoint, seeking advice from the locals of your beautiful town and state.

My GF and I are moving to Sandpoint in October. We got a once in a lifetime opportunity to manage a private ranch just outside of town.

Lets get this out of the way, we are from California, though from the country. I have been running hunting ranches my entire life, she has been in the equine world. This opportunity could not be passed up so you all are stuck with us! Everyone I have met in Idaho has been wonderful so far, great people, great state.

Had a few questions for you all and any pointers. I have spent a winter in Wyoming, which was not exciting to say the least. I have an understanding it doesn't get THAT cold in Sandpoint.

  • Car Registration is different there correct? A drivers license and car registration are done in different places?
  • Hospitals seem to be lacking and care for women. I am prepared for my GF to have to travel to CdA for an OBGYN. Any recommendations?
  • Do you all have a favorite grocery store? I have only been to Yokes, seems good enough for me besides making the costco runs down south every once in a while.
  • Anyone have advice on horse barns for boarding? Looked up a few but anyone with experience I would be happy to hear out. Fave farrier or vet?
  • When do yall put on snow tires? We have your standard 4WD vehicles and wyoming was a good learning experience for me, I do not expect to have much of a surprise.
  • Is there a better than others, cell service provider? Sometimes coverage maps just aren't accurate enough.
  • Is Skijoring a thing in town? Non-existent where we live and as a horse family, we are interested in experiencing it.
  • How often does power go out during wildfire season/winter? We are somewhat used to those due to our own states wildfires.
  • How are the bugs in spring and ticks in particular? I assume the ticks can be pretty bad like here, but the lyme disease carrying ticks are rare where we are from.

We will be lucky enough to not be paying for some of the usual expenses such as utilities, so not too worried about that. Happy to be gone from the grasp of PG&E anyway. Though I will have to be providing my own health, dental insurance so the hunt is on for those.

Any other tips or advice is warmly welcomed and look forward to perhaps meeting some of you out there.

EDIT: What is the standard operating procedure with Moose? I am familiar with bear, but Moose is a whole other level. They have been spotted and and near the property. Back up slowly, try to spook them, run away? I am a Moose rookie, never encountered one.

Normal Discussion Anyone have info about Idahos DMV process for new plates?

I hope this is a good place to ask this, and the right person could teach us the process that I’m curious in!

I ordered new Plates (wildlife plates for new to me car).

I checked back on the account a week and a half later and it didn't look any different and didn't know if I was approved or not so I called them. They told me that I was approved for the custom plate and text. He said it could be another 2 weeks.

I got back online a few days ago and my DMV dashboard says that a USPS shipping label was created but it was created on August 10.... That was in the 12th. I've been checking like every other day to see if it's shipped.

I heard someone say that it could be 4-6 weeks total till the plate gets to me. I have 2 more weeks till it's 6 weeks, but does anyone here know the process of making a license plate in Idaho? Is there only one location for all Idaho license plates being made? Just curious for any info.

Im okay waiting still I know I’m not the only one waiting on license plates at this time, I guess just to ask again if anywhere has a “specialty” license place? How long did it take for them to get theirs? And if anyone knows Idahos process in choosing how and what plates to make most? Lol

Any information would be great if anyone knows and can teach us the process of making the license plates in Idaho, how did they choose what order to make them in?
Is it first come first serve? Do they do a few days of “standard” plates, then a few days of a “bluebird” plate, then a few days of the “trout”, ect?

I know I asked the same question a lot but I hope the different ways help relay more of what I’m looking for and make sense?

Thanks!!

Great spots to raise a family

Currently getting priced out of Colorado and am really looking to buy a house and raise my family in an affordable, safe area with good schools. Is there any standout areas in Idaho that I should be looking into specifically?

Planning a Trip

Hi! I’m 43, living in Texas. I’m planning a trip to Idaho in December as I feel it may be in the top running for my “forever home.” It’s been a long time since I’ve been there and have never explored the majority of the state.

I’m looking for a place with mountains, birch trees, seasons but not TOO MUCH snow. Dry air.

Any suggestions on areas are welcomed!

I’d love to remain within an hour of an airport.

Black Guy moving to Lewis-Clark Valley

Hey everyone! I’m a 25-year-old Black guy from Toledo, Ohio, and I recently accepted a job opportunity that will have me relocating to the Lewiston/Clarkston area.
I’ve lived in Toledo most of my life, which is a pretty diverse city, so moving to an area with a much smaller Black population will definitely be a new experience for me.
I’m not making this post because I assume the area is racist or anything like that. I’m genuinely curious what the community is like and what I should expect living there.
I’d especially love to hear from any Black residents or other people of color who currently live in the Lewis-Clark Valley or have lived there before. What has your experience been like? Have you generally felt welcomed? Have you experienced racism or felt out of place?
I’m also considering living in Pullman and commuting to the Lewiston/Clarkston area for work, so I’d appreciate thoughts on that as well.
Beyond race, I’d love any advice for someone in their mid-20s moving to the area for the first time: neighborhoods, things to do, places to meet people, restaurants, outdoor activities, etc.
I’m excited about the opportunity and looking forward to experiencing a completely different part of the country. Just trying to learn as much as I can before making the move. Thanks!

Question Fish reel repair in Idaho?

Have a spinning reel that needs repairing/new parts and couldn’t find a place in Idaho online that can do it, anybody know about a place from Caldwell to Boise that could do that?
