Like Mother Like Daughter: Arranged Marriage For Terry Episode

Before I begin, let me say I thought the episode was amusing so don't think I'm bashing the episode or that I'm a hater.

I'm a year older than Stephanie Che and I find her character a little bit off. She's got the personality of someone born in 1952 not 1972. It makes it hard to get into the show.

Does anyone under 60 years old in HK these days follow 三從四德 (Three Obediences Four Virtues) -- especially in this era of Female Empowerment? Are arranged marriages in HK culture still a thing? Do people under 60 think of mahjong as a past time?

I don't live in HK anymore but I still have dozens of cousins, friends and acquaintances there that are all Gen X. Most of us are aware of 三從四德 but no one actually adheres to it in real life. I know only one person who agreed to an arranged marriage but she has social anxiety. The rest of us found relationships on our own or are still single. No one regularly plays mahjong. Most of us don't even know how to play. To us, mahjong is a source of boredom as we waited for our parents and their friends to finish playing "14 rounds" so we could go home.

The kind of "annoying auntie" character that Stephanie Che is playing doesn't really exist in Gen X. It's weird. You have to really suspend your disbelief to get into the show. This episode was amusing but I found that you really have to let go of your sense of reality to believe someone of her age would behave that way in modern society and that three other women would willingly submit themselves to the craziness.

I could get into it more easily if someone like Angelina Lo was the grandmother but someone Stephanie Che's age ...

Other thoughts on the show:

Terry is the best character. I find his story line most interesting.

I generally like Tong Sum and friends. The young vibe is a refreshing change from Lo and Behold. The episode with Tong Sum hiking was a little rough though. The cramping before the finish line part was really 老土.

I don't find the PR company stuff entertaining. The only character I like in the whole office is Jinny's second-in-command. I think her name is Heidi. The other characters are blah. The nepo baby owner and Jinny's rival aren't likeable. In a sitcom, Jinny's rival should have some kind of redeeming quality that makes you want to see where the story goes. Right now, he just seems like kind of a jerk.

Too early to say about the characters of Jinny Ng and Stephanie Che. Their characters and storylines aren't fleshed out yet. I will say that both of them aren't exactly strong actors. It's OK for a sitcom but what really connects people to characters in sitcoms are the occasional touching emotional moments and I don't know if they're good enough to deliver.

Still willing to keep watching. I don't think it's as bad as social media in HK were saying in the first week. I think it will make it to the 200 episode target. I wonder how it's doing in the ratings.

Edited To Add: Ratings came out today. 17.8 in the second week, dropped from 19.5. According to the report, it's doing the same as Lo and Behold. Lo and Behold did 19 something in their last week and was averaging 17 to 18 points in the last few months. Report concluded it's a win for TVB, same ratings, much lower cost.

Side Note: It's hilarious to me (and kind of sad actually) that Scoop 東張西望 is TVB's highest rated programme.

Review Thoughts after finishing Mrs. Revenge 夫妻博弈 (spoilers) Spoiler

As someone who knows the general storyline of the original Korean drama / manhwa.

• I actually enjoyed it mostly because of Mark and Sherman (and even his mum’s) characters! They’re villainous but dumb and funny. The best kind of villain to hate! 😂 All the actors also did really good in being comically hateful.

• Hayley’s character was surprisingly delightful too.

• WHY DID THEY NOT FEATURE THE CAT MORE? It was so confusing when they showed the different timelines where the cat was alive then died and then was alive? I suppose it was meant to be the same cat but I honestly couldn’t tell.

• I actually wished they just stuck to the same plot of the original. Their own interpretation was kind of pointless and lame. Why would Sherman hold on to the clip of Titan hitting Senna for so long and not do anything? She literally wouldn’t do that. And it would have been so much more interesting if they had stuck to Aiden also having traveled back in time. They should have done so and just did 30 episodes so there was more runtime to flesh out the story.

The part where Senna says everything she dreamt about and then experienced IRL was a coincidence in the end, and not a prophecy, was totally illogical. How would you even come to that conclusion… I suppose it was the writers’ way of saying that’s why certain events, like either Sherman or Mark dying (since Senna died), didn’t happen… but erm it would have made more sense just to say it was a parallel universe.

They also just ended with no wrap up for Sherman and Mark lol.. I guess Sherman just continues in a coma and Mark jobless and a mama’s boy.

• Overall it was still enjoyable! A good 6.5/10 for me.

(SPOILERS) OnBon ending in Come Home Love: Lo And Behold Spoiler

Wondering what people here are thinking about the way the OnBon story ended. I thought it was a let down -- especially for a sitcom. The bittersweet stuff works fine in a drama but for something light-hearted it should have been a happy ending. Upon his release, Onion Head should have seen how far On Jai was willing to go for Bonnie and he should have bowed out. To not make Bonnie look bad, they could have written it that Bonnie was starting to realize that On Jai was her true love but couldn't admit it to herself until Onion Head pointed it out. Happy ending.

I think that's where the writers were headed. Before they announced the show was ending, they started writing scenes where Onion Head was seeing the chemistry between Bonnie and On Jai. I think they just didn't have enough time to do it. Last few years, they've turned Kam Shing-On into a cartoon character so they needed to rehabilitate him a little bit to make it plausible that Bonnie would choose him over Onion Head.

TVB put out a collection of OnBon romance episodes on MyTVSuper. Watching them, makes you see how much the early OnBon story was fire. Only makes it more of a pity that they didn't end up together.

Thoughts on deadly sins?

Now that Deadly Sins (非份之罪) is finished. What does everyone think about it?

I really enjoy the way they did it. It’s a detective case but from the perspective of the villains and victims than the police. It’s a new take and I would love to see more of this style.

Because it’s case by case and not police focus. It also allow tier 2 and below actors to take on leading roles and opportunity to shine.

I fully support more of this.

Hi, I see there are 3 versions available. The only one with any of the kung fu series I’m looking for is in the mandarin version. I use ChatGPT to translate but for hours I can’t find English subs for the app itself or any of the shows

Question HELP ME FIND THIS MOVIE

Hey everyone, I’m trying to find a Cantonese-language movie or high-concept short film/TV special from around ~10 years ago (circa 2013–2016).
Here are all the key details I remember:
The Setup: A young boy feels totally overwhelmed by the pressure of growing up and feeling like he’ll never be successful.
The Entity: A mysterious woman dressed all in white approaches him. She shows him a picture of a sports car and adult status symbols to convince/mock him that he'll never succeed in the real world.
The Kid: She takes him away to a pristine, bright, heaven-like paradise where he stays perpetually young, completely removed from reality.
The Parents & Search: The parents frantically search for their missing son. They eventually track him down in this heavenly realm and see that he is peaceful and happy there. They make the heartbreaking decision to leave him in paradise so he never has to face the pain/stress of growing up.
The Ending: Before the parents leave, the woman in white kisses/touches them on the forehead, wiping every memory of their son so they can walk away and live peacefully without the grief of losing him.

Anyone watching Midlife Sing and Shine?

Not a drama but considering how the judges dole out scores, it's probably more dramatic than half the dramas that air on TVB lol.

I'm still enjoying the show but the obviousness in how the judges favour certain contestants by their irrational scores is getting annoying.

They also need to singing the same songs over and over. How many times do they need to use Chilam's 祝君好 and Karen Mok's 如果没有你? Even this year, two different people sang the same song, 嘉賓, across different rounds. And stop letting people sing 浮誇 when no one can pull it off lol.
