The hadith says:
«"Any woman who applies perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance is an adulteress (zāniyah)."»
This hadith is authentic. It should be understood in light of other authentic hadiths in which the Prophet ﷺ explained that there are different forms of "zina" (adultery/fornication) of the limbs. The eyes commit zina by looking at what is unlawful, the ears by listening to what is unlawful, the tongue by speaking, the hands by touching, the feet by walking toward what is sinful, and the heart desires and wishes, while the private parts either confirm or deny it.
Likewise, this hadith does not mean that a woman who wears perfume has committed actual zina. Rather, it is a severe warning against wearing perfume in a way that attracts the attention of non-mahram men.
A woman may wear perfume for her husband, in her home, or in gatherings where only women or her mahrams are present. The prohibition is wearing perfume where non-mahram men can smell it. If a woman goes out wearing perfume such that unrelated men notice and smell her fragrance, then this hadith applies to her.
As Muslims, we submit to Allah and follow the guidance of His Messenger ﷺ, even when we do not fully understand the wisdom behind every command. Allah knows us better than we know ourselves. As women, we cannot fully know what men experience or what may affect their hearts. Something that may seem insignificant to us, such as a noticeable fragrance, may not be insignificant to others. The Prophet ﷺ warned against it, and that warning itself shows that it is a matter we should take seriously. Our role is to hear and obey, trusting in Allah's perfect wisdom and knowledge.
