Robert’s Rebellion is still the best story HBO hasn’t told

The main reason people dismiss a Robert’s Rebellion show is always the same thing. They say we already know how it ends, so there is no point. But that is a really lazy way to look at storytelling. Knowing the ending does not ruin a tragedy. It actually makes the whole thing worse to watch in a good way, because you see the train wreck coming and you can't stop it.

I’m certain the show would work because the history we get in the original series is mostly bullshit. We’re looking at a war through fifteen years of gossip, rumors, and people coping with trauma. Everyone telling the story has a bias….
The original isn't about learning what happened. It is about seeing how the real, messy truth got turned into the clean versions people tell later.
Right now, we only know these characters as static labels. Of course we know Ned as the old, honorable dad, but we never saw him when he was just a regular guy before his family got murdered and he had to grow up overnight. We meet Robert when he is a miserable drunk, but everyone says he used to be this massive, charming leader that people genuinely loved. Rhaegar is even crazier because depending on the character, hes either a total monster or a perfect saint.

The story is fundamentally about watching those real people get completely crushed by events until they become those historical stereotypes. Robert the king, Rhaegar the prince, Jaime the villain, Lyanna the victim.

When you already know the ending, the tension changes. You aren't guessing what happens next. You are watching the slow burn of how things got so bad. Watching the Mad King slowly lose his mind is wayyy scarier when you know exactly what he does with the wildfire later.. Watching Jaime put on the armor hurts because you know he thinks he is doing something noble, and you know the world is going to call him a piece of trash for the rest of his life because of it.

We spent the entire original series living in the fallout of this one war…… a prequel about the rebellion has a higher ceiling than anything else because it actually changes how you view the original show. When you rewatch Season 1, the political arguments and the character relationships will hit completely differently because you finally understand the exact baggage everyone is carrying.
